Georgescu campaigned on an anti-EU, anti-NATO and anti-war with Russia platform; simultaneously supporting domestic farmers, domestic energy production and advocating for a Romania that is free from foreign influence.
Oh, and instead of traditional media, his campaign message was strongly directed to the Romanian people, via TikTok. Imagine that.
As noted by Politico, “Ultranationalist Călin Georgescu comes from nowhere to lead center-left PM Marcel Ciolacu and liberal Elena Lasconi in first round.

An early exit poll had suggested that Lasconi was set to qualify for the presidential runoff but Georgescu surged as vote counting continued Sunday night, heralding a result that is set to upend Romanian politics.
Georgescu, extremely religious and nationalistic, campaigned on reducing Romania’s reliance on imports, supporting farmers and increasing the domestic production of food and energy.
He has also argued that the EU and NATO do not properly represent Romanian interests and claimed Russia’s war in Ukraine, a Romanian neighbor, is manipulated by American military companies.
In 2022, he claimed that the U.S. anti-missile shield located in the southern Romanian village of Deveselu is part of a confrontation policy and not a peaceful measure. Russian President Vladimir Putin has argued the same.
He said at the time that he had no support from Russia but felt close to its culture. He described Putin as “a man who loves his country.”

I was in Romania in 1973. I was a kid still, and Romania was communist ruled. The people in Bucharest wore heavy black clothing and the beautiful, wide city streets were full of wagons pulled by oxen. There were black marketeers looking out for tourists to spend their dollars on goods and leather jackets. There were huge paintings on the side of buildings of the great leader.
We also went to Transylvannia, which is in the ski resort or mountainous area of the country. The village near the famous castle of “Count Dracula”had alleys carved out of the rock of the mountain, dusty streets and vendors selling little hand made bird whistles and hand embroidered shirts and scarfs. To my young eyes it seemed so old and ancient, from a different time.
The Soviet uion owned those eastern countries then and they had not really entered the modern era.
When the Soviet Union collapsed I suppose it all changed.

The Romanian equivalent of Secretary of Defense, when all the behind-the-scenes pressure began to push Romania into the ‘war on Russia for Blackrock and Vanguard’ movement, made a very public resignation criticizing the elected political leadership. Such principled and honorable behavior is incomprehensible to the post-Americans who rule over us. He came very close to calling them traitors, imo. Apparently in some countries nationalists have won and been able to form a government whereas in other countries where nationalists win the popular vote, they are unable to form a government because all the other parties come together to form a government without them, as has happened in France and now Austria.
But each time the pro-EU parties try to exclude the nationalists from governing, it makes the nationalist parties STRONGER and more determined than ever to resist the pro-EU parties.
The nationalists are not pro-Putin or pro-Communist per se. They are realists who see no reason to bankrupt their country for ideological reasons handed down to them like commands from the EU. They were once under the Communist yoke and have no intention of returning to that. For that very reason, they see the EU as another kind of dictatorship, one that wraps itself in robes of “democracy” but inside is totalitarian.
It’s simple math – what does Romania gain from nato? Nothing. It’s nothing but losing. Why would any eu country want to be in NATO?
If there are people who say nato is good, then they are demonstrably unethical. NATO is for killing in the hopes of usurping resources from a vulnerable country.
It’s not defense. Anyone supporting nato is part of the problem. It needs to be completely torn down. The game is over and the fools in the IC blew it. Putin just launched their version of dark eagle missiles with better technology than us.
We won’t have dark eagles ready until 2025 and Russia already is deploying their version of it. We’ve been outplayed at our own game. Brics has more money, more people and better ethics than us. We are being left behind in the dust. It’s a shame but trump and Elon are giving us a rare light at the end of the tunnel.
Elon can do anything he puts his mind to, so I think trump scored huge with that. It’s gonna be an interesting 4 years.

I have a Ukrainian friend who shared an X piece about how the Romanian people believe this person to be a Russian asset. Apparently no one in Romania had ever heard of him and he magically received the votes. I don’t know of course but it seems very strange to me to have two views of this election that are so at odds. I will have to do more research but my friend is very circumspect about what she shares – she is a thinker. Just wondering what the truth is.
