A personal example: about a decade ago, I became frustrated with the constant media attempt to desecrate the name of my Lord by taking His Holy Name in vain.
It had grown so prevalent that little children were hearing it at home and on tv so often that they were doing it, too – without even realizing they were breaking one of God’s 10 Commandments!
So, I wrote an essay about that, wherein I likened doing that to “crying wolf.” That sooner or later, a person might fall to their knees and sincerely beg God for mercy and for help – either for themselves or someone they loved, but that God might have heard them belittling his name one too many times, and their cries might fall on deaf ears.
I posted that essay as a “Story” on the social media du jour, frequented at that time by a lot of former classmates and friends.
One of my former classmates and a fairly close fellow participant in several school activities, as well as his having been an active member of a same-denomination small-town church responded to me SPECIFICALLY, even though my “Story” had been posted generally. In his crude short response, he used the F**k word.
At that point, my very best long-time friend, who had also been brought up in a very conservative family and who had attended all youth-adult activities with me weighed in by personal e-mail to me to the tune of around 14 preachy PAGES!
In it, she criticized ME! For having the audacity to write anything that might offend anyone!
She quoted scripture references left and right- using only those that supported her position (in a warped way). Then, she posted support for this guy and censure for me!
Keep in mind, this was all being done on MY personal social media page – not directed to any one person!
In case you wonder how I handled this, I’ll let you know:
The fellow in question, who used the bad language regarding this topic, had graduated from a well-known Christian university, the same denomination church that we had both attended.
He had always tended to be more impressed with himself than he had earned, and when he, while majoring in a pastoral field, had taken a course which delved into many different world religions, told me that he felt more closely aligned with with one of those than Christianity! He then proceeded to live what would be considered a self-centered less than moral life.
I’ll also point out that I personally knew of MANY times the female in question had not lived an exemplary life – such as having broken her hand hitting her husband when he was trying to get her to hurry, as they were going (once more) to be late for an important event!
I was so surprised and greatly saddened by her response to me! Had she simply said a word or two of support for the fact that using God‘s name in vain is indeed breaking one of the 10 Commandments, which she knew very well, it’s quite possible this fellow would’ve given the matter some thought. But in supporting him and critiquing me, she totally blew the opportunity!
She also blew apart a lifelong friendship, because I have never interacted with her again.
When someone tells you who they are – and shows you what they are, you need to take notice!
Years later, she also plowed through another long-time friendship when she hadn’t liked a social media post another friend’s close relative had made regarding HER close relative… and showed up at their door with a gun!
You read that right! I was informed of this by another person, and I sincerely hope she received help. That was not the person I used to know!
That was a long story to make a short point – living a Christian life can be very difficult at times. But our Lord and Savior said that if we are lukewarm, he will spew us from his mouth. We are to keep his rules, even when it’s hard.
Good for you for standing up for our Lord. I had similar results when I stood up for the Holy Word of God, the Bible, against the numerous well acclaimed false teachers within the “church”. Try that and see what happens. It let me know most “Christians” are more interested in being accepted by man rather than God. Most leadership within the church leads the way in promoting/upholding false teachers with prominent visible “leaders” pointing the way. I’ve seen people here on this site quote false teachers.
This is why our country is in such trouble, because the visible church is in such trouble. We desperately need God to grant US repentance revival and regeneration.
