MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell just didn’t know what to do with Republican Senator from Tennessee Bill Hagerty, after he outlined all the motives and justifications for President Trump to appoint Matt Gaetz for U.S. Attorney General.
Senator Hagerty cites examples of the Main Justice targeting of President Trump from the 2016 campaign all the way through the IC manipulation of the Hunter Biden laptop story in 2020, to the continued use of Lawfare to target President Trump throughout 2024. I read the deposition involving Gaetz at a party. The girl in question said that Matt did come on board the party boat but he was the only one that didn’t hit on her, refused drugs and alcohol offered . Soon after arriving he left.

I found a nifty discussion on the C-Span website where there was a discussion about the Senate Majority Leader followed by discussion points, such as: “Explain why there was no position of Senate Majority Leader until 1913”.
My aim in sharing the above is to remind everyone that the position of Senate Majority Leader was not set out in the Constitution and it is a relatively recent development, after the invention of the telephone and the automobile. Of course, readers of “The Conservative Treehouse” are aware of this; the “Wall Street Journal” is apparently not. My contention is based on an op-ed published in today’s “Journal”, November 15, 2024: “Trump’s Recess-Appointment Scheme”.
The writer of this op-ed seems to be giving the reader a history lesson about recess appointments and how things were in the olden days when “the Founders had to travel to and from the national capital by horse” and “in the age of jumbo jets and cellphones” the original purpose of the recess appointment is – quoting our beloved Antonin Scalia, “an anachronism”.
The writer of the op-ed endeavors to tell us all about recess appointments but misses a very large part of recent history wherein the Senate Majority Leader – Mitch McConnell – during President Trump’s first administration presented an obdurate, constipated and calcified “partnership” to the new President. President Trump was met by a Republican Senate Majority Leader that worked as if the Republicans were NOT in the majority and that the President was up against Democrats determined to throw a monkey wrench into the works.
The notion of the President during his first term availing himself of the “recess appointment” option arose as a means to get his appointments made but Mitch McConnell made sure that it would not be an avenue for the President and forbade all Republican senators from helping the President in this way.
All of this was in the aftermath of Donald J. Trump getting elected to the Presidency the first time in 2016 and the enthusiasm for Trump resulting in majorities for the Republicans in the House and Senate.
Now Donald J. Trump has won a new election, sweeping back not only himself into the Presidency but Republicans into the Majority in the Senate and the House; a definite, resounding mandate so one would HOPE that at least the Republicans controlling the Senate will work with the President this time; unfortunately, that did not seem quite the tenor or the tone when Mr. Thune responded to the President in a snarling manner.
So, might one ask, Lord Thune, we citizens who gave President Trump a mandate when we helped you get the majority again: Might we be using or needing to use recess appointments this time out? The response might have put the famous Beadle in “Oliver Twist” to shame. President Trump asked, politely. The response all around was like that given to Oliver when he had the nerve to ask for more, please (more thin liquid gruel that barely kept a person going). What an outrage!
President Trump was not asking for another bowl of gruel but simply opening up the dialogue on “what’s chances” that we will be able to get our appointments confirmed in a timely manner in the customary way and if not, possibly availing the administration of the use of recess appointments – or is this whole thing going to be another tough, miserable and unnecessary slog?
Then the op-ed writer revealed what to me may be his (or her) central motivation for the entire op-ed, an animus against the apparently frightful Matt Gaetz. “It’s easier to make sense of this brainstorm [using recess appointments] now that Mr. Trump says his nominee for Attorney General is the regrettable Rep. Matt Gaetz”.
Pray tell, dear op-ed writer, what could possibly be MORE regrettable about Mr. Gaetz than has been regrettable about Merrick Garland as Attorney General, which Republican senators did join whole-heartedly in confirming for President Biden.
Are you not aware of the American citizens languishing in the laogai for having expressed their opinions, a First Amendment right?
Are you not aware of an invasive Justice Department investigating parents for complaining about school district practices?
Are you not aware of an unholy war against the Constitution expressed in the raid at Mar-A-Lago?

I recall last time around many of his appointments were labeled as “acting” administrators that served on a temporary basis because they weren’t confirmed.
