I hate to disappoint everyone but my 97 year old mother broke her hip last year when she was out for a walk and her walker collapsed.. It is a very painful injury. She had to have a hip replacement.
One year later and she has completely recovered. She broke her other hip about 15 years ago, at 82, and it was also replaced.
One group who probably is happy about this are her dem colleagues in DC. They are like sharks circling blood in the water and no doubt celebrating tonight.

My mom had a similar positive outcome at age 90. No hip replacement, but out of action for 6 weeks. Fell while dancing the Polka at the retirement home! Women are more prone to this due to calcium depletion caused by lack of estrogen at that age. However mom did not drink. They have to shoot old warhorses when they break a leg or hip though.
No, it is not lack of estrogen – that is an old myth that need to die. Before you kill more women with estrogen drugs. So many women used to have hysterectomies which put them into very sedentary bed rest for 6 months, and it was the inactivity that led to bone loss. Just like astronauts.

I remember this being a problem after surgery when my late mother, a very strong and athletic woman, had hip surgery in her eighties. Never really was able to converse again.
Same for my mother, she’s still alive but has never been the same and is getting progressively worse. She’s in a nursing home now, has been for a couple of years. The change in her after that surgery was stark.

It’s a very bad deal for a person who drinks a certain amount of alcohol every day when something like this happens – because 1. they don’t allow you to have ANYTHING to drink or eat before surgery and 2. there won’t be any way to get a drink after surgery
then when the DT’s start, they think you are having age-related dementia and if you are being cantankerous and trying to get out of bed to go fix yourself a drink, they have to restrain you and then JUST LIKE THAT you have pneumonia and you don’t get to have the great PT that is available now to get you moving and then it doesn’t pan out (though it IS possible nowadays to have a hip replacement and come through it in pretty good shape).
I myself do not drink (quit when I was 30 and am now 72 years old) but have sadly seen and heard of people with broken hips and other breaks getting into trouble that way. I don’t think they need to be really heavy drinkers necessarily but have accustomed themselves to a certain amount every day at a certain time and then when the body doesn’t get the alcohol, it is not good. My dear Mom enjoys a cocktail but not more than one and not every day and not on any kind of a regular basis because she doesn’t want to get herself in a pickle (she is 96 years old).

Cold turkey withdrawal from alcohol is deadly; no other drug withdrawals do that, they are difficult to withdraw from, but alcohol withdrawal has to be supervised or death can occur.
Did she bump her head as she took that “hard fall” down those marble steps? The last 3 elderly people I know who fell ended up with brain bleeds. Two died within days, one directly from the bleed. The third had a small bleed that did not put pressure on the brain, but died one day short of 30 days from his fall & a broken femur (surgical repair successful, but had advanced heart failure & PT was too much).

I remember in the 90s when I was working in Canada, the local news had a segment on their free healthcare where average wait time for hip surgery was 1 year, and there were a lot of complaints about fairness because wealthy Canadians could afford to pay for their own immediate care in the US. As my own grandmother had just had that surgery here in Texas, it really made a lasting impression on me. I couldn’t imagine her having to wait that long!

At 91 my mother broke her hip and required surgery. Her tiny 4ft 10 inch body could not handle the recovery. She died 5 weeks later. We were told there is better recovery from hip replacement than surgery to fix a break. The statistics give an elderly person 6 months.
94 year old grandmother lasted about 5 weeks after her fall. When considering the severity of the injury, I often wonder if people in that age bracket, after accepting a clear understanding of their situation, might simply will themselves to pass.
Especially one as unhealthy as her.
Given her politics, why would she celebrate a great military victory for Western civilization?
She has to be stoned to the bone on pain meds 🤪🤡

I’ve experienced a partial slip like that, was able to catch it
but it’s hard to recover from and can really do damage
I’ve been to friends’ houses where it’s hard to see down the steps at night
I encouraged them to paint a half-inch white strip along the lip of each step
… and do a test-painting to determine ahead of time if the white paint you use will have a slick finish
if so, either make sure you buy a matte paint or shake real fine sand into the paint before it dries, like with a flour sifter, to give it a little grit
there’s also adhesive-backed tape at the hardware store for that application, it’s already sanded or textured
I slipped on carpeted stairs about 10 years ago and heard an audible pop in my right knee when the left foot slipped out from under me. My right foot folded up all the way under my rear. It probably saved me from falling headlong down the stairs, but to this day I have swelling and pain in that knee.
Liz, I slipped on wet bricks and the wrong shoes in the same type of fall as you did, with my leg bent under me.
I have had a sore knee since and finally had it looked at last year with an MRI.
Apparently I tore the meniscus off at the root and that does not heal on its own.
So,yesterday I had orthoscopic surgery to repair the tear. The doctor was able to scrape off the arthritis that had settled in and repair and trim some of the meniscus.
The Doctor decided not to reattach the meniscus (involves drilling into the bone and a lengthy recovery) but he thinks it may be almost fixed, for awhile.
It is a small surgery, no real scar. If it doesn’t fix the problem eventually they will replace the knee which solves all problems.
You should get it looked at, it is a very common problem .
She’ll be the next one to fall.
If her hip is fractured and she had no other significant injuries, they will replace it and have her bearing weight with assistance the same day. She will likely be stateside in a very few days. Maybe Joe will send AF 1, or 2, to bring her back…
I don’t like her politics and think it is past time for her to retire, but I wish her well, in retirement.

If he sends a plane for her you can bet it’ll have only enough fuel for 3/4 of the trip.
