As many of you are aware, in April we lost our primary Ad revenue because we refused to enforce Google moderation rules in our comment system.
The ridiculous demand for content control within our proprietary commenting system was actually the culmination of years of effort by Google and tech allies who were looking for ways to demonetize our platform and control information from this site.
As a direct and specific result without your direct support now, CTH cannot exist.
Retaining our ability to research, share and most importantly, discuss ongoing events, has been my #1 priority. Thank you again for your insight, wisdom, humor, friendship and support.
There are currently two methods to support CTH 2.0, our ongoing mission and discussion. However, depending on your browser settings (and ad blocker software) the second option may not be visible. There is a screengrab below showing what I am talking about.
The alternative financial support appears directly below the PayPal link in a yellow box as highlighted. Some have said browser settings can block visibility, and I have also heard it doesn’t show up on some mobile devices. I am not sure what the technical issue might be other than ISP filters (now becoming more problematic) and/or adblocking software.
Due to my personal requirements for Treehouse user privacy, and my firm stance on not retaining user data lists, the alternative system does not provide a subscriber option. If you use the alternative support function, each time you would want to support CTH, you have to click it and reenter your information. No data is saved.
Financial support through PayPal remains the most efficient and stable way to support CTH. I know they have received a lot of criticism, much of it well placed; however, my own experience with PayPal has been solid. When CTH was deplatformed and under attack from Big Tech (Eye of Sauron) to their credit PayPal stood firm and supported CTH in continuing their service.
While my experience with PayPal seems to run counter to the outcome described by others, the unexpected supportive position from PayPal made a strong impression on me. Again, perhaps unique, not sure why, but my experience with them has been very good. If that ever changed, I would immediately let you know. The data security and convenience of their system is also solid and useful.
Regardless, there are two options: (1) PayPal and (2) Proprietary. Due to legal caution and the data privacy construct, the Proprietary alternative has a 30-day access lag built in. Meaning, if you use that option, in approximately 30 days the funds become accessible, whereas support through the preferred PayPal option is immediate.
Thanks to everyone who helps offset all site hosting costs, our voice and information remains in the fight. We are committed to staying strong, fiercely protective of user data privacy, and anti-fragile so that we can withstand big tech (Google) targeting.

Okay. Here’s my problem. I have one credit card. I keep a zero balance. I had my account compromised – not once – FIVE times.
Every time I was issued a new card- BAM – fraudsters were charging against my account within days.
The fraud department, who never contacts the bank’s clients personally, did contact me. In the middle of talking to a fraud dept. representative, someone was in the process of attempting to use my account!
I was told point blank to stop ordering, or paying for, anything via the internet.
I have friends order for me– or purchase from stores.
I have contributed to Treehouse in the past. I can afford it. I really wish I could send a certified check, a money order, or pay in some other way.
me too. I’m an older gal, and I love to send snail mail with a stamp………I wish there was some way……don’t trust all the credit card stuff…..at all!
Buy a prepaid card . Use that for donations.
You will personally guarantee that a prepaid card I buy, unseen by you, will be useable for a PayPal donation? I wish folks would just quit trying to flip the premise. There is obviously a desire by people to just send an old-fashioned bank check or money order.

Also Capital One. ANY time they see a charge that appears unusual — like if all of a sudden I shop at a store I’ve never shopped at before — they put the charge on hold and their fraud dept. calls me to confirm it was really me.
Cap One also offers an interest-bearing CHECKING account with no transaction limits or constraints.

Yes, Capital One will literally stop a transaction. It has happened to me three or four times over the last few years. The latest time was two weeks ago when I spent a somewhat out of the ordinary (for me) amount of dollars on an online purchase from a company I’ve never made one from before. By this time I figured I knew exactly what was happening as it was taking place and I immediately made a call to Capital One where I was able to take care of the entire situation through the automated system by assuring them that yes indeed I did try to make that purchase. They reinstated my ability to make that purchase immediately and I went back to my computer screen and completed the transaction.
capital one has disposable one-use credit card numbers. they work great.
This happened to me. When I ordered a sale item from My Pillow. I was told by fraud dept that is a possibility.
I recommend a credit union if there is one you can get into, and use their credit card.
If you can’t get in a credit union, use a local/regional bank, NOT a national one.
Absolutely agree with Credit Union vs a Bank. Even local banks do not seem to remain ‘local’ for long, before being swallowed up the regional and then national Financial Institutions.
MOST credit unions have expanded their ‘field of membership’ so almost anybody can join. Most will also list their membership eligibility requirements on their website.If they have a community charter, than anyone in the community can join.
For those confused about the ‘membership’, credit unions are cooperatives / member owned. When you go there and open an account, you become a member. When I financed my auto through the dealership, they used a credit union that offered a better rate than my primary credit union… so I am a member of that credit union . It is worth exploring and, IMO, going through the hassle of moving your account – or opening a secondary account for credit card, savings account etc.
CONCUR 100%. After years of searching (coupled with my work history) I belong to and have cc’s from 3 credit unions and those are the only cards I use at all now, for anything and everything.
Their cards carry exactly the same protections as any other card, since they’re also Visa/MC/AMEX or whatever, same-same. Just notably lower interest rates plus very personal service in many cases. AND you can usually vote for leadership/board of directors/etc, when that time rolls around.
For various reasons, it’s getting easier to find a credit union that one can join. Nobody should automatically assume they don’t qualify for any.
@ Lorrie. If you are getting your CC card hacked that fast and that many times, your computer is probably hacked and some nefarious keystroke logging program is running in the background and sending your info to the evildoers
ALWAYS look for a lock and the address should be “HTTPS” for secure when sending money anywhere!
I have encountered patterns of “immediate” fraudulent use of a new card, even before I myself had ever used it. Which tells me quite clearly that the fraud is originating INSIDE the bank …
I have advised companies on such fraud cases, and inevitably it is “an inside job.” I tell them: “start with your CTO and work downward.”

Get a second credit card. I have found over the years that the credit cards that get compromised are the ones that my kids use to order games online. That said, whenever a card gets compromised, they just send me a replacement and I move on. Not a big deal. I was never on the hook for the money.
When my debit card number got stolen, there were $250 worth of charges made at a restaurant in Hong Kong. Took the bank 2 weeks to put that money back. I didn’t need that $250, but there were definitely times in my life when I did.

Since I switched to Brave, all the annoying pop-up junk has been filtered.
It’s not as robust a search engine as Firefox (or Google), for normal searches. But is a fairly good option.
In this high tech climate, there are virtually no safe ways to access the internet.
All we can do is take precautions.
I use malwarebytes for cyber safety on my computer. It’s pretty effective.
The search engine used is programmable.
Brave is just the browser….

Quite often that telephone number is how the company your transacting with knows it’s you. You get a DM message of a 5 digit number to insert.

Sorry, I had trouble navigating PayPal. I set it up just for this. I was trying to double the one I set up but could not figure it out. PayPal sent me back to the Treehouse to change it. I could not see how to do that here. I ended us canceling that one and setting up a new one.
Can the Admin send a little direction how to change the payment amount on an existing monthly payment so I can add more when I can or is that even possible.
CTH is the only recurring (and unfortunately not large) donation I make, and worth every penny.
Even PDJT doesn’t get recurring – but I prefer to give him appropriately-sized chunks at certain times…

Ping- commercial bandwidth from an internet service provider can cost well into 5 figures /month.
Power – kWh cost always on the rise. Factor in UPS backup power. Generator backup backup power. Expensive to own and operate.
Pipe – plumbing for cooling. IT equipment has to operate in a chilled air environment. Chillers and air handlers expensive to own and operate.
Hosting sites, data centers, provide all the above for a monthly fee.
Also the initial cost of servers, switches, hard drives, firewalls, etc. Add to that licensing fees, hardware, firmware, and software updates. Plus an IT group that keeps it all running. Expensive to own and operate.
Soon you’re taking about real money…that has to come from somewhere.
Money CTH doles out for our benefit.
Help to keep us from that dark, heinous, and dreaded…

Life is more complicated than it use to be and I’m sorry to say, I’m not able to live my best life. Only ignoring all that goes on around me makes it possible but I will pray for help with that too.

Running your own website, and domain name, in a server it the best solution.
You can always pay to have it hosted for you yet you keep control. You’d be surprised how things change when you are paying for a service, they treat you differently.
My domain name is hosted too. They don’t mess with my email at all.
Just go to Paypal and send in some money, it’s actually easy. If you don’t want to incur the charges, then link a checking account and use friends and family. If you’re worried about your checking account, then just open one only for Paypal use.
My other advice… NEVER expose your personal checking and savings accounts over the Internet. Only use a limited account and/or a credit card that you could live without for a couple of weeks. Think of those as “burner accounts”.
And, I’m thinking of using a burner phone as proxy for my real phone too…
