I work in manufacturing, the bone and muscle is the journeymen, the skilled craftsmen with decades of experience. They are the guys that solve problems, get things done and make things work. Most that I know are old guys, their expertise is about to retire and there hasn’t been a strong enough apprenticeship in place to be able to replace them.
You can not flip a light switch and massively expand manufacturing.
Nope.
Need ways to incentivize extension of careers to transfer that knowledge.
If there’s a problem, there’s a solution, and none are more open to innovative solutions than PDJT.
To go from having no experience to becoming a Tool and Die Maker worth their salt takes about 8 to 12 years. One of the guys that work for me is 69 years old. He physically can not extend his career. I’m in my mid 60s, I’m not working until I’m 80.

I’m asking what can you imagine might help solve this?
I’m in no way advocating replacing peoples jobs with technology, but if training takes 8-10 years technology may fill the void with advancements in scanning and new materials used in 3-D printing.
I’m not being fatalistic, just realistic.
Businesses want to hire people that already have experience, there needs to be an incentive for business to embrace a robust apprenticeship program and an incentive for the youth to become an apprentice in manufacturing.
When I served my apprenticeship, the pay scale between a journeyman and an apprentice was about 6 fold. Today it’s less than 2 fold. As minimum wage increased, the journeyman wages lagged way behind, to being almost stagnate.
I remember Apprenticeship being big in Term One.
Clearly we are at a crisis point, where it’s almost less about getting more qualified than it is preventing the massive loss of competency and skills.
That minimal wage gap, suppressing incentive to strive for Journeyman level competence, surely needs to be considered in a Trumpian fashion . . . gonna review his Agenda 47 to see how close he comes to that, but I think you ought to put your thoughts together on the matter and share them with him somehow.
We have a local community college in our area that has stepped up in apprenticeship programs. They are tailoring their programs to emerging and existing industry in this area. I think that’s a good place to start.
There may be Americans already working abroad in those manufacturing plants who may be convinced to move back to the USA to work and train others.
Sounds like an opportunity to add another plank to PDJT’s platform . . .

Or, for that matter, hire some QUALIFIED foreigners to run our apprentice programs.
We need to replace many of the trade schools and technical institutes that once dotted the landscape.
It’s possible some of these retirement age men would enjoy occasional guest lecture spots, with or without an honorarium, when things get to that, “for richer or poorer but not for lunch” phase.

My dad, too, was a tool & dye maker. He retired early at 63 so he could he could enjoy the rest of his life. He made it to almost 80.
Trade & vocational schools are our way back, as well as on-job training. Communist Dems have rendered colleges & universities useless. I admire Mike Rowe who is bringing back vocational schools, etc. I believe he’s pals with Trump.

The biggest expense in manufacturing is the machinery and maintaining them, keeping the wiring in good shape, protecting it from rodents, etc. Then specialized tooling that is needed for unique parts, which is where a good tool and die maker comes into play. The fluids, oils, coolant, etc. are also a big expense. It’s obvious you aren’t a business owner, just an employee…. The main point being is the machinery is the most important tool. Machines are so advanced nowadays, only the basic skills are needed relative to setting up and getting production going. The older tool and die guys had it hard because the old machinery was extremely difficult to setup, program. Then you have to train an operator how to run a machine, that may be too difficult for them to operate when one thing goes wrong. The new machines don’t necessarily have those problems for the most part.
Correct, RS. But you can get education and vocational training BACK ON THE RIGHT TRACK so that as these skilled craftsmen and women retire, they can train their replacements properly. There’s where people like Mike Rowe come into play – I do believe he might have a seat in Trump’s cabinet waiting for him.
