Mules were used by mailmen in the USPS to deliver letters etc. to remote areas in those hills for many years.
They are wonderful work animals and should be respected always. Still needed too in this modern age. Far too many of them are used until they can’t work anymore and then sold to the meat market slaughter houses in Canada and Mexico where they are brutally put down. Very sad end for some of these special animals.
They also make wonderful “watch dogs” protecting livestock herds. The minute I am where I can have one (or more), I intend to rescue one (or more). They are beyond special, and the thought of brutally slaughtering them after abusing them “until they can’t work any more,” breaks my heart! The fact that our planet has so many who abuse animals (often a precursor to abusing human beings), think October 7, 2023, Hamas in Israel, is unbelievably disconcerting, at best!

The 50,000-member ILA walked off the job Monday at midnight after the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), the coalition of employers at East and Gulf ports, didn’t meet its costly demands. “We’ll shut them down,” ILA president Harold Daggett declared, and that’s what the union is doing. The strike at these ports is the first since 1977 and could cost the U.S. economy as much as $4.5 billion a day according to J.P. Morgan.
Most workers would jump at the 50% pay increase that USMX has offered over six years. But the ILA is demanding a 77% pay raise to $69 an hour—which is more than West Coast longshoremen, who earn roughly $233,000 a year on average in wages and overtime, plus $99,474 in benefits.
The ILA is also demanding bigger “container royalties,” which is a union welfare program that pays longshoremen regardless of whether they work. About half of the union’s members work on any given day owing to technology that has improved port efficiency. The ILA is also demanding a wholesale ban on automation.

Today, the shipping industry is at the forefront of a second revolution. It is now possible to run a dockyard with almost no humans present. The two key jobs — operating cranes and moving containers around — can be automated. Cranes pick up the heavy containers from the ships and sort them on shore. Then trucks carry the containers from the dock to wherever they need to go next — a railroad or trucking hub or storage facility. People are needed to oversee things, but their role is now more akin to air traffic control. Maintenance and IT jobs also remain. But the bottom line is: Fewer workers are needed.

Tennessee authorities said eight migrant workers were arrested for looting a flood-ravaged area of the state in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
Washington County Sheriff Keith Sexton announced on Facebook Monday that deputies arrested eight men for looting in the flood-ravaged 107 area on Saturday.
Five of the suspects – Albin Nahun Vega-Rapalo, 24, David Bairon Rapalo-Rapalo, 37, Kevin Noe Martinez-Lopez, 25, Marvin Hernandez-Martinez, 43, Dayln Gabriel Guillen Guillen, 37 – were charged with aggravated burglary into occupied structures. Three others face burglary charges: Jesus Leodan Garcia-Peneda, 51, Josue Berardo Ortis-Valdez, 30, and Ersy Leonel Ortis-Valdez, 33.
As of Monday, all were in custody at the Washington County Detention Center, each held on a $20,000 bond, the sheriff’s office said. They were all expected to appear in court later Monday.

What matters is that people on the ground feel this way, and Trump is the only candidate to fly to Georgia with supplies and meet with emergency crews for an update on the devastation.
For these voters, the question will be: Where was Harris when we needed her? The answer is that Harris was at a California fundraiser securing cash for her campaign. Harris can only hope the media will help Americans memory-hole her lack of action. Without this safety net, the appearance of callous indifference will turn voters off.
