DeSantis was on an earlier list of potential defense secretary candidates that transition officials presented to the president. Trump ultimately went with Hegseth. But as Hegseth’s nomination has faltered, that list has been revived and DeSantis is again among the choices Trump is considering, the people said.

What is it, beyond writing a 200 page book, has Pete Hegseth done to make him THE guy to lead the military out of its disastrous current implosion? I agree with his opinions on the military. But his accomplishments are thin for a job like this.

I’m worried less about Hegseth “running amuck” than being effective at an unimaginably large job that needs to be done. The threats posed by our current military culture and structure and strategies is immense. This Secretary has to be up to that job from day one.
