The information from Secretary of State Marco Rubio looks good. During his flight to Saudi Arabia, Secretary Rubio answered a few questions about the U.S. delegation expectations of the meeting with Ukraine officials.
Rubio notes the aforementioned “minerals deal” is not an important part of the larger objective. Secretary Rubio says that finding out if Ukraine’s desire for peace with Russia is true, in good faith or not, is the key objective. A pragmatic Rubio also notes that Ukraine is likely going to have to give up lost territory to achieve peace.

“Both sides need to come to an understanding,” he said. “The Russians can’t conquer all of Ukraine, and obviously it will be very difficult for Ukraine, in any reasonable time period, to sort of force the Russians back all the way to where they were in 2014. So the only solution to this war is diplomacy and getting them to a table where that’s possible.
“Then we’ll have to determine how far they are from the Russian position, which we don’t know yet either. And then once you understand where both sides truly are, it gives you a sense of how big the divide is and how hard it’s going to be,” Rubio explained. “I’m hoping it’ll be a positive interaction along those lines.” (more)
Rubio also seems to indicate that if the U.S delegation senses this is all just lies and disinformation from the Ukraine side, then President Trump’s approach to providing financial support will moderate accordingly. “The pause in aid broadly is something I hope we can resolve,” Rubio said. “I think what happens tomorrow will be key to that.”

“The rare earths minerals deal” is, IMHO, a McGuffin. “Rare” earths aren’t actually all that rare, and many nations – including the USA – have commercially-exploitable deposits of them. The deposits which Ukraine purportedly has might or might not be in their control, and in any case the extraction operations would be taking place in a war zone. Many experts in the field are openly doubtful of its credibility.

Yes, “rare earth” is more of a chemical term than an indication of rarity. That said, Gold is actually less scarce than Rare Earth metals. So it’s not quite the McGuffin you think it is. On top of that, gold is way more easy to process and isolate than the rare earth metals.
Rare-earth deposits are mined as a byproduct of mining for iron ore! You don’t simply dig a mine for rare-earth deposits! Iron ore mines are a major investment requiring railroad access, etc.
Exactly – what is rare is the availability of U.S. based smelters and refiners to recover those metals which are side materials from gold, silver, copper, and other mineral commodities that are the major target for the mining companies.
Saw an article (forgot where so can’t link source) there is discussion of building smelters and refineries on U.S. military bases and employing vets. There are plenty of bases in the western States where most of the mining is, so that makes sense and would give the employees solid high wage jobs.
Need to check out the water needed to refine all these minerals that were mined. I read that refining rare earths in Wyoming (where they are found) would require all the water available to Wyoming leaving its people and ranching without water. Scare mongering? Who knows but it is something that needs to be considered and, if problematical, worked around.

Just saw on another site that Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire. I imagine that Rubio’s stance that U.S. “financial support will moderate accordingly” if the U.S. delegation senses that Ukraine is not being honest about wanting peace is what drove them to accept a ceasefire. They have little choice since the UK, EU, etc. don’t have the wherewithal to keep the war going on their own and they cannot afford any lessening of U.S. support. But don’t bet on the ceasefire lasting anywhere near 30 days. Someone among the war mongers will think of a way to get the war going again without threatening any current U.S. support. They will be betting on PDJT and Rubio not seeing through their scheme and I think they will lose that bet.

Yes, it will take both sides to agree. Maybe that large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on Russia on basically the same day as they agree to the ceasefire was intended to push Russia to be even more committed to say No? The administration should be very careful and slow lifting any restrictions on Ukraine. I think it is clear there is a lot of gameplaying going on.

We might see a serious realignment of the region if Romania’s revolution succeeds.
It would likely be Hungary’s best interest to abandon the EU which stripped it of its voting rights and align with an independent Romania (who would provide them sea access) and both them would probably be better served seeking trade agreements with Russia.
Once the EU starts losing members to independence movements, the whole thing will tumble like the house of cards it is.
Recall the excuse for starting the EU, was for it to be a TRADE union…
The idea being that, all together they could negotiate better trade deals with the U.S. than they could individually.
President Trump can easily “divide and conquer” them, with selective tariffs.

I am surprised and pleased with how great Secretary of State Little Marco is proving to be, but I’m also suspicious considering his past history with the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence where he had ample opportunity to blow the whistle but didn’t. I hope this change is real, but I’m not certain it is.

For a brief shining moment it seemed like @DonaldTrump was serious about the peace, then this. Who in their right mind would accept the agreement as offered by Rubio on behalf of Ukraine? Not even a hint of acknowledgement of the reality on the ground. Sheer incompetence of the US negotiating team or a deliberate act on their part to compel Russia to reject the agreement?

I’ve lost faith in the good faith of the Trump negotiating team.
A 30-day ceasefire would be a boon to Ukraine.
A chance to stabilize the frontlines.
To strip all tactical and operational advantages Russia has accrued through the blood and sacrifice of their soldiers.
And once Ukraine recovers, then to sit at a table where a rejuvenated Ukraine rejects Russia’s conditions for peace.
Trump’s team has not negotiated in good faith.
And the fact that this proposal is offered after Ukraine carries out a massive strike against Moscow?
Russia will reject this ridiculous proposal.
And hopefully escalate the violence to such a scale that the US will realize that there needs to be a realistic peace proposal agreed to in writing before any ceasefire takes hold.
One that includes the withdrawal of all Ukrainian forces from Constitutional Russia.
The Ukrainian troops can leave voluntarily.
Or die.
Trump isn’t serious about peace.
And Ukraine will reap the whirlwind as a result.
