During the majority of my 75+ years, I have been a huge fan of Canada. It has been comforting to me having a friendly northern neighbor. I have spent time in all provinces that border on a US state.
Canada finds itself in a tough spot (as do we). The world has changed significantly since I was a schoolboy in the early 50s. My world now is unrecognizable to me. The attitudes of anger and hatred of young people today is a mystery. It appears that Canada’s society is similar to my own.

One mistake I think is that Trump should tell the American people what the tariffs are that Canada ALREADY imposes on the US. People would instantly understand that that’s unfair. Then add the fentanyl issue on top of that.

Free trades are more effective if participating countries have something to trade with each other. At this moment, Canada competes with Australia, UK declining manufacturing base meant little value. Also we might open up floodgates of Pakistani migration from UK to Australia..

Is it and other protective policies on a few other Canadian products worth scuttling so American milk, eggs etc will replace it at a much higher cost? I suspect The Trump tariffs would still continue to confiscate more of Canada’s economy. Big job sources like car manufacturing are at the top of his confiscating playbook–not milk and eggs.
Before this EO tariff imposition a steady stream of Canadians in vehicles crossed the border at Blaine, Sumas etc to buy cheaper milk. eggs, gasoline etc. so it balanced out somewhat for American producers near the border. That’s not happening anymore due to the low Canadian dollar etc
I guess it goes back to what President Trump has already said,

If Trump was actually serious about adding Canada under US control, the smart play would be to do it as a territory like PR, USVI, etc.
As for economic weapons that Canada has, there are actually a few big ones the US hasn’t mentioned in MSM, one is a large amount of your oil is received from Alberta (in fact you have dedicated refineries there to process it as its a different type from other petroleum its why the tariff for it is only 10% and not 25%). If and export tax on it was added to make it 25%, you would find gas becoming very expensive.
Also most of your potash is from us, so good luck fertilizing your crops in all those midwest GOP states for a lower price if we chose to put a large tariff or restrict its supply, im sure Brazil would buy it for all the crops they sell to China. Most of your Aluminum is from Canada as well, so that would make cars, planes, fighter jets etc more expensive.
Canada is like a smaller version of Russia as far as minerals, resources, etc. for generations they’ve sent them south for your economy to grow manufacturing products due to the 10 to 1 population difference between us. Till now the gov’t in Canada has been so keen to reset the status quo they’re measuring the response back, but we’re seeing politicians here talk about the relationship and trust being gone and will never be the same again, and while Canadians big national identity used to be that we wernt Americans, we have such a common heritage and history that we also viewed our relationship and our most treasured.
Just like countries that now de-dollarize after Biden kicking Russia our of SWIFT made them realize that the US is an potentially unreliable trading partner, you’ll see Canadians be more economically self sufficient, which will be good for Canada, but for the US, it reaped decades of robbing Canada blind buying raw materials for pennies on the dollar and selling them back to us as finished goods, the US will find raw materials more costly as Canadian supply is redirected internally or to Europe/ Asia.
Also Canada has increasing ties with China, if Canada really wanted to go full Trump mode and be purely transactional, we could let China set up shop here and be our new big brother partner instead of the US and instead of someday fighting them way off in Taiwan with ships, imagine a million or so PLA troops outside of Seattle, Detroit, Buffalo, Vermont, etc. Unlikely to happen, but if we’re no longer going to be allies, or as Trump said, have economic force put on us to become a state, well, why not, we’re gonna be occupied anyway….
While I have family on both sides of the border, and see both sides, and after 10 years of Justin wrecking Canada, I would be welcome more freedom, to do it as a state is a bad tactical idea, either control it as a territory, but to be honest, the best strategy would have been to live and let live, Canadians, while known for politeness and apathy to a certain degree, are riled up about this and coming together where we were divided before. He’s basically done, trade wise, what the japs did to the US hitting pearl harbor, initial win, but moves the battle in the opposite way you intended it to go.
Course eventually, the military could someday be an option for the US, and for sure we’d get smoked in the initial attack, if all we had was our army here, but trying to hold it and get all those juicy minerals and oil etc from us on an ongoing basis would be a nightmare, think Iraq, Afghanistan or Appalachia insurgency. Frankly, that’s the absurdity of these types of elections, like Canada and the UK. The party in power waits until they feel they have enough pro sentiment among the population, and then ‘call for’ an election, as opposed to the way the US does it. Election Day is a specific day, whether the party in power is popular or not.
Ours is October 5th. But because we have multiple parties and have minority governments, members of the not leading party can hold a vote of no confidence and if the majority of the house votes for an election, our election comes earlier. Which our Conservative party tried to do about 4 times in 2 months but never Recieved half of the votes. We also don’t vote directly for Trudeau. We vote for our equivalent of a congressman and whichever party has the most won seats is the party who’s leader wins.
We also have much different divisions of jurisdiction as you, and our provincial government has more say in certain areas than our federal government does, literally to the point that our provincial government can override our version of the constitution and the courts and feds can’t overturn it. (not-withstanding clause)
The only way around it is if the people convince their Liutenant Governer to interfere, but this hasn’t happened in over 100 years.
Each province had authority to determine covid and vaccine regulations independently of the fed government. Each province in charge of its own healthcare programs, environmental regulations, school curriculum, infrastructure, budgets…. Trudeau doesn’t have that much power over our everyday lives.

Justin Trudeau came into power 9 years ago. He won with barely 30% of the vote due to Canada’s election system. The NDP party propped him up for much of that time because they got concessions in return. Both parties are leftist leaning and ideological (like the Democrats in the US).
Unfortunately, Trump’s tariffs on Canada come at a bad time. We are headed into elections (which the Liberal/NDP coalition has been delaying as long as possible). The Conservative party (under Pierre Poilievre) is very much aligned with Trump/MAGA despite what may be reported). The tariffs have allowed the Liberals/NDP to gain support among their combined supporters (Canadian left). This is why Trudeau is not willing to actually do anything to stop the tariffs.
The ideal thing for Trump to do would be to give some Kudos to Pierre without outright supporting him. E.g. say that Pierre isn’t MAGA but seems to care about Canada first. “I can respect that”.
Elections in Canada may be called soon as the Liberal/NDP coalition has received a boost in the polls. I strongly recommend that Trump keep a close handle on what is happening and consider how he might support Pierre in an indirect way that does not make Pierre seem like a lackey.
