According to the New York Post, the assassin who tried to kill President Donald J Trump was Thomas Matthew Crooks, age 20 from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

Yep. Successful or not, he didn’t have an escape route from that roof that would let him live. He was too visible. Why? Did he just not think things through completely? Was he suicidal? Oswald had a chance to escape as part of his plan. It also appears that the shooter used a 22lr. The distance was a little too far for that round to be a dependable killer if he made a hit. It is common for lung shots to see blood forced out the nose and mouth from a wound that compromises the lungs.
The bulk of the blood on the area around him is clearly under his torso, not his head, and his shirt is blood soaked from a source that is not his head, his neck to his shirt collar is relatively blood free, all suggesting his torso took the damage.
Nothing suggests an oral bullet entry, note there is no exit wound on the back of his neck or skull . . .

As a retired combat Marine and then LEO, I have learned to take nearly everything people, especially civilians (even if they are YouTube rangers) with a saltlick block.
I have seen a number of people have their head “blown off” literally but a 5.56, 7.62 or even .300 WinMag just do not do that.
They make a mess for sure and that may be what prompts some over-excited folks to use “blown off” figuratively.
Most of the “reality” civilians and even non-ground combat military use as the basis for descriptions involving ballistics and such is from Hollywood and thus not realistic at all, and that includes the John Wick franchise, which is “better” but it is still in comparison to Hollywood violence in general.

The single-story buildings were close to the rally, and had clear sight lines from their roofs to the stage.
Common sense tells me that protection personnel would have been posted on these roofs, given their closeness and line of sight to the rally and stage.

There are a number of scenarios that are possible. What if he came to the area from the parking lot beside the building? TMZ has a picture of the ladder on the building hidden by what look to be a few evergreen trees. Even if the parking lot was closed a few hours prior to the event, I seriously doubt that law enforcement really cleared the area. He could’ve hid his rifle in place days before or even hid in his vehicle for a while beforehand.

IF you are a marksman or a regular shooter of that rifle, and this guy doesn’t look like a gun nerd, it is easy and even likely that you will miss or be off target by a few inches to a foot. Your observations are correct, but I think you missed his. Of all the possible outcomes, getting shot in the ear without any further damage is the least possible outcome by several levels of magnitude. It would either be a complete miss, or a kill shot 99.99997% of the time.

Right. I am no marksman in any sense of the word, but I took an AR straight out of the box, put in a mag loaded with FMJ rounds, went to the range, and with iron sights from sitting position with only elbow propped (no sandbag) cut a 2″ group at 100 yds.
That proves to me that the AR is quite accurate as you suggest – it was good ammo and I took my time, but all the same the accuracy was undeniable.
That totally depends on a first or second focal plane optic and parallax. My wife isn’t a “regular” shooter but, can hit a paper plate at 200 yrds with a 5.56 round with ffp optic. Magnification compensates for bullet drop. With a subsonic projectile, the wind, (under 10 mph), wont push the projectile 1″ in either direction.
My 8 yr old granddaughter can knock a squirrel out of a hickory at 100 yrds with her ffp vortex equipped Chipmunk .22
I taught her to aim at a quarter taped to a plate and she hits the plate, (if not quarter), everytime.

If the weapon is sighted in, as it probably was, at battle sight zero, typically 200-250 meters, elevation is a non factor. Windage might be if there is a strong wind.

He only missed killing President Trump by 1 or 2 inches at what, 125-150 yards? A bad round, a cold barrel, a knock to the scope while climbing to the roof, many factors could make this 1 to 2 inch difference even with a trained shooter. If you bench fired most rifles clamped to a vice with a cold barrel you would get a 1 to 2 inch difference at that range.
My opinion is that the shooter was trained by the deep state to shoot well enough to take out their opposition.
I also feel the shooter was allowed to shoot by the SS and cops that were there supposedly to protect President Trump. Of course the shooter was then killed so he could not be interrogated.
That is almost too obvious. It is apparent that the SS sniper on the roof behind the President was sighting on the shooter – he is looking and has his rifle aimed in that direction. So what the hell was he doing? and what was his spotter telling him?
Surely their optics revealed the shooter and/or a rifle barrel! It is virtually incredulous that they did not spot the assassin well before the latter fired – as quickly as the shooter was neutralized with a head shot the SS had to be trained on him prior.
Allowing that rooftop to be accessed by a armed individual cannot be written off as incompetence (though this is how the narrative will undoubtedly be played out in the press). This had to be permitted by SS, either by command or complicity. Neither are acceptable.

Teleprompter, as he was turned to the right to look at that big jumbotron, would have been forward and left of his position, and if struck and actually shattered, debris would have only hit the front of his face or the left side of his head, not the far side of his head and his right ear.

I run a tactical/defensive firearms school here in north Georgia for LEOs and vetted civilians.
We get most of our novice students with a decent centerfire rifle and scope hitting ping pong balls on a string at 300 meters in a day of training. It is just not that hard.
There are a number of things that just aren’t adding up even taking account of the reality that most early reports of major “incidents” like this are often inaccurate.
Although better video may clear it up, I closely watched the clip of the 2 “secret service snipers” clad in black on the roof of the “barn” behind Trump that the headline said showed them in the act of killing the sniper.
To me, it is inconclusive on that point and actually it looks like they are reacting to possible incoming fire rather than taking deliberate shots as neither appear to be on their triggers.
Also, given how easy a shot it would be at even twice the distance involved here, why the security perimeter was not big enough to include all buildings or other elevated platforms is beyond comprehension from my perspective as a retired Marine infantry officer and retired LEO/SWAT sniper.
I would say that “time will tell all” but given the feds’ proven track record of incompetence, criminal actions, deceit, false flags and partisan/ideological bias, I have no such confidence.
Did the perp take his own life? That has not been discussed yet.
I agree with all of that. At some point I will be weighing in on it but I need more data and video. It sure as hell looked like that SS agent with the sniper rifle was looking over his scope and jumped as the first rounds came in, but had already seen the assassin through his glass and not fired. Many questions need to be asked of everyone involved in perimeter\exterior security.
My preference for targets between 400 and 600 are the cheap tubes of tennis balls. If you get real good (and lucky) you can hit them when they come back from orbit.

I’ve a deep disapproval for exmil training LE/Govt in “tactical” or “defensive” firearm use. The cops and the govt are the forces that’ll disarm Americans. Training them in even the basics of both eyes open, let alone how to pie a room, traverse a hallway, or use NODS is training them in the arts of war for use against CITIZENS, not ENEMIES.
LE and govt are NOT war fighters. They’re PEACE OFFICERS supposed to operate within confines of the US Constitution, where all suspects have rights. War fighters aren’t constrained by constitutional rights of citizens. They’re trained to locate, close with, and kill the enemy; not locate and arrest a citizen without violating that citizen’s rights.
THAT’S TWO VERY DIFFERENT PATHOLOGIES!
When exmil trains LE/govt, they’re instilling a warrior pathos that’ll never be erased, and which always overrides their responsibility to operate within the confines of the Constitution and the suspect’s rights. Exmil, by their simply being exmil, instills the spirit of escalation into peace officers. It happens EVERY TIME. More so when high speed exmil is doing the training.
LE just can’t help thinking they’re super soldiers in the “war on crime” because they can shoot weak side with both eyes open while pie-ing a room. This feeds their egos and their ability to confiscate guns when that time comes.
When exmil trains LE in the arts of war, the art of the carbine and rifle, they aid and abet the Communist takeover of America by desensitizing the cops to the concept of Constitutional rights, including 1, 2, 4, 14 and others.
No matter what their motive, no matter how pure, exmil training LE is a disservice to The People, who are the REAL owners of America.

Everything I’ve heard about Kevlar vests is they work by dissipating the force of the incoming bullet enough to stop it breaking the skin. It all depends on incoming velocity, size, etc. and even then, the wearer still feels the impact. The energy is just spread out. It’s still better than nothing.

I, too, am an avid shooter for 50 years. I was the sniper on the SWAT for a Texas county Sheriffs Dept. back in the 80’s. As far as “difficulty”, that was practically a freebie.
The pic showing the perp looked as though he was using a red dot. It’s hard to tell blowing the pic up.
Whether the shooter was a blind old hound dog who accidentally stepped on a trigger, or some high-speed-low-drag trained marksman or anything in between, President Trump seems to have taken one in the chest (ballistic vest) and if he hadn’t have turned (twitched) his head down and to the side at that instant, he would have taken that bullet right in the ear hole.
