Not a surprising appointment all things considered. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has appointed Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to replace Senator Marco Rubio, pending Rubio’s resignation from his Senate seat which will follow his confirmation.
This will provide an opportunity to position DeSantis loyalist, his Chief of Staff, James Uthmeier, as Florida Attorney General to replace Moody. This also positions congressman Byron Donalds to run for Florida Governor, supporting the MAGA coalition.
Moody will take up a pro-DeSantis position in the Senate in preparation for a head-to-head contest between Ron DeSantis and JD Vance in 2028 for the GOP presidential nomination. As senator, Ashley Moody will be unlikely to challenge any of the Trump agenda and will likely support it given the stakes for Ron. All in all, a predictable outcome.

Well, I do not think that a politcal MAGA talent such as Byron Donalds will be content to stay in the House forever. I don’t see a Florida Senate seat opening anytime soon after the Moody appointment. Donalds has not been in the chatter as in line for a big Trump Adminstration appointment. Bigger things planned for him? For someone of his talents, with much of the Florida playing field cleared out, a run for Governer — and then maybe President/VP, sooner or later — is not illogical.

Historically, Vice Presidents do not become good Presidents. Either they don’t become President or they become a bad one. Of course, there e can be exceptions. But try to think of one in the last 60 years.

This appointment is much more than a “predictable outcome.” It is a smart, brilliant, and strategic decision because Moody is beloved in Florida; she’s competent and stands a great chance of being elected to the role in 2026. I worked with them on multiple occasions twenty years ago in South Florida. The AG was Bob Butterworth a former judge and Broward Sheriff. The AG had two investigators for the entire state. Nice guys but only interested in money seizures and hitting up businesses for unlawful advertising. They were definitely not Elliott Ness and the Untouchables.
