I am certainly no expert on North Carolina politics, but what I can tell you after watching this interview is that North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is completely incapable of dealing with the catastrophic crisis unfolding right now in WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA.
Far-east Tennessee and Western North Carolina are cut-off from the rest of the world. Not only have the main artery roads, interstates and bridges been wiped out, but also communication lines, fiber optic cables, transmission towers, cell towers, the works have been destroyed.
If you remember the communication blackout, and subsequent slow rolling information stream that took four days to surface in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina (2005), you will have reference for why it is taking the nation so long to realize what is happening in Western NC.
The video below is exactly what you do not want to see in this situation.
Last night Governor Roy Cooper delivered a shocking “exclusive interview” with WLOS News 13. What makes the interview “shocking” is not just what Cooper says, but the manner in which he says it. This guy is in a bubble without any concept of what is happening on the ground. This interview represents everything you NEVER WANT TO SEE, in a state of emergency. WATCH:
First, Governor Roy Cooper is isolated and alone. There are no state emergency officials next to him. He is not in an emergency response posture; nor is he in a coordination center with the officials that matter. 15 minutes of time during a period of extreme crisis is a lot of time to waste. This should be a press conference with every state emergency official, from every responding agency, surrounding him to offer specifics on what they are doing.
Next, listen carefully to what Governor Cooper is saying. You will hear the words “learning”, “coordinating”, “facilitating”, “attempting to understand” etc., intertwined in the responses.
Governor Cooper has no idea what to do and he is deferring response to the private sector, who are stuck inside the crisis region. The scale of the crisis is too large for the private sector to handle right now. People are trapped and literally exposed to deadly situations during these 15 minutes of nothing.
Western North Carolina is in a state of crisis. People are trapped. Entire small towns and communities are isolated by lost roads and bridges. Many people can only be reached by helicopter. Communication in the region is almost impossible. The outside world has no way to understand just how bad things are in specific areas because those areas are cut-off from all transit and communication.
Now is not the time for politics. This issue is about competency.
Now is a time for action. This is day #3, and as each day passes the desperation gets worse. Remember, the standard rule of thumb from all emergency officials is for everyone to be self-sufficient for 3 days. After those 3 days, responses and resources should be well positioned.
When day #4 comes and there is still no adequate response, you get a Katrina outcome; desperation starts to manifest in social breakdown.
The people of North Carolina are good, self-sufficient and resourceful people who will help each other and their neighbor. No, they are not Katrina dependency minded. These are bootstrapped, solid people who know how to survive. However, there are also many people in the region in less fortunate situations; older, perhaps more vulnerable, perhaps less prepared, and currently cut off from the world.
Governor Cooper needs to get there himself.
Tennessee farmland and the devastation hard working farmers must face.
Pray for the farmers. They work so hard as it is and many can't afford flood insurance and virtually none have hurricane insurance. #Helene took their livelihood. pic.twitter.com/Dfd8tj0486

Dear @elonmusk we need help in Western North Carolina. We have no power, no water, and very little communications. We are having to travel miles to get gas, food, and have cell service. All of the citizens and emergency services sure could use some Starlink service. 🙏 pic.twitter.com/u7IBo5rwbJ

Was able to talk to my husband in Asheville for the first time in over 24 hours today. He sent me this video of the River Arts District near our home. I’m so devastated. I’m so worried about the friends and colleagues who are missing. I’m so heartbroken for my city and all of WNC pic.twitter.com/1kCVvI2BP4

we are learning the hard way
how much our enemy the government is.
this is nothing compared to what they want to do.
now my resolve to resist these people until my death is going to be my calling.
I’m getting ready because if you are not prepared you are not going to make it.
you cannot ignore the reality of our situation
when it is slapping you in the face.
these people are no good at all.
This event will be used to declare a climate emergency and anyone denying climate change or other mis information will be censored or arrested or fined
Its also possible the elections will be delayed
The climate thing is driving me nuts, it is amazing how many have bought it lock, stock, and barrel. My sister sent my brother a text this weekend that he needs to quit eating burgers because of the cow farts. Then she said her son was buying an EV to do his part. He lives where there is lots and lots of snow. I laughed out loud.
Anyway, I had to stop reading the comment sections. Ashville is a democrat stronghold and they believe climate change did this to them.
It isn’t just Asheville affected by this catastrophe. Stop with the politics.
And it’s also many meteorologists with graduate degrees.
In the future, no one should be allowed to graduate with a degree in meteorology unless and until they get straight As in geology and thus are experts on Ice Ages and the sun’s influence on weather throughout the entire solar system.
Amen!
You are so right!
I agree.
They want us DEAD.
They seriously want us dead.
If you are a ham radio op, go to 7.255 and monitor. Currently that is the ECARS net, which covers eastern US.
At present theyre just taking check-ins from all over so nothing specific about western NC, but at least they are aware of problems. Ive asked that net control to try to open any comms on that freq to western NC if he hears anyone. This net will end about 1:30 pm EST, but that will be a good freq throughout day (in theory).
I listened last night for NC ARES net and heard nothing. Guessing they werent really prepared maybe.
Anyway, radio may be a bit of help if there are any ops up there who are setup for emergency comms. Some are bound to be, just a matter of crossing paths.
In evening try 3938. Any hams know what all this means and what to do.
73.
With zero power how many ham radios have battery backup and even if they could transmit, the repeaters are likely not functioning. It would seem that area of devastation would be best served by Natl Guard and even US military comms units but I’m not seeing anyting like that even talked about much less being staged.
Both Maryland and Connecticut are sending National Guard units to North Carolina.
400 of North Carolina’s National Guard are in the mountains conducting rescue missions. Much of the NC guard was deployed overseas, I forget which country they’re in.
Here’s a link to stay updated with further developments of the National Guard

Those pictures and videos are devastating. Where is FEMA? They should have been on the move after day one. These poor people need help desperately. Where are Kamala and Joe? Why are the silent about this hurricane and the damage the flooding caused? Disgusting people. All of them in DC.
Agreed. Maybe PDJT could take the lead. Not sure how but if he did it would force Biden/KH to do something constructive.
PDJT and Elon. Then, game over.
After Matthew hit in 2016, Trump sent and his family delivered to poor areas of SENC tractor trailers of food, water, baby supplies, cleaning supplies, and hope. Hillary was less than 50 miles away and never even acknowledged that people were flooded out, some withou access to water (other than swamp water) and most were without power. This was a predominantly Democrat county at the time. That vote turned with less than a month until election day.
I realize that President Trump cannot help every community negatively impacted by disasters. Biden/Harris is quick to talk about climate change as though hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes started after Al Gore wrote his Inconvenient Truth. It also served as a reminder that the really wealthy could buy carbon credits and continue to consume unnatural quantities of fossil fuels without consequence. With her track record, Harris may visit the people of East Tennessee and West North Carolina in time for the 2028 elections (assuming we are still a Constitutional Republic and can actually have elections then).
Pray for these people, especially farming families. I’m sure the Oprahs of the world will swoop in after the muck and mud has cleared and “generously” offer to buy the farms and larger land tracts for pennies on the dollar. That is what happened in Maui. Or they may simply treat them as though they don’t even exist. That’s what happened in East Palestine Ohio. Don’t let the fact that Trump shamed Biden into a quick stopover on his way to a fundraiser on the Left Coast make you think he cared! Harris doesn’t even know where East Palestine is nor does she care at all!
The people who have been negatively impacted by Helene, from Florida, through Georgie, through the Carolinas, through Tennessee and into Kentucky and West Virginia deservie help from FEMA. After all, the government has had no problem taking their tax money. I would urge that the government do the right thing but simply because it is the right thing to do, this crowd would designate it as some kind of insurrection!
There’s a HUGE difference between what sitting President Trump and candidate President Trump can do. I’d say right now he has his hands full.
Lara Trump is from North Carolina. She and Eric named their daughter Carolina.
Remember when DJT showed up at East Palestine after the devastating train derailment with water and funds? It still took Crooked Joe a year to get there for his photo op. These evil people don’t care about us. When will the rest of the sleeping sheep realize that?
Not to worry, Pete Buttgiggles will be on the scene, just as soon as he touches up his mascara.
has he returned from family leave yet?
FEMA doesn’t respond arbitrarily, the governor must request their assistance. Reference Katrina when Nagin et al refused to ask for federal assistance and wound up under water, figuratively and literally.
Government bullshit.
There should have been national guard helicopters in those pictures searching for stranded people.
Honestly, I think they will be better off without FEMA. Get Samaritan Purse.
SamPurse’s teams will be rolling soon – just as soon as they figure out how to get folks out of their HQ ,which is in Boone.
Exactly, and look what kind of guvner we’ve got here.
New Orleans also blew the money (millions) for dam reinforcements in the years leading up to Katrina. So in fact the evil leadership was directly responsible for the extent of the Katrina disaster. That doesn’t apply here, but we’ve got an even bigger disaster of criminally incompetent leadership.
No responders of any type since Friday AM. Local police have also lost communication.
Update: 8AM -City water (I have a well) has been now shut OFF since flooding has caused city water supply problems. Still no sign of crews. ONE helicopter has flown over area. (I am from S.Florida Andrew experience in Gables by the Sea). Andrew by the second day had Helicopters and 7 days after that the National Guard was able to get into the area). This is looking like a longer event than Andrew. Power crews will not be able to set poles and string wire until roads and power easements are cleared of Large trees. Those of you preping for Sh-it HF event. One ounce of gold is $2600 which is enough for 4 Generators. My extra generators I gave to neighbors but people would pay anything for 1 generator right now. People in town will be ballistic tomorrow without water. Toilet flush water has got them talking today. I can’t wait to see tomorrow. I think my Well may be in demand.
What on earth???
Am I misunderstanding, or do your neighbors in town not understand that they can use water from creeks or ditches to bucket flush their toilets?
Run the water through old shirts or kitchen towels first to filter out heavy dirt and debris then flush to their heart’s content.
Politics and optics.
This is simply more evidence of rampant incompetence in leadership positions.
Like a skier “out over his skis” or a pilot “behind the aircraft”, these “post turtles” are in way over their heads.
This is what happens when people try to play liars poker with a God who cannot lie.
HE will call your bluff.
Trust God. Fear not.
I’m convinced its less incompetence and more of “dont give a shit” !!
FEMA is too busy helping the Democrat migrants across the border and into conservative states to eat away at their tax money!
Ashville is Democrat, it is the Austin of the mountains. You would think they would be there in droves.
And NOT ONE WORD about that from local news media here in the Capital city area.
MASSIVE FAILURES in leadership, massive INDIFFERENCE, a TOTAL VOID of heart, soul and basic humanity.
Yes I’m PO’d beyond description. NC is MY state, my home from birth. News media here are so quick to point out the various cutsies, photo ops and other upchuck-worthy moments of these disgustingly child-brained pols. Thoroughly clueless on every real issue.
Some of the best coverage of the situation on the ground is on Youtube, uploaded by drone pilots.
The news stations in my neck of NC have reporters go out and stand in a puddle for a minute or two during each newscast.
NC Governor Cooper … Democrat (no clue and likely no plan) … it is interesting to note that I looked at the NC National Guard Home Page and there are mobile Teams from the NC Guard attempting to reach people in the impacted area.
US FEMA Director …. Democrat and ex-NY City COVID Response Director under mayor Mayor Deblasio (Not even a peep in the media with her speaking on plans or even visits). Compare the silence of the current Joe-Obama Administration with Obama Adminstrations response to the blizzard in NJ, 2012.
Time for President Trump to repeat his 2016 visit to Louisiana, when he shamed Hillary and Barrack Obama to vising after a Hurricane ravaged Louisiana.
By the way where is the Governor of TENN.
Pretty much EVERY major dimokrat fed appointee is a diversity hire, just as or even more incompetent than Cooper. So there is no expecting any sensible action at all from them.
This is true. But the reasons for inaction are more than incompetence.
Our government is at war with us.
Correct, I have never heard any one in NC call Roy Cooooper incompetent.
.
Vindictive yes.

While I don’t like the governor of TN, Bill Lee, very much, he did an oustanding job and had a disaster declaration signed by the President very quickly. He mobilized all resources very quickly. I give credit more to the people and agencies in Tennessee more than the governor, but he still stood up and got moving fast.
There was also press conference last night from Tri Cities with Lee, Marsha Blackburn, a Duke energy exec., and I believe a TVA representative giving updates on the dams. Not a big fan of Lee either but he has mobilized resources.
Taking care of his business…

This governor puts me to sleep with slow tone of his voice and lack of urgency.
What kind of outfit does he have on? Is he trying out for a role in the next Star Trek movie?
Is this thin-lipped SOB being paid off or threatened not to act accordingly?
I have relatives in the Asheville area, and can’t get through to them via phone or text message.
They live right in the center of this disaster. Old Leicester Highway, to be exact.
Feeling very helpless and worried right now over 1000 miles away from them.
My ex sis in law lost her house, the government is not helping at all, think e Palestine Ohio
What kind of outfit? He must have taken off his AntiFA clothes and his BLM scarf. He is good at kneeling at BLM protest marches while he has his state locked down. His “cabinet” is a failure much like the idiot at the top!
NC Governor Cooper … Democrat (no clue and likely no plan) … it is interesting to note that I looked at the NC National Guard Home Page and there are mobile Teams from the NC Guard attempting to reach people in the impacted area.

The other note is the lack of serious MSM interest in the disaster … except for; a few reports and the RINO’s as well as other Green Weenies screeching climate change.
USG AWOL except for taking your freedoms.
I’ve barely even heard about this. Unbelievable. All hands on deck needed in this region.
It’s in an area that mostly votes Red, except for Asheville.
I only know about it because we have 2 houses in NC and NE FL. I follow several FB groups in the areas and tracked the pre storm activities. The “equine” groups were trying desparately to get their horses to safe areas and were in communication with GA/SC/NC/TN residents. I texted one of my friends who lives SW of Ashville and she responded yesterday morning, she said they were lucky. The area is a mess.
The government response to this horrific disaster mirrors what they have done on our border and inflation. Ignore it, and say we have no problem. Or use this to promote the climate change scam.
The opposite should be happening in a sane world. Our military would be kept here. They would be protecting our border. They would help in disasters such as this deploying resources from our bases to help with evacuations and temporary structures and bridges. Red Horse and Seabees would be deployed. Resources would have been mobilized well in advance, awaiting such a circumstance. Our government should be working for us, with us, not against us. And ignoring an issue is against us. Gaslighting is against us. The silence from Washington and the MSM speaks volumes.
There are many who know these things and are prepared to take care of themselves. But this is life altering.
At least Ukraine can get their “fair share” of our tax dollars and keep their border defended.
Can’t you tell he really means business?
He’s wearing his neatly pressed NC Emergency Management shirt.
Probably brand-spanking-new, not just freshly pressed.
Al Francis made the last posting in yesterday’s thread about this tragic massive disaster. This is very alarming!

Eastern TN and Western NC Hit Hard by Flooding, I-40 and I-26 Closed Due to Catastrophic Collapse – The Last Refuge
https://theconservativetreehouse.com/blog/2024/09/28/eastern-tn-and-western-nc-hit-hard-by-flooding-i-40-and-i-26-closed-due-to-catastrophic-collapse/#comments

“In their great wisdom, Duke Power reportedly moved 90% of their repair resources from SC & NC to Florida before the storm hit. Now 1.3 million in Florida are without power, but over 1.5 million in SC & NC are dark! We’re getting lots of feel goods from Duke, but no action so far here in rural Spartanburg county.”
Can you even begin to imagine what this means in terms of NON-Recovery????
The power companies will call for mutual assistance and the linemen and their trucks will show up rather quickly as soon as they are able to gain access to the impacted area.
Last year, we had linemen from West Virginia working in my neighborhood after a windstorm that took out hundreds of electric poles and walloped the transmission lines at the generator in Louisiana. I live in NE Texas and outside of ERCOT. A quarter of a million of us just on the Texas side of the state line were without power for about 3 days or more yet relatively few people outside of our area knew anything about it. I think a similar number on the Louisiana side lost power too.
When the linemen deploy, they can be impressive.
Linemen impressive. As that Sundance picture of multiple trucks like a choreographed dance attests.
By the way, I am at church with these comments, but I’m with the kids in the kids room. Rather active.
The linemen and their supporters are fantastic. Dedicated to connecting customers back to power. Their elite bosses are scumbags. They only care about their latest stock deal and bonuses. Almost all of them began their careers with Duke as some kind of executive VP. They have no clue what the linemen face on the job. The shareholders should demand that they join forces with the linemen for at least 2 days in EVERY EMERGENCY. Maybe contact with the “little people” would bring out the humanity in them, if it even exists!
I’m reminded that several years ago after a disaster in Florida (can’t remember which one ATM), those folks in NC sent about half of that out-of-state aid, including National Guard.
Those infrastrucures down here have often supported each other massively in many ways. Most often it’s the feds and governor-directed leadership that fail massively.
I said NOTHING negative about the linemen.
The utilities in NC sent all their linemen to Florida.
But weather reports stated that Helene remnants would STALL over Appalachia.
STALL FOR THREE DAYS
Why would they send all their linemen out of state when this violent hurricane was approaching and due to stall over there area,?
Allegedly a local policeman said towns are gone, neighborhoods destroyed and there were so many bodies they had to leave them behind.
Meantime . … All the linemen were dispatched to Florida.
Thankfully Governor Desantis announced he is sending aid and assistance to North Carolina
They are the guys with dirty fingernails. Thank God for them!
40 will likely be closed for 8-10 YEARS. 26 maybe not quite as long.
As for Duke Energy, you don’t hear about any of their resources coming from Ohio (where their installed “CEO” lives). She doesn’t care anything for the Carolinas. There are people in NC who tried solar panels but Duke has priority on stealing from the batteries if they “need” the power. Just think about the people who invested in pricey solar panels and are connected to Duke when the Biden/Harris people’s mandate for EVs causes the electric grid to crash. Those misguided people will be providing electricity for the greedy BCEO of Duke on their own dime!
BTW, “wisdom” and Duke Power are generally not mentioned in the same sentence for the obvious reason!
Thank you for sharing this.
I cannot believe the amount of incompetence that has risen to positions of power and influence in this country during my lifetime.
It is totally illogical to send ALL linemen out of state when you are in or near the target area of a massive storm which will obviously knock out power.
I am simply aghast.
YMMV
Obviously the linemen are not at fault.
Geesh!
What a horrible corporation. I won’t be surprised if they are sued out of existence as a result
So sorry to hear that…are other adjoining states like VA, WV or KY stepping up for NC and SC?
Prepare for round # 2! Praying from the Yucatan
$5 Pres. Trump is in to visit or at least flyover before any serious FedGov help.
I’m sure he has already assigned competent adults to attend to this catastrophe.
Allegedly one local policeman said that there were bodies everywhere, towns disappeared, neighborhoods destroyed, nothing left.
I sure hope it was NOT a troll who tweeted that.
Can never know in this day and age of demented psychopathic mutants
Narrowly avoided it in east TN. I’ve seen much video from local FB feeds, they’re not lying. It’s really really bad.
Thanks.
I saw the Governor patiently explain that death counts will take time.
So I expect the worse.
Towns and neighborhoods don’t suddenly disappear, totally washed away in flood waters without few fatalities.
The East Tennessee District of the Church of the Nazarene is organizing aid out of Lenoir City, TN. Here is the contact information copied from my email. NDR = Nazarene Disaster Relief. The website mentioned is Disaster Response | East Tennessee Church of the Nazarene (etnnazdistrict.org)
“We are in the process of establishing a base of operation to help in Elizabethton, Greenville, and Newport. Flooding continues and access is difficult in many places.
Right now, bottled water is an immediate need, and we will be attempting to deliver that Monday Sept. 30th or Tuesday October 1st to Greenville. If you can bring bottled water to Lenoir City First Church at 111 Sharp Drive, Lenoir City, TN 37771, it will be taken to Greenville from there. Please call the church at 865-986-7959 to make sure we are ready to receive it.
If you cannot bring water but would like to assist with the flooding in upper East TN, you may take up an offering or send donations to the district Treasurer, Scott Ezell, and mark it East TN Floods—NDR and it will be made available to meet the needs of getting food, water, equipment and assistance directly to those in need.
If you would like to volunteer, there will be a time when that will be needed. There will be debris removal, mudding out homes, chain saw work, delivery of goods and equipment, loading/unloading/sorting, etc. Please go to the district website, click on the NDR button and fill out the appropriate form that fits you so we have a good idea and can be best
prepared for teams to serve.
If you have questions please text them to Pastor David D. Smith at 865-250-8048. He will get back to you as soon as he can.

Thank you so much.
Reporting from Saluda NC southern slope of mountains on I-26. Rainfall from 9/25-9/29 (23.41 inches reported (I’m a GSP spotter) to Greenville GSP weather bureau. No power, land phone, cell phone or Government crews for except for a crew trying to get one lane of major roads in Saluda open since event on Friday. Saluda is at top of ridge so flooding was mainly downslope except for street and minor property flooding. Winds were up to Hurricane+ strength in many gusts Friday AM. Major catastrophic tree damaged (since old trees had leaves on them and up rooted) properties since , Power lines, poles and transformers are down. Gas is hard to find since only one station has generator and lines to it are 1/2 mile long as cars on I-26 were unable to find any gas coming from Ashville south on I-26. Our only communication since Friday AM has been by amateur radio until Hot spot Wi-Fi came up this morning. Local police did not have communication. A power crew from Canada had to wait in line for Gas two hours to get Gas for chainsaws. Locals with chain saws are getting some roads open as trees with a diameter of 36 to 40 inches take time to cut away from across the roads.
Bless all of those helping Saluda.
Making it worse was the soaking rains we’d had before.
Saluda, down the road from Hendersonville. I have relatives over that way, bordering Pisgah NF.
Canada power and locals with chain saws. God bless them every one.
Thank God.
From somebody who lives in the area and was unable to get into Asheville in order to provide help:
Excellent video, thanks for posting.
As I understand, my mom told me years ago, there has only been one NC governor from western North Carolina. I think it’s Zebulon Vance in 1800s from Buncombe Co/Asheville.
I’ve been thru that area of Biltmore Village many times. As well as that I40 over US 74 looking towards Blue Ridge Pkwy bridge.
All those billions wasted in Ukraine.
Searching for relevant, current info in general news sites yields nearly nothing regarding NC conditions and rescue…. That is very strange. Thanking God for Sundance, Treehouse, and you all.
If you do searches on YouTube and be sure to include the word “live” you might find a few current reports.
Fox weather channel is covering it
I lived in Cameron, NC for 18 years and left because of flooding in my home from Hurricane Michael in 2018. I received no assistance from the state of NC and am still paying for my losses. At that time Roy Cooper had just started up the political ladder from his representing the county I lived in. I never supported him politically as he was a democrat who claimed to be a Christian and yet supported the democrat platform. I would call his office and call him out on his so-called faith and accused him for being a hypocrite! I told his people to tell him to not claim to be a Christian! Now this hurricane has badly hurt NC and my heart and my prayers go out to those who are suffering. But I have little faith in Gov Cooper! Only GOD can help these people~
Many North Carolinians remember Matthew and then Florence, two years later and almost as bad. Worse in some sense because there were a lot of people who had finally been able to get supplies and labor to fix their homes only to see a repeat nightmare of Matthew. Cooper is all about Cooper and what it will take to get him into the White House. He was hoping to get the Harris nod this year. He put boys in girls’ bathrooms but I guess he didn’t put enough tampon machines in the boys’ bathrooms for Harris!!
People talk about Florida’s hurricane history, but NC has had more than its fair share. I guess in part because we stick out so prominently on the east coast. I used to have a map of NC hurricanes for the past century, wish I could find it again. It was glaringly “impressive”.
Some 30 years ago I read that maps of the Outer Banks had been completely redrawn several times since 1900 because of hurricanes. A few more redrawings since then.
Cooper is the MOST PATHETIC POLITICIAN IN NC HISTORY, which is saying something. If not the “most” he butts right up next to it. Emphasis on butt.
The NC governor is a democrat. Say no more.

When the earthquake hit Haiti in 2010, Samaritan’s Purse immediately showed up with loads of plywood to build structures to house people.
Hillary Clinton showed up with George Soros.
Cooper is an idiot. I live in Western NC in Murphy. We really lucked out as most of the bad rain was just East of us, and West of us in Tenn. Cooper does not care about us. I pray for the people who are still stranded.
Horrific
Samaratin’s Purse is accepting donations, 100% of which will go to recovery efforts.

NC governor has a press conference scheduled for 12:30 today (Sunday, the 29th).
Roku news has 2 NC channels one out of Asheville and another from Charlotte.
Western NC here. We (my family) are fine. Our power stayed on, we have a landline, and we have Star Link, so this has not inconvenienced us in any way. However, our friends and neighbors aren’t as lucky. Asheville is simply trashed, and between here and there, there’s no telling what the situation is.
Many are without power. A friend who is without power and needs a CPAP stayed with us last night, saying he couldn’t go a third night without it. No cell service in the county. No internet. Most businesses are cash only, including the grocery stores and the gas stations. Bread aisle looked like it does when snow is predicted–empty. A large convoy of utility trucks was heading out the last two morning, so I know they’re working as fast as they can to restore power. No idea when cell and internet service will be restored.
Friends in the next county were trapped by flooding two days ago, but it looks like most of the rivers have returned to their banks. The flash floods left debris and standing water all over the place and it’s astounding to imagine what it must have looked like at the peak. A traveler in the gas station this morning was asking for an atlas, since there’s no GPS to guide him. I gave him directions on how to get around Asheville and to the east; once he’s in Georgia he’ll be okay as far as having GPS to guide him.
Mountain folks are can-do people and not reliant on the government, but it would be nice to think that they have our backs. They don’t. Ray Cooper is a terrible Governor and doesn’t care because he’s a lame duck…and an even lamer Governor. We help each other. We will pull through.
Thanks for the local report.
Question for you: What is your take on the number of residences that are 2nd homes owned by people who live elsewhere?
My second cousin (my cousin’s son) and his wife live in Austin and have a 2nd home in Asheville. From what I’ve heard, there are plenty of other out-of-towners who have found Asheville to be a place where they want to live part-time.
Interesting!!!
We’re about 70 miles from Asheville, down near the corner where Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina meet. We have many 2nd homes in our county. The population about doubles in the summer months. Very popular spot for 2nd homes, especially from Floridians. Even the Democrats are conservative out in the rural parts of western NC. I’d only be guessing as to what percentage of homes are secondary vs. primary residences, but I know in our little neighborhood we have three part-time residents out of fifteen homes, so that’s 20%.
Asheville is the San Francisco of the East Coast. The city board voted to approve reparations a couple of years ago. The left has dominated the city of Asheville in recent years, and the city itself is in a sad state. We used to enjoy going to concerts and other events there. Now we avoid it. If you go 20 miles outside of Asheville, it’s wonderful, but you couldn’t pay me to live in the city limits. The roads are inadequate and when there’s a snag there are few ways to get around; you just have to wait.
As negative as all that sounds, western North Carolina is a virtual paradise. Beautiful mountains, mostly pleasant and interesting people, some great places to eat, low taxes, and mostly pleasant temperatures.
Thank you.
I misspoke. My cousin’s wife has a vendor space in an art/antiques mall in Asheville. Their second home is a cabin outside of Old Fort. She was in the area last week but returned home to Austin on Monday. One of the neighbors in Old Fort said that the cabin is okay but nobody can get into or out of the immediate vicinity.
I’m pretty sure this is the mudslide that has been preventing ingress and egress. It’s good to see that the earth movers were already at work earlier.
The only time I ever was in that area was to attend a week-long church retreat at Ridgecrest when I was in high school. So beautiful.
Good reminder to always keep a few hundred dollars in cash around.
Two reasons why thoroughly incompetent Cooper got elected: McCrory (R) got blasted to the nth for a coal ash spill by Duke Energy; and (2) election fraud in Durham, where the counting of 98,000 votes (among other things) was questioned. McCrory lost by roughly 7,000 votes, +/- a thousand or so. Republicans won throughout the state that year, except for governer and AG.
I met Cooper circa 2005 when he was AG. He is a LITTLE man in EVERY way, except for the size and craftiness of the political machine that has floated him and his ilk for decades.
Mike Easley, criminal, hauled into court after he left office. Bev Perdue, criminal, decided against running for a second term because she knew they had they goods on her too. SOMEbody needs to figure out how to bring down all the rest of that hot stinking mess. It’s RIDICULOUS AND EMBARRASSING how long these evil dimokrats have been jerking the strings in NC politics.
Was having an issue with our business and hubbie with a well connected Democrat from area tried to get us in to see Perdue while she was governor. Said she would be happy too if we paid her $5000.00.
Sounds a lot like Georgia politics. Just as corrupt.
I saw that steal too. Durham .. always Durham for the steal.
The sad thing is it’s getting ready to happen again. The dems and rinos have trashed Mark Robinson.
Rest assured that if BLM/AntiFA had been in this kind of trouble, Pooper SCooper would have been out there kneeling with them, coordinating emergency responses, and lining up help. Pooper SCooper is as apolitical as Merrick Garland is. He is doing everything to keep Mark Robinson from being elected governor in orderfor Stein to continue the Demo=Marxist reign from 200 N. Blount St.
Pooper SCooper. I’m gonna borrow that first chance I get.
Exactly right on all the rest too. I can smell the stench all the way up to WF.
And local media are doing everything they can to help the evil dimokrats keep the mansion and AG. They have repeatedly hammered Robinson about his words. but NOTHING about any of the verbal threats against PDJT.
My daughter lives in Asheville.
I finally heard from her last night. Her house is good (she lives on a hill) but trees down everywhere.
The valleys are horrible. She told me she had heard that the local Wal Mart had been looted.
She has been helping her neighbors clear trees from roads and driveways.
My daughter went to Asheville from Louisiana. She has experience with hurricanes. But the flooding there is terrible.
There are old tobacco barns along the Swannanoa River full of antiques.
All under water.
Walmart looted. At least people got to it before the insurance adjusters. I was in environmental consulting during Katrina. I did not go there with my office, but I heard our folks tell this story. Everything of useful value in Walmarts and similar were being destroyed since it was a total insurance loss. Tents, sleeping bags knifed and shredded. Grills destroyed. All because didn’t want liability if someone gets hurt and sues.
The Ingles Supermarket warehouse just east of Asheville is trashed, according to the cashier I spoke with this morning. The supply chain interruption will hurt small towns. I’m glad your daughter is safe.
Thank God your daughter is ok. So glad to hear it.
Thanks, Alley.

Our Blairsville GA church’s SamPurse response team is right now trying to find a backroad route into Boone.
until flood drain out what can be done?
Food and supply drops. Helicopter rescues. Drones to assess damage specifics. Communicate rescue plans and give instructions for what people should do and what to expect via air drops and all emergency services broadcast on news/all possible channels such as Ham radios.
Set up communication chains using all resources including people who have cell and are in a position to help and to assist victims in getting messages out for life threatening needs such as necessary medical devices, water, food.
Emergency services to include all first responders and national guard and if needed federal military.
TPTB know how to do all this and more. They just aren’t doing it.
is not TVA in charge of hydro control for the area?

Tone. Deaf.
He’s a lame duck governor and doesn’t care. Left out demoncrat.
“First, Governor Roy Cooper is isolated and alone. There are no state emergency officials next to him. He is not in an emergency response posture; nor is he in a coordination center with the officials that matter. 15 minutes of time during a period of extreme crisis is a lot of time to waste. This should be a press conference with every state emergency official, from every responding agency, surrounding him to offer specifics on what they are doing.”
But he is dressing the part. Zelensky-like.
While former Gov McCrory (R) would’ve been ALL OVER IT, helicopter visits, multiple meetings and press conferences every day and so on. The contrast is appalling.
Yes, watching this in live time is excruciatingly educational.
That figures. Wherever President Trump went, he was in a suit and tie – and always “in command” without any costume needed.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is a Democrat attorney no business experience. Cooper defeated the first Republican elected in the 21st century Pat McCrory (businessman) in 2016. Just a little factual info on who Roy Cooper is and the voters who elect the politicians in North Carolina.
The only reason Cooper got elected (even as Repubs won so much else across the state) was because of an evil dimokrat elections supervisor and state court system, which subsequently got flipped. Now 5-2 conservative. One of a few bright spots for 2024.
😞🙏🏻
Only Trump can help bring the attention of this situation in Appalachia to the country. Only Trump is capable of raising the needed relief funds to this region.
I am certain we will learn all the details soon.
He is not one to advertise his charitable assistance in times of severe need.
Besides, PDJT and his team are concentrating up on the task at hand and not on keeping us aghast onlookers updated
Doesn’t the State invite FEMA to help coordinate the response?
YEP. Que evil limp-lip dimokrat guv Roy Cooper, even more absent after Helene than the Louisiana guv was after Katrina.
Prayers for all impacted by this disaster.
Given the importance of the upcoming elections, this is a good example to remind your friend, family and community that “you get the governement you vote for”
Mark Robinson should come out of his black nazi porn bunker and go on full attack over this. He has an opportunity to put that BS behind him and remind NC that leadership is more than virtue signaling and slanderous lies.
Attack! Attack! Attack! It’s the only way to win. Get a bunch of volunteers and donations, heavy equipment, all he can muster to western NC and show what real leadership looks like.
Or he can stay in his bunker, hunkered down with hand burns and butt hurts.
He’s on the ground in Franklin County not in his bunker! Pay attention.

If anyone is still unsure of how the Govt regards the general welfare of its citizens……
They could give 2 shits about you!!
Yes. Fact Truth.
Governor Cooper joins an exclusive club that includes Jim Hodges (hurricane Floyd) and Kathleen Blanco (Katrina).
Can you believe that decades later, in the 21st century were seeing a replay of Katrina … However Helene’s catastrophic devastation and death toll appears to be even worse.
Unbelievable.
Americans must prepare for any eventuality and they must understand that situations may arise during their lifetimes when nobody is coming to save them in time.
Absolutely correct…..If you grow up in Fla. that is a given, since you are trained from a young age to keep supplies and hunker down for the long hurricane season. They recommend storing up to 3 weeks of water/food/stuff which is an average disaster recovery time before normal life starts to return. Then it is months of cleanup, closed businesses, higher costs, lack trees, lost pets, damaged infrastructure, etc…
People must be trained over and over about what preparation means and why they need to do it. Although some will be in the path of destruction and not survive, many will and need to be self reliant.

Finally heard from family in Weaverville… they are safe! Flooded, no power etc etc… took them all this time to get a signal to call family.
Bunscomb (sp!) County manager did a zoom meeting yesterday…. and led off by saying trash collection would be delayed due to the storms! I listened for about 15 minutes to learn what was going on there….and gave up.
Fox News is finally reporting on what is going on in Asheville… hopefully, they will start reporting more on it.
What a relief for you to heard at last from your loved ones!
Let’s hope recovery efforts exponentially speed up for the entire region
