The readers here will not like this but President Trump might have overplayed his hand. Canadians now understand with great clarity that the United States is not a friend or ally anymore despite being one for 150 years. It may take decades if ever to repair the relationship. Canadians will now devote all their attention to finding new trade partners and reducing any vulnerabilities they have with the US–for example by building new pipelines that do not traverse the border. Canadians will detest buying anything from the United States. While some things will be hard to avoid others will not be–eg California wines. I am not sure how much this will mean for the US but no less than 35 states have Canada as their #1 export destination for what they are selling.
President Trump is wrong that the United States has everything it needs. Even today the US is 8 million barrels of oil short everyday and this deficit is only going to grow.
The US did not end the friendship. Canada did – open borders in Canada, allowing fentanyl production by criminal enterprises and allowing criminals to gain drivers licenses that are valid the US. Friends don’t treat us that way. Canada has long standing tariffs on US products; milk 240%, cars 25% HVAC equipment. It’s a long list. Spare me the tears.

I agree that lame duck Trudeau’s delaying tactics at the border were stupid and deserved push back but he and Trump despise each other. IMO, this entire “emergency trade war” was caused by this mutual acrimony .The alleged agreement today just restarts what Canadians have been demanding and Poilievre has been promising for sometime. A secure border and controlled immigration. Discussions about any legitimate unfair trade imbalances could have been done in the usual way. This win was mutual to both countries. Trump just sped up the process a few weeks to stir up Trudeau.
Many Canadians seemed to be preparing to endure hardships believing that Trudeau would provide borrowed $Billions to those that begin losing their jobs. The USA anthem was booed during an NHL and NBA game. Things were getting ugly and some of the fringe posters have mentioned U.S military intervention. A wheelchair bound black woman seemed thrilled to sing during one of the games but the crowd booed. It was a sad situation. All avoidable.
Michigan’s Congresswoman Haley Stevens (for example) was firing up her state’s Auto workers about the layoff that the Trump trade war will cause them. If this had happened and layoffs of any kind occurred she might have been right that a republican would never win a swing state again. Those auto workers were pumped up for Trump.
Anyway, a temporary truce has been called so all the best to the MAGA/MAHA movement. P Trump was far more respected and liked by Canadians than the 1st term. Not so much now. I guess Trudeau had the only win he might have been hoping for. Obama will be grateful
