If the government “shuts down” but nobody notices, is it really a shutdown?
After a group of 38 republicans aligned with almost all democrats in the house, the effort to raise the debt ceiling and fund government failed.
Unbeknownst to most, the debt ceiling was suspended in Jun of 2023. As a result, Joe Biden and congress could spend on Ukraine without worry about the debt ceiling being a hurdle. The UniParty suspended the debt ceiling with a purpose.
Starting Jan 1st, 2025, the debt ceiling issue is scheduled to return. National debt will be whatever it was when the debt ceiling was suspended plus whatever spending Biden and the UniParty did since June of 2023. A new debt ceiling is estimated to be hit by June of 2025 or earlier.
President Trump told Speaker Mike Johnson -using the CR as a vehicle- to push the restart of the debt ceiling back for 2 years. This would allow for continuance of the tax cuts that President Trump wants to make; plus, economic drivers like no tax on tips, no tax on social security, no tax on overtime, a 15% tax bracket for companies who build, invest and manufacture in the USA. Expanding the economy is the goal.
Our government considers tax cuts as government spending. So, if congress does $4 trillion in tax cuts, the government considers that $4 trillion in additional spending.
The debt ceiling reinitiating next year will make President Trump have to figure out how to pass the tax cuts without going over the debt ceiling and triggering a default.
By not moving the non-existent debt ceiling back two more years, the 38 “true conservatives” stopped the American people from getting more of our money returned via tax cuts and they keep more money in the government.
DOGE was planned to come in under the Trump plan to reduce the size of government at the same time ultimately addressing the issue of the 38 conservatives.

Gee, I don’t have any debt, hence no debt cieling, or maybe my ceiling is -0-, cause I saw (a long time ago) debt as a trap, and vowed neither a borrower or a lender to be.
I run a lean operation myself, it’s just when the cash runs low, it’d be nice to tell my monthly bills to stuff it until I could figure out how to get the board members of the Credit Union to agree to fill my accounts with other members money so I don’t end up in the street..

Those 38 Republicans who voted no on the latest CR wouldn’t have changed the outcome if they had voted yes because 2/3 vote was needed.
But had they voted yes it would have shown a united front by Republicans and put the shutdown squarely on the Democrats.

Yes. These same “super conservative” debt hawks forced a government shutdown in President Trump’s first term, which led to a crisis at Treasury, and required the president to negotiate with democrats.
The result was more spending, which Trump didn’t want.
This is always the pattern.
The “super conservatives” refuse to budge, and so the democrats get more spending, because the debt ceiling MUST be raised to prevent an actual crisis of the selling of bonds at Treasury, which would lead to default and disaster.
The only way forward to reducing the debt, is growth.
Not cuts, growth.
And for growth, Trump wants tax cuts, and for tax cuts to pass Congress, the debt ceiling MUST be raised.
And it must be raised by 5 trillion dollars to account for Biden’s ridiculous Ukraine spending.
By stopping the raising of the debt ceiling during Biden’s administration, these “super conservatives” are forcing it to be raised during Trump’s administration, which the media will use to blame Trump wrongly for it.
The answer is what Trump is saying. Raise the debt ceiling now, properly blame Biden for it, and give Trump flexibility to enact middle class tax cuts to grow the economy.
Growth in the economy will reduce the debt level percentage.
That’s the only way out. Not cuts alone.
Think of it this way.
You have $100,000 mortgage and make $30,000 a year. You can cut out cable tv and save here and there on utilities . . . so you can pay down your mortgage faster. Or you can double your income, and now it’s much easier to pay that $100,000 mortgage.
The “super conservatives” want cuts (or pretend to want cuts – truth!), but no one else in Congress agrees with these cuts, so by holding out, the super conservatives get the same big spending bills passed by the uniparty.

Actually, enforcing anti-trust legislation against the medical industry would free up a large percentage of the budget (from Medicare and Medicaid spending). That industry alone is over 20% of the economy and needs to be cut back down below 10%. You could balance the budget with this alone.

I know government workers who love the shutdowns. They get time off from work and when they return, they get their back pay and interest on that money.

I disagree on raising the debt ceiling. My experience has shown that when the debt ceiling is raised – the UniParty pricks in DC consider that an open ended invitation to spend more money. NO!
If I could, I would strip all funding from the state department, end all funds to foreign governments (yes, even Israel – they have the means to take care of themselves now) and we should stop ALL funding to NGO’s.
If we simply STOP sending money to every bad actor in the world we would have the money to take care of Americans without raising the debt ceiling. Start there…

I worked in Dc years ago when a shutdown occurred. Lower level fed employees got back pay as soon as it was over. Keep that in mind.

The Costitution mandates that Congress pass an annual budget – they twisted the meaning of “budget” to pass continuing resolutions and Omnibus Bills. They are still working against constitutional written law. Too bad we the people cant take it before the SCOTUS.
Unfortunately, as has been explained to us over and over – we the people have NO STANDING. This is an absurdity of the highest order. If we don’t have “standing” who does?
Well first off they are well beyond their actual 17 enumerated powers in Article 1 Section 7. They have bypassed separation of powers by delegating their legislative powers to unelected bureaucrats , (and even judicial powers to the same bureaucrats. They have expanded their power through general welfare clause and commerce clause. nd finally, our founder did think of every thing and gave we the people power to bypass CONGRESS with Article V amendment process through our state legislatures. The new congress gets sworn in 1/3/25 marking the date after which the Republicans will stop finking on us behind our backs to just openly fink on us claiming they’re doing it because of their *cough* “conservative principles”.
