President Joe Biden has issued an executive grant of clemency (pardon), “For those offenses against the United States which he has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 1, 2014 through December 1, 2024, including but not limited to all offenses charged or prosecuted (including any that have resulted in convictions) by Special Counsel David C. Weiss.”
WHITE HOUSE – Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted. Without aggravating factors like use in a crime, multiple purchases, or buying a weapon as a straw purchaser, people are almost never brought to trial on felony charges solely for how they filled out a gun form. Those who were late paying their taxes because of serious addictions, but paid them back subsequently with interest and penalties, are typically given non-criminal resolutions. It is clear that Hunter was treated differently.
The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election. Then, a carefully negotiated plea deal, agreed to by the Department of Justice, unraveled in the court room – with a number of my political opponents in Congress taking credit for bringing political pressure on the process. Had the plea deal held, it would have been a fair, reasonable resolution of Hunter’s cases.
No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong. There has been an effort to break Hunter – who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.
For my entire career I have followed a simple principle: just tell the American people the truth. They’ll be fair-minded. Here’s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice – and once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further. I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision. (LINK)

Something bigger seems to be afoot.
Remembering that this is the most favorable DOJ Hunter would ever face, as it is his own father’s DOJ about to convict him – the same DOJ who said that FJB was too elderly/infirm to be held accountable – something bigger was in the wind.
The vastly extensive timeframe and scope of clemency perhaps speaks to Epsteinism or Diddyistic or other yet unimagined transgressions.
Has FJB been all but given last rites?

There is of course the higher reckoning Hunter & Slow Joe (and Jill) will face. While not known to us, it will be the harshest judgment they will face. Perhaps repentance is in their hearts… not much earthly sign of that though.
The mechanics of the clemency are such that while Hunter has a large “get out of jail free card” for offenses Federal, the protection is imperfect in three possible venues where an accounting may be sought:
OverseasAt the State LevelCivil (in terms of damages)As Hunter has been seen to leave a trail of evidence, his co-conspirators may be a problem for Hunter.
These co-conspirators may take to the public information space to fill-in-the-blanks in an attempt to garnish sympathy or leverage in terms of their own accountability.
They may be more direct about harnessing the Hunter protections as a mantle for themselves, or silencing a risk in Hunter talking about them.
Most likely Hunter will cross the line anew, and face those charges.

All crimes are considered “offenses against the State”. So this pardon covers all Federal crimes between 1 Jan 2014 and the end date specified. State crimes would not be covered.
Of course, now Hunter has no 5th Amendment safe harbor when the Congress calls him in for hearings. He can talk or go to jail for contempt of Congress.

I thought presidents can only pardon people for crimes they have been convicted of. I had no idea they can go back a decade for unnamed possible crimes. He chose the year 2014 for a reason. That’s the year the State Dept/CIA took over Ukraine.
