The 10% Fentanyl impact fee will be in addition to any/all targeted tariffs against Chinese goods that are planned.

This plan will be the linchpin of a new Strategic National Manufacturing Initiative, that builds on my historic success in ending NAFTA, which was a tremendous thing, a tremendous achievement, nobody thought it could be done, and we did USMCA—US-Mexico-Canada, and it was an incredible thing. The fentanyl importation is China’s revenge for Britain’s opium wars last century. Y’all know that, right? If China stopped all trade with the US, China would come out on top, while the US would be the one who suffered most. Both would suffer, but in that zero-sum situation, China would win over the US. Because it can replace its raw material imports from non-US, non-Western suppliers. Whereas the US needs Chinese imports, such as in pharma pre-cursors, without which US pharma collapses. Same with a whole lot of components only made in China these days, thanks to the idiotic offshoring since the 90’s which the US did thanks to multiple treasonous administrations of both flavours, moronic market regulations, and greedy non-patriotic shareholders and fortune 500 execs who got rewarded based on stock price which only rose due to treasonous offshoring. While most Americans slept soundly and continued their fascination with celeb culture and sports.
These are facts. I take no pleasure in pointing them out. But the US has no leverage against China when chips are down, just like as I pointed out in a previous post, the US has no leverage against Russia. These days. Because of American somnolence.

Thousands of products made in the US that are dependent on Chinese parts and sub-assemblies will see build cost increases. With no possibility of import substitution likely on most of them due to lack of skills, materials, production facilities and tools. The multinationals did a very good job the reversing of which is likely impractical if not impossible. We here in the UK, alone in Europe, did exactly the same as you so are stuffed as well.
This could turn out to be just another decision with a sting in the tail. But the baying crowd, in their ignorance, will love it.

When I think of what my father and mother, grandparents, and greatgrandparents, endured in every war at least, from the time of the American Civil War, some of whom died in Andersonville Prison in Georgia to the end of World War II, I am not going to wine and squirm. Our medication should never have been allowed to be manufactured on foreign soil. On top of that the medication being prescribed by doctors today should have no financial incentive attached. My brother was taking medication for depression and bipolar. All of his teeth died and had to be removed. His dentist asked him if he ever took so and so and he had. The dentist said that was a side effect of the medication. Another medication he took had a side effect that required three heart stents when he was in his late 30’s. Now he needs both hips and a shoulder replaced because his bones are dying due to blood lose to those bones…also due to side effects of high doses of prednisone. Maybe MAHA will start with the loss of these medications. We need to ramp up production of our own manufacturing of medication and focus on eating healthier with less chemicals!!!
What you need to do is ditch the Rockefeller financed institutions that led to replacing natural medicines with petroleum-based pharmaceutical compounds and bring back said remedies. Don’t disagree with what you say. However, in year 1-2 of Trump’s first term, foreign cap investment went up 18-19%. Yes, we are an ill patient, but the cure is cap ex. We can get some of that… fast. Proven so.

In the end, Tariffs are a negotiation tool with aims to reduce fentanyl deaths, increased border security, and spur domestic production. I’d take any combination of two or more as a better alternative to the status quo.

What is missed in this analysis is that China has no other large markets for these products if they were to be cut off from the USA. Yes, China could source its raw materials from other places than the USA. That’s true. And in many cases they already do. But what they can’t do is find destinations for all the products they make because the USA is the largest market available to them. They can’t simply ship more to the rest of the world to make up for any loss of access to the USA’s market. So, yes, we have lost manufacturing capability over the past few decades and will have to rebuild it over years, not days, but that will start to happen as soon as the incentives change direction. We actually don’t have guess at how these tariffs will play out because we saw the dynamic during Trump’s first term in office. Also, you have to understand that China is sitting on a knife edge, trying to prevent an internal revolution. Any loss of economic growth is tremendously destabilizing for them in a way that isn’t for us. This means that China cannot simply sever economic ties either. If you’re going to do an analysis, make sure you take into account the total incentives for all the parties.
