beginning at 23 minutes into the latest All-in-Podcast President Trump’s crypto ‘czar’ David Saks is brought into their show and they discuss the current VP’s latest speech in Germany, among other things; the whole thing is 1 hr 50 min. titled “JD Vance’s AI Speech, Techno-Optimists vs Doomers, Tariffs, AI Court Cases with Ravel Navikant” (their guest this week Ravel Navikant)
He’s known as Naval on social media and often has excellent ideas.
Regarding the AI discussion, my primary question is an eternal one.
At what cost?
These are not reasons to ban a technology, but challenges which must be addressed, some VERY near term – and in fact already should have been addressed instead of simply hurtling headlong towards the cliff.
Safety – THE issue is the same as it is with almost all new technologies – the use or misuse of the technology, be it intentional or unintentional. In the case of AI, the things that stand far above the others:
1) Its use in a massive surveillance dystopia such as that which China has embarked upon and the EU and people like Oracle’s CEO wish to embark upon.
2) The control of the people through propaganda and censorship in previously unimagined ways.
3) Its use in areas such as genetics, be it designer children, ‘super humans’, or things such as GMO crops that multiply and grow with superabundance, but which provide no real nourishment and/or lead to unforeseen health issues. There too is the entire “vaccine in crops” insanity.
4) Putting it in charge of anything. Its a tool, one that can be an exceptional productivity tool in many areas driving ever increasing innovation – but still just a tool – NOT an autonomous entity given the decision making powers that should always be reserved for humans. Some will find this point debatable – but in the cold, stark arena of honesty and reality, there is ALWAYS a point too far. Where that point is varies considerably based upon the other safety topics.
5) Use in machines given lethal force options – marginal at best in a battlefield, but an absolute NO in a policing/security application.
We’ve discussed 2 of them at considerable length here – although IMO we’ve only skimmed along the surface.

Cost – there are several that stand out above the others, one of which has multiple facets.
1) Jobs – there is absolutely zero doubt that it will cost jobs, as businesses use it to replace workers or jobs are obsoleted. Anyone who states otherwise is fooling only themselves.
Along with those lost jobs, potentially several other things are lost – human dignity and opportunity. Those are extremely important aspects of humanity.
When thinking about this aspect of things, one must keep in mind the broad range of humanity and capabilities. It’s easy to say – “hey, go learn the new job”, “take advantage of the new wave”, but not everyone can be an engineer or rocket scientist or whatever the new career fields are – and not everyone even wants to, but instead prefers other paths of service or trades or other areas working with their hands.
2) Energy – the current trajectory is overwhelming the current energy production and distribution capabilities alike and even those we are likely to have in the very near term. This has a near, mid, and far horizon component and they ALL need to be addressed NOW – not put off until its too late.
a) To address the distribution challenges and to keep from adversely affecting everything and everyone else who needs electricity – in particular the citizens of our nation, but also the other businesses – the energy sources should be dedicated and co-located with the centers. Excess energy can be sold to nearby utilities or businesses.
Note this is required not only for availability reasons but also for cost reasons – much more efficient without long distribution networks and doesn’t impose ever rising costs on the citizens funding the building of plants to service the businesses – which instead should be born by the businesses instead.
b) Near term production would be predominately LOCAL gas turbine generators – currently the most efficient, established technology and reasonably scalable and clean.
c) Mid term – utilization of existing nuclear that is being taken offline or was never completed perhaps.
d) Long term production – small nuclear and/or geothermal based plants. Both have a considerable distance still to travel along the implementation curve.
e) Longest – fusion or other, as yet to be design power sources.
2) Cooling methods and resources. The current use of millions of tons of FRESH water for data centers and what will become AI centers in fully or even partially open loop systems is a disaster in the making. Further, if the goal is to make it an uplifting technology for humanity across the globe, it is an impediment as many areas don’t have water resources available – thus it becomes self defeating. Business needs must never be put before human ones.
For a time there was a considerable amount of innovation in the ‘hobbyist’ arena, some of which was never taken to ‘production’ levels. This topic needs a concerted R&D effort driven by innovators, dreamers, and other out-of-the-box thinkers.
3) Efficiency issues – be it with H/W or S/W. The current path seems to be modeled after “The Microsoft Method” – forget about efficiency, simply throw ever increasing compute power and memory bandwidth at the problem, reinforcing bad design and bad habits – damn the broad ranging costs.
For this there is indeed an optimal point – for spending too much time and effort on efficiency is just as bad as not spending enough time and effort on it. To quote the stunning First Lady – Be Best.
Along the line of efficiency – general models that have low training thresholds would also be a fantastic idea. Put them in the hands of the people that would use them, make it possible for them to easily train them, and thus customize them to those tasks which would enable them to drive towards peak productivity. They would get better over time – and upon reaching a particular point could become products that could be used by others. This model could work several ways – one would be low cost of entry with the ability to recoup said cost by resale of a trained tool.
Another could be a system such as Linux has used – open source, collaborative, shared where the cost of entry was free with the caveat that trained tools were shared. Remember there are multiple ways for creators to recoup costs and make a living. One can sell 1 thing for a million dollars or a million things for 1 dollar or 1000 things for 1000 dollars.
Just some back of the napkin thoughts.

So, I “used” to be fluent, but no longer am (from lack of use).
When people ask me if I speak Chinese, I basically say, “No, not anymore. I used to be fluent, but my Chinese is a mess/practically non-existent now”.

Have wonderful friends who were born and raised in China and have since become American citizens.
They both have very strong Chinese accents, even when speaking English.
There children, born and raised in America, can speak Chinese with their parents at home (ages 13 & 14). To us it sounds like they are experts at the Chinese language.
But last summer, when the family got home after spending a month in China with grandparents, the kids were both bummed out big time. I asked why and they said because they were unable to hold any real conversations with anyone. Why? Because they only knew the simple things, the simple words, the same simple repetitive questions and answers they’d used back at home in the U.S.
Plus neither of the kids had a clue about how vastly different dialects would be in China.
Neither could hold a normal conversation with anyone, at all, and they had to ask their mom or dad to speak for them.
So they came home feeling pretty stupid, even though to me and what I heard, they sounded like they could speak perfect Chinese.

The lady in green in workman boots walking behind the King is Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister of the UK.
Angela left school aged 16 whilst pregnant and without any qualifications. She later trained in social care and worked for the local council as a care worker. She eventually became a trade union representative, during which time she joined the Labour Party and quickly rose to the top using her working class credentials.
None of them inspire confidence.

The EO of February 12, 2025, “One Voice for America’s Foreign Relations” is a shot across the bow of the Foreign Service, and, potentially, the U.S. military officer corps as well. Why?
Section 2 Policy says that employees not following the President’s, and, by extension, the Secretary’s orders and policies may be disciplined or fired. Section 3 defines who is impacted, which is all of the members of State’s four personnel systems. Section 4 determines procedures to be followed, and, “with respect to officials appointed by the President, preliminarily determine whether to refer such a matter for the President’s consideration.” I suspect that means the President will revoke officers’ commissions. Section 5 instructs the Secretary to totally reform the personnel processes of the Department of State.
A Foreign Service Officer [FSO] receives a single commission from date of entry on service until s/he enters the Senior Foreign Service [military rank equivalent would be 2nd Lt through Colonel]. The body of the Commission reads:
“Reposing special trust and confidence in your Integrity, Prudence, and Ability, I have nominated and, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, do appoint you a Consular Officer and a Secretary in the Diplomatic Service of the United States of America, and do authorize and empower you to have and to hold the said office, and to exercise and enjoy all the rights, privileges, and inmunities thereunto appertaining, during the pleasure of the President of the United States.” The commission is signed by the President and the Secretary of State.
When an FSO is promoted into the Senior Foreign Service [senior executive service/general rank] a commission is issued for each promotion.
“* * * , do appoint you a Career Member of he Senior Foreign Service of the United States of America, Class of [counselor/minister counselor/career minister/career ambassador], and empower you to do and perform all such matters and things as to the said office do appertain, and to hold and exercise said office, during the pleasure of the President of the United States.”
For all “political” positions, i.e., Ambassadors, Assistant Secretary and above, and other positions that a President appointed/Senate confirmed, after spelling out the responsibility conferred, the last line reads, “during the pleasure of the President of the United States ‘for the time being.’ ” Those people can be fired with a phone call.
I suspect the President wants the ability to do that with all commissioned officers.
