Iran has fired over 200 missiles into Israel in a retaliatory attack after Israeli strikes against Hezbollah and Hamas, including assassinations of top commanders. The ballistic missiles are reported to have been launched from inside Iran.
U.S. and Israeli Iron Dome counter measures were deployed along with a dozen interceptors fired from U.S. warships located in the Mediterranean. However, multiple strikes were reported within Israel. The war against Hamas has escalated significantly.
Israel has vowed to hit back against the direct attack from Iran. In a video statement, Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said the “attack will have consequences.” He added: “We have plans. We will act at the time and place of our choosing.”

It seems that the Iranian missiles were targeted at military bases leading to very few civilian deaths and injuries. From looking at the videos the Iranian estimate of 80% getting through is probably not far out. It shows that swamping air defence AD works. Also priority targets were the AD radars so rendering some systems blind.
Iran has said that this was their response under Article 51 of the UN Charter and this cycle was over. They went further to say that should Israel respond then next time Iran’s response would be much larger and nor confined to military targets.
Israel is as vulnerable as Iran in tit for tat attacks on energy infrastructure. Iran has also said that if the US joins in then the “less well defended than Israel” US bases on the Persian gulf, with 12,000 military, would be attacked.
Many of us are looking at this with horror and dread but Iran is showing by this action that its word should be respected, it does what it says it will do.
This event will have been very sobering for US/NATO planners as it demonstrates just how vulnerable we are, even if we had the coverage of the Iron Dome, the best AD in the West, which we don’t.
Russia easily destroyed the Patriot Anti-aircraft Missile Systems in Ukraine. The Russians launched dummy missiles at the systems which caused the operators to panic launch their batteries. A few minutes later the real Russian missiles came roaring in and the Patriot Anti-aircraft Systems were helpless and easily destroyed!
Even Israel knows the Patriot systems do not work. They have mothballed all their Patriot batteries.

The “iron dome” is only one layer in the Israeli AD and primarily targeted at short range ballistics normally used by the Islamic militias. We have all the tech data on the iron dome system now and are incorporating some of the tech in our own systems.
We have the Aegis system for defense against short and intermediate range ballistics. Our navy used it in taking out some of the Iranian missiles that were in range. The Israelis have a similar system being deployed as another layer in their AD but the threat of intermediate range ballistics from Iran has been minimal and the Israeli emphasis has been on deploying more iron dome systems and the munitions for them. My understanding is that there is a lot of sharing in the development of anti-missile AD systems between the US and Israel especially where the Israelis are ahead of us in development and research.
I would be very surprised if your 80% numbers are found to be even close to accurate. The last barrage only months ago saw less than 5% penetration to target although as much as 15% hit something as remnants, if only sand, after being intercepted mid-air.
Speaking of Aegis, those Destroyers onstation, USS Cole and USS Bulkeley probably do not even have the latest gen of radar designed for newer DDG’s yet. The AN/SPY-6 Radar system is a significant improvement over older tech for Flight III hulls.
Though, a slightly down-spec variant will be refit on the Flight IIA hulls.

Knowing many Persians who emigrated to the U.S. from Iran before and after the Revolution I do not believe the average Iranian has any love for the ruling regime whatsoever. To a man and woman they are sophisticated, generous and hospitable. Given how effective Israel was eliminating the leadership of Hezbollah, rather than destroy vital infrastructure I would prioritize taking out the ruling regime, the Republican Guard, and the nuclear R&D facilities.
