A wave of IT outages created massive problems around the world today hitting several industries hard. Airlines seeing thousands of flight cancellations, internal and external tech systems affecting hospital banks, stock exchanges and other institutions have also been affected. Within many operational systems, Microsoft-based computers ceased to work.
The issue was traced to Crowdstrike, a familiar tech industry name for those who remember the DNC “data breech” and the subsequent Russian conspiracy theories / accusations it spawned {GO DEEP}.
ABC NEWS – […] CrowdStrike — an American cybersecurity technology firm that provides cloud workload protection, threat intelligence and cyberattack response services — said the outage is not a due to a cyber attack; it was caused by a software issue that has been identified and a fix had been deployed.
Some systems can be fixed and back up and running immediately — but for others it “could be hours, could be a bit longer” before everything is back up and running, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz told CNBC in an on-air interview. For some customers, it will take more than rebooting systems to work through fixes.
“CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted,” Kurtz said earlier Friday.
“We refer customers to the support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and continuous updates on our website. We further recommend organizations ensure they’re communicating with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels. Has someone made a wheel of all of the possible reasons why the election will be delayed or corrupted? Add this to it, security update to voting machines took the entire system down. I’m laughing now but as a person who likes to vote in-person on election day I won’t be laughing if I’m turned away due to an outage. Or told to use a paper ballot and then I go around to the back side of the polling place building and I see workers dumping ballots into a dumpster.

I live in AZ and a location close to me was to be open today for its first day of voting. I got there to drop off my ballot at 2:30 pm and was told their machines had been down since early open because of the outage. Was told I could come back tomorrow or next week, which I will do.

Unfortunately, with Bitlocker you’re at a loss because you first have to get the Bitlocker key to be able to do anything at all.
If you have a Microsoft account (which I think it makes you do now when you register Windows), you might be able to get the key from a different/unlocked computer by signing into that MS account and digging through your profile/details.
I don’t use bitlocker, so I can’t verify, but I believe MS keeps a lot of stuff in your MS account profile.
You don’t need an account. You can bypass it and hack it.
I suspected it would be that simple – boot into safe mode and delete the offending file. Trouble is, since the vast majority of CrowdStrike’s business would be for commercial PCs, the Bitlocker issue might be very common and the typical user would not have a clue about how to get around that.
This is as inexcusable as the SS screwup and the close proximity in time is interesting – very close to successful assassination attempt and less than a week later the largest IT outage in history. The worldwide Blob warning “don’t screw with us” Donald?

last night, somewhere around o100, our computers went down at work and we are all grumbling about “they usually let us know in advance” when they plan to shut the computer system down for maintenance. We could not access doctors orders for new admits, pharmacy could not “see” doctor’s orders, new medication orders where not transferred to the computerized medication dispensing system. What was curious is that within the hospital, some patient care units were totally “unaffected”. We had 2 computers that worked, out of 14.
Same thing up here in Boston at the hospital I work at Aggiegirl. Absolute chaos. All scheduled procedures and surgeries cancelled-emergency cases only were to be done.

My son oversees the security of a software provided to pediatric offices around the world. Their system was hacked last year and a ransom had to be paid. Guess who they used to beef up security of the system? Crowdstrike. I told him they could be part of the reason for the hack.
