I am certainly no expert on North Carolina politics, but what I can tell you after watching this interview is that North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is completely incapable of dealing with the catastrophic crisis unfolding right now in WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA.
Far-east Tennessee and Western North Carolina are cut-off from the rest of the world. Not only have the main artery roads, interstates and bridges been wiped out, but also communication lines, fiber optic cables, transmission towers, cell towers, the works have been destroyed.
If you remember the communication blackout, and subsequent slow rolling information stream that took four days to surface in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina (2005), you will have reference for why it is taking the nation so long to realize what is happening in Western NC.
The video below is exactly what you do not want to see in this situation.
Last night Governor Roy Cooper delivered a shocking “exclusive interview” with WLOS News 13. What makes the interview “shocking” is not just what Cooper says, but the manner in which he says it. This guy is in a bubble without any concept of what is happening on the ground. This interview represents everything you NEVER WANT TO SEE, in a state of emergency. WATCH:
First, Governor Roy Cooper is isolated and alone. There are no state emergency officials next to him. He is not in an emergency response posture; nor is he in a coordination center with the officials that matter. 15 minutes of time during a period of extreme crisis is a lot of time to waste. This should be a press conference with every state emergency official, from every responding agency, surrounding him to offer specifics on what they are doing.
Next, listen carefully to what Governor Cooper is saying. You will hear the words “learning”, “coordinating”, “facilitating”, “attempting to understand” etc., intertwined in the responses.
Governor Cooper has no idea what to do and he is deferring response to the private sector, who are stuck inside the crisis region. The scale of the crisis is too large for the private sector to handle right now. People are trapped and literally exposed to deadly situations during these 15 minutes of nothing.
Western North Carolina is in a state of crisis. People are trapped. Entire small towns and communities are isolated by lost roads and bridges. Many people can only be reached by helicopter. Communication in the region is almost impossible. The outside world has no way to understand just how bad things are in specific areas because those areas are cut-off from all transit and communication.
Now is not the time for politics. This issue is about competency.
Now is a time for action. This is day #3, and as each day passes the desperation gets worse. Remember, the standard rule of thumb from all emergency officials is for everyone to be self-sufficient for 3 days. After those 3 days, responses and resources should be well positioned.
When day #4 comes and there is still no adequate response, you get a Katrina outcome; desperation starts to manifest in social breakdown.
The people of North Carolina are good, self-sufficient and resourceful people who will help each other and their neighbor. No, they are not Katrina dependency minded. These are bootstrapped, solid people who know how to survive. However, there are also many people in the region in less fortunate situations; older, perhaps more vulnerable, perhaps less prepared, and currently cut off from the world.
Governor Cooper needs to get there himself.

Sundance, this reminds me of William Forstchen’s book (and now series) that “One Second After.” The premise is a bit different, but basically there is an EMP that causes total disruption to the country’s infrastructure. The 2009 book is an inside look at how devastating an incident, such as Helene, and the aftermath can be. Ironically, the story takes place primarily in Black Mountain, NC. The horrors, the violence, the lack of food, communication and medicine all play an integral part in this story. Seeing this feels video, hearing this “leader” scares the heck out of me!

After Beryl we were able to power our starlink modem using the generator. It was the only means of communication. As long as you turned on wifi calling and connected to our network you could call and text (no pictures). All our neighbors soon found out and were coming here to call family and insurance.
On insurance and repair people, most needed pictures; what we figured out was to take video with phone then upload to YouTube then share the link (which could be sent via email or text msg)
I had switched to starlink just 2 months before Beryl. Xfinity and ATT were down for about 10 days.

It is unimaginably bad in western NC. Interstates and roads closed, no food, no gas.
At this point the stay off the roads mantra stinks of a coverup so people won’t realize the scale of the disaster.
And with no communication people don’t realize the scale of the problem they are in.
Not realizing that they will need to drive for a few hours to get gas etc means even if they can get out they are depleting their resources looking for things that don’t exist locally anymore.
The red cross is not being helpful at all. When people try to call the red cross, thye are being told that there is nothing they can do because of the scale of the disaster. I was on hold for hours yesterday and didn’t get through to a person.
I would not trust the Red Cross.
It’s not that I trust them, but there are no viable alternatives. All comms are down. Fire departments are not answering, dispatch is not answering, sheriff is not answering, police is not answering. No one has power or comms there to get ahold of. And the governor has basically said he will not help and to contact the red cross…
More prudent to wait until comms/infrastructure is somewhat restored. There are limited groups to trust and organizations have to be capable to accept donations and properly distribute. The group to trust so far who is stepping up is Samaritan’s Purse.
Sometimes getting in touch with groups in your home town can gather supplies and bring them to affected areas. They find out where items are needed, children’s clothing, food, pet supplies, meds, etc…and make arrangements to deliver directly. That happened in FL and private groups did amazing humanitarian work.
Contact Little Ivy Baptist Church Mars Hill, NC. They were distributing water and meals to people. It’s some days now, and local people are helping local people. Samaritan’s, red cross, and the state/fed government don’t have a presence in water or food.

And, If you know of airlift services try to encourage them to go and help rescue the remaining people that are trapped and can’t get out.

President Trump will be fully aware of the devastation and the urgency to provide what is needed quickly. After 9/11, he was on the ground the next day doing what he could, providing what he could arrange to help.

In the upstate of SC, our local “Chainsaw Army” has been busy since yesterday morning clearing paths on most of the roads here. It ain’t pretty, but the utility company needs to get their trucks through before they can get the power restored. Still have about 90% of our county with no electricity, but we are MUCH better off than our neighbors just to our north.

Will do. My mom lost her FL condo home in 2004, along with many others in the complex. She was 81 yo. I know what this loss means. she rebuilt. My sister & I still own her home. I hold my breath every summer I spend there with my sister as hurricane season begins. It’s on a barrier island, east coast. Oddly, none of the condos have ever flooded (ground up). Devastation came from 2 direct cane hits w/wind – roof damage.
It’s devasting. I’ll keep posting stuff. I’m very tuned in to all this. Been through it.

Sundance, actually the Asheville area was overrun by liberals in the last decade and is actually very similar now to New Orleans during Katrina. You have a large lower income group of antifa/blm style focus with a thin working class and a large upper income yuppy group.

DeSantis is a pro at press conferences, with the disaster posse right there with him. He gives details to inform the public, so everyone is aware of progress being made. It may not reach everyone, but he does stay on top of the situation.

Dem-Gov Cooper is not fit to serve NC. Literally, his lack of a quick response will be the reason many will die – just like in Katrina/New Orleans. I ever have gotten the photos of the floating bodies out of my head. Cooper will be responsible for many, many deaths.

Not to pile on but your point is valid. Maybe the shock of not having tech to survive will open many people’s eyes. They will actually solve problems face to face and do some critical thinking. It is a hard lesson to be cut off, but may prove noteworthy in the long run. Having basic life skills, and working with others in an emergency is a necessity not a choice. Clearing debris, checking on neighbors, taking in lost pets, administering first aid, sharing food, etc…think war zone aftermath and go from there.
Tech is a tool in the toolbox and has its place, however nothing will ever replace the human connection.
We can’t exactly scream at each other across the hills and hollers. They are cut off or blocked by thousands of tons of debris.
Tech is necessary in the world we now live in.
I understand your point, however IMHO Tech will only go so far. It is basic life skills that may save your life when everything else fails. People have been warning for years to be more self sufficient in case of catastrophe. There is eventually help on the way, but having stocked food, water, firewood, etc. is a must as there will always be risk of disasters.
Working face to face refers to if you have neighbors within a helpful distance, then come together and make a plan to share resources. Obviously if you are too far then you have to be self reliant for quite a long time.
Just because they had prepared does not mean their supplies survived the devastation.

I watched several news videos of the authorities in Greene County, TN, and surrounding areas. They are all over everything and working day and night. Citizen teams from all over the state are loading up trucks and horse trailers and taking supplies to the designated drop off to get water and food to the people. They’ve got helicopters running, swift boats running, building temporary bridges to get people out, citizens armed with chain saws out working, etc. It’s an all of Tennessee effort to help fellow Tenneseeans. They are honest about the devastation, but always say, “we will not rest until every Tennesseean is rescued”. There are emergency numbers set up for people to call to find lost loved ones. The coordination, communication, and work ethic is amazing.
Praying for the people of North Carolina that God will work wonders and miracles in spite of the overwhelmed Governor.

This needs to be a military response ASAP; many military units available from bases in the area. Deploy troops by air, ground and waterway, build temporary living quarters, field kitchens, latrines, etc. Door to door search and rescue. Army engineers overseeing road construction.
Dead animal cleanup will be a huge effort.
FEMA and USACOE will be weeks in mobilizing.
They are probably still waiting for orders or some such nonsense. Governors must waive the red tape bureaucratic BS and get boots on the ground, like they do for allies in those foreign wars. His reports and the abundent comments are the most response being provided during and since the storm. Through this ad-hoc networking, several lives have been directly saved, including a mother who got helicoptered out in time to have her baby. Both are reported doing well.
Also note that a private helicopter service has posted a link to report needs and is running relief and rescue flights since yesterday.
One of my local County Commisioner canditates left here (Person County, eastern NC) on Thursday leading a group of utility workers and equipment the 5 hour trip to that area. Brann’s (local) Wrecker Service has positioned a 40 foot trailer for donations in conjunction with the Sheriff and has fillid it in 24 hours.

FEMA is not a first responder by any stretch of the imagination regardless of their public stance and mandate. An extended family member works at FEMA; big on conventions and traveling to meetings but has full-time nanny for her kids. I do not see her ruining her manicure in a disaster zone.

The kid is on the spectrum and is devastated with fear.

Sitting here in Southern IL going through my contacts. Having experienced major flood disasters here and assisting in Mayfield Ky tornado a few years ago. But unfortunately most that I have are recovery based that can go in after the water goes down. The Southern Baptist Teams are some of the best I have worked with. There are other great teams from Methodist, Pentecostal, and Lutheran Organizations as well, I just have not had them working in our area as much. 2 great Organizations that might have resources for rescue before the water goes down are Operation Rubicon who are fantastic, and Mercury One who also do great work. Most of the rescue teams I have worked with are Fire Dept based (MABAS here) and Law Enforcement (ILEAS), But don’t know of any private. If anyone does have personal info on some please post.
My suggestion for donations or support is to donate to some of these organizations that will be operating in these areas. Will start contacting them to see who is on the way there and what areas they are headed to. As wide spread as this is, they will all be spread very thin and will be in need of volunteers.
Also does anyone know if NC has any type of STARCOM Radio communication? Or are any Ham Operaters in the area? They can be the best source of info in times like this.

I caught myself foolishly comparing this to our severe storms in the midwest.
Our damage can be horrific, but not over a huge area. Roads/bridges remain intact.
Also, our tornadoes take place in mid-summer.
Schools are out.
There is still daylight at 9PM to clean -up.
But not in October. Winter is fast approaching.

I posted on the earlier article about the devestation in the Lake Lure area in North Carolina. We were there on vacation and just left yesterday. Because we were totally cut off communication wise, we had no idea how truly bad and widespread the disaster was.
We knew we needed to leave because our supplies of potable water were running low. So we navigated over downed power lines, around and under fallen trees using an old paper map. Luckily we ran into a local road crew in Polk County, who gave us directions using little country roads to get out of the area.
The folks who depend on the federal government to come to their rescue in that area will be waiting a very long time.
I have never before been in a situation with no power, no running water, no means of communication inside or out. We are senior citizens and pretty resourceful but this opened my eyes.
Pray for North Carolina. Help anyway you can.
But also take a hard look at what you would do if you faced a similiar situation in your own home. For starters, ordered some battery operated and hand crank radios and lanterns to have on hand. I plan on getting a rain barrel and stocking some water.

Soooo I utilized an overflow spot on backed up gutters. I was amazed that with each mini downpour, I could fill this large bucket in 5 or so minutes! I then would dump it into a large bin near backdoor.
Yes I initially got soaked… but after my efforts– taking 2 pitchers on each bathroom trip & we were good to go! 😁
We gathered rain water into a plastic storage container during the storm at the VRBO. Also utilized the water from the hot tub for flushing. Both sources were a God send.

CM– I’ve got two large rain barrels set up to collect water from the roof of my small house, 50 gal. capacity ea. When it rains in AZ, they fill up immediately and then a torrent gushes out of the downspout from the roof so fast that a lake forms in my back yard and patio.
My heart breaks for the people suffering now. They have a long, difficult road ahead. Now is when the absence of a good leader is sorely felt.
This is exactly what I was trying to describe yesterday but got a LOT of pushback telling me that the terrain is the big issue rather than competent leadership / management in the recovery effort.

In my opinion, while the damage is catastrophic for the folks who live in the small towns and rural areas affected by the floods and winds, they are nonetheless a small minority of NC’s total population, which is much denser in the middle and eastern parts of the state.
IMHO, if anything, the Democrat Governor’s incompetence will only boost the chances that unaffiliated / independent voters and Democrat voters whose families have been hurt by his failures will NOT be predisposed or easily persuaded to re-elect him or any successor his party recommends, especially if the successor has been a part of Cooper’s administration.
The citizens of North Carolina affected by the devastation, caused by flooding from the heavy rains, need to see state leadership taking action. Coordinating with other state officials, to send help to those areas. Unfortunately, NC has an incompetent governor, who is overwhelmed by having to make some serious decisions. Governor if you don’t know what to do, get someone who does, to take control of the situation. The citizens need action, not BS interviews from an isolated room.
