South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem will appear before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee today as part of the confirmation process for her nomination to Dept of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary. This nomination hearing will likely be combative and filled with opposition.
The original hearing for Noem was postponed due to “paperwork issues.” Democrats now will advance against Noem because the DHS role is critical to border insecurity. However, with President Trump appointing Border Czar Tom Homan to the border and illegal alien crisis, Noem has a point of support but not direct action in her responses. Noem has previously held a very strong pro-immigration perspective given her deep connection to Big Ag.
The Democrats will likely shift to issues of ‘national security’ in their pointed questions. However, these are also the types of national security issues that Noem has a tendency to frame around constitutional freedoms, liberties, and restrictions against the rights of Americans. You are right about a dog that chases livestock, even in play, possibly being shot by the rancher or farmer to stop the danger to their livestock.
Possibly Noem could’ve taken her dog to the Humane Society with the caveat that the dog kills chickens. Not everyone has chickens. Maybe the dog would be put down there or adopted, but she couldn’t keep it.
But I would guess her point in writing about her dog was to highlight the unsentimental reality that many in her state, which has an unforgiving winter, and many farmers and ranchers face, when it comes to running a farming business.

We all agree that Kristi is not the kind of staunch conservative we need in our next administration, nor the right pick for this particular job. While I do not think she is an out and out RINO, I do believe she is, as someone commented earlier, MAGA lite. And that is not what we need to help drive Trump’s agenda forward.
DHS was cobbled together in 2003 as a response to the 9/11 attacks, and is a hodgepodge of 22 or so different federal agencies, and was supposed to help protect us from enemies abroad. It has never worked well and was almost immediately highjacked by those in the federal system as a tool to use against perceived domestic enemies as defined by whichever administration is in power. Additionally, it is guilty of department overreach and is badly mismanaged, both from a personnel as well as a budgetary standpoint.
IMHO, Trump has nominated an Kristi because she is an attractive, articulate and known figure in Republican circles. Tom knows what to do and reports directly to Trump. Kristi can helm the department until Trump has things running smoothly (or as smoothly as the Left/Dems/DeepState will allow him to have things running) and get rid of DHS and uncouple the various parts to run separately or delegate them to individual state control.
At that point, Kristi can be move to another position more in keeping with her abilities. Rather like Admiral Fletcher after the pivotal battles of 1942.

I’ve been watching the hearing with great interest as I really don’t know much about her, other than what I saw of her during the 2024 campaign season.
What’s clear to me in watching the hearing is her physical attractiveness is merely just another characteristic. What dominates is her command of facts, her passion for the mission to reinstate laws and standards in this country, as well as an apparent wealth of experience as the CEO of her state. She comes across as poised and serious and very articulate. Its so refreshing – especially in contrast to the incompetence and ineptitude of so many of the senators who’ve been on display during some of these hearings.

I hope she was chosen for the task of dismantling DHS. This abomination is not even just “non value added”, it in fact hobbles any effort by personnel to protect the United States.
DHS was created to get control over agencies that kept colliding with Deep State operations, and to provide employment for unemployable friends of the administration. Although there are competent people in DHS, they are kept out of key positions.
Under Obama, DHS first focused on beating down employees of its various agencies in order to develop a compliant workforce , then it was turned on the American people.

I think the only reason she was nominated was to get her out of the governor’s seat in SD, as part of a deal with Thune, whose greatest ambition apparently is to be Governor of SD. Big AG and Hospitality Industries DO NOT want Illegal Immigrants, they want workers on TRADITIONAL Work VISA’s … they want a “Guest Worker Program”. That has been their stated position for YEARS. It now comes down to numbers and moral issues involved.
There have been guest workers LEGALLY crossing and recrossing our borders for at least the past 75+ YEARS. This is NOT new nor as onerous as it sounds. The people working under these VISA’s used be called MIGRANT Workers … who either followed the jobs or went home and returned for the next work season.
There are 2-sides to this particular issue. This particular issue should not be lumped with the illegal immigrant and open border issues.

It was her dog and she deemed it not a good or useful dog and not conducive to being on her farm. So she shot it and buried it. Which in fact is her prerogative. In farming country it’s quite often the case if your dog wondered onto their property they shoot it and hang it’s carcass in the fence post for you to come get it. This is a non-issue and she shouldn’t even of brought it up. If you have a dog that’s remotely ill tempered coming onto my property it’s getting ended.
