Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede said in a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen that he’s ready to speak with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
(VIA DAILY MAIL) – Greenland’s leader, Múte Egede, has expressed his willingness to engage in negotiations with President-elect Trump – although it won’t be over American potentially gaining control of the country.
Instead, the discussions would focus on the future of the mineral-rich Arctic territory, with a clear emphasis that Greenland’s people have no interest in becoming Americans.
Speaking at a press conference in Denmark on Friday, which holds nominal sovereignty over Greenland, Egede acknowledged the strategic importance of Greenland to the U.S. and said he was open to discussing areas of mutual interest. (more)
Personally, if we are really serious about this stuff, I still think we could trade Puerto Rico to Denmark in exchange for Greenland, then just expand the U.S. Pituffik military base and call it Trumplandia. Hold a national referendum in Greenland and ask them how they feel about it. Easy peasy.

The danger for Denmark is that if they wait too long, Greenland will separate from Denmark and Denmark gets nothing. That is Trumps ace in the hole. Negotiate for a deal now or lose everything later. Up to them.
One proposal is a “Compact of Free Association” like the US has with sovereign states of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau out in the Pacific.

I am sure that Greenland and us could come to an arrangement so that Greenland can be included within the US as some sort of legal entity, ie, territory, protectorate, something with a schedule to possibly achieve ever closer union which is decided upon with referendums. This does not need to occur all at once. Baby steps can be taken with off ramp provisions.
I do not want another Meech Lake Accords and the people and land are lost forever. The Accords were created in reaction to the negotiations between USA and British Columbia. They wanted to join us since they were unhappy with existing arrangements within their Constitution. Basically, they did not have enough local power. Now, that I think about, they probably used negotiation with us to pressure Ottawa to claw power back to the BC province and away from Quebec and formalized it with a new Constitution.
This is a historic opportunity. I hope that we eventually acquire Greenland. It will be a tremendous win-win for everyone, especially the Greenlanders.
When we bought the Danish West Indies (USVI) we agreed to give up any rights Greenland (we had some historical precedent for claim by occupation of northern Greenland).
Renegotiate those terms just like Trump renegotiated NAFTA and got a better deal with USMCA, just like Trump renegotiated Arab-Israeli peace and got the Abraham accords.
If Greenland is somehow incorporated, all our lefty friends and neighbors could move there, because you know, climate change.

They purposefully try not to speak English, have disdain for US value re: Constitution, do not want to assimilate, and feel very entitled as such, they are perfect denizens of the democrat planation and will never support conservative as evidence by stringent gun laws. The residents of Greenland are not sovereign citizens, although they do have voting and elections. Denmark OWNS Greenland, and residents of Greenland, of whatever indigenous providence, are allowed to live in Greenland as long as they follow the rules. Greenlanders don’t have freedom to develop their homelands. Greenlanders don’t have a real good deal as it stands now.
I can imagine VSG Trump giving Greenlanders increased ownership rights in their natural land and sea, and in their own self-government. Let’s say Trump offers Denmark $xx cash plus ninety-nine years of 5% royalty on mineral rights. AND suppose Trump offered Greenland’s historic permanent residents (legal citizens) a forever share of a 5% royalty on minerals, plus expanded land ownership, harborage and fishing rights.
These current Greenlanders and their descendants might become very rich, or at least much better off than they are now. Their worst problem would be a horde of conmen and fancy ladies seeking to marry into the inheritance.
As for Puerto Rico – Pay off their debts, then make them a sovereign nation with no ties to the USA.

When you are negotiating, you don’t start low. It’s gone from parody to seriously discussing how America can free Greenland from Denmark, making it independent. That creates the leverage/relationship to control the minerals & oil as well as secure national security objectives – the Artic being the most important.
That said, I find it weird that everything Trump is “claiming” for the US is Kingdom 1 in the Club of Rome map of the 10 Kingdoms.

The US bought the Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917. Swap it back to them in exchange for Greenland.
Puerto Rico has some strategic military value as a presence out in the Caribbean. The Virgin Islands are nice for tourism but redundant.
