I love Trump, but I wish he would use specifics more. Lately he’s just been saying it’s about Fentanyl. In the past, he would say “they’re ripping us off.” I think the “ripping us off” line is more compelling. Give specific examples, and tell everyone HOW we’re getting ripped off. And keep repeating it until everyone understands.
He also complainex that US banks are not allowed in Canada.

Not even close to what I said. There are a lot of stupid people out there, and you have to “sell” tariffs to them. I doubt most of them see a connection between tariffs and stopping Fentanyl. I think it is easier to justify the tariffs by saying look at the ridiculous rates they’re charging compared to us. We’re getting ripped off and not being treated fairly. I think the economic standpoint resonates more with the general public.

In his media appearances, he frequently uses the example of cars and goes through the list of various tariffs/fees that we face when exporting (compared to what they face when exporting to us). He has said repeatedly that he wants US companies to shift production out of Mexico and Canada and reshore those operations.

Canadians are still proceeding on the hope / assumption that enough Americans will feel enough pain from the tariffs that Trump will fold due to internal pressure, and that it won’t take all that long. That’s the charitable interpretation anyway. The real interpretation of Canadians’ mindset is that Canadians expect someone to talk some sense into that dumb-dumb Trump and get him to remove the stupid tariffs.
If Trump holds the line long enough, Canada will feel immense pain. Hundreds of thousands of jobs lost, businesses shuttering, deep recession, value of C$ plummeting. I think I read that the province of Quebec alone projects 160K job losses in six months. There will be some pain on the American side, but as readers here well know, America has much more capacity to absorb it and reorient themselves internally, though some sectors may have more friction doing this than others.

Conservative leader Poilievre has taken a big hit due to many of his followers originally liking and agreeing with Trump’s MAGA concept; until the 25% tariffs were threatened and now imposed and the fallacy of the huge amounts of Fentanyl crossing the U.S. border from Canada.
People are dying from fentanyl because in large part due to its high potency, the drug takers are often mentally upset enough to look for–or to need relief—in drugs. Some unsuspecting youngsters are duped of course about what they are taking. Keeping fentanyl out is a positive and well meaning idea but unless the thousands of depressed or unhappy Americans are healed from whatever compels them to ruin their lives on drugs–another drug will just takeover.
Common sense is just another biased system. Fictional Sherlock Holmes was highly educated in all or most of the sciences and other disciplines. He then used logic and deductive reasoning to find the truth based on his vast knowledge. Honest scientists utilize the scientific method to compile a theory that others can validate or destroy the theory with other evidence.
“Common” sense was certainly not what Trump’s speech proved. My suggestion is the US should promptly get its own house in order.
1. Thousands of importers’ ocean and air shipments entering the US are exempt from Customs inspection because they have joined CTPAT (Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism). CBP Commissioner Flores should order a nationwide intervention, 100% inspection on all these shipments. Containers to be fully devanned, not put thru a vacis or other equally generally ineffective inspection. Yes, get a forklift and take everything out. No tailgate inspections .
2. Stop the pointless “Stratified Compliance Examinations” which are designed to yield nothing. Assign these officers to CET (narcotics interdiction).
3. Get rid of the carrier initiative act, which protects smugglers. If an aircraft, truck, or vessel is found with concealed drugs, seize the conveyance (just like the old days).
Commissioner Flores has been around for a long time, I should not have to point out these obvious first steps.
