The USSS does not need permission. Once an armed threat is spotted, they are to take down that threat. The two men in black with the word POLICE on their backs OBSERVED the shooter get in place and ready to fire.

A .223 or 5.56 from a rifle with a 16 inch barrel goes about 3000 feet/second. The flight time should have been about half of the 0.34 seconds, or 0.16 give or take. A head shot would be foolish to take at 150 yards — the head is moving around which is likely why the assassin missed. Had the shooter gone for a center of mass shot, that would have likely been stopped by body armor. Despite the relatively difficult shot attempted, the assassin put five rounds around the target. President Trump is lucky to be alive.
I think AJones may be on to something. The IC may be going for broke after this. Possibilities include but may not be limited to a successful assassination of the current POTUS blamed on MAGA, a large and coordinated set of domestic terror attacks, Taiwain being invaded or even thermonuclear war with Russia. With off the shelf ammo the best can be done at that distance is about the size of a pie plate. AR15 are notoriously loose where the barrel snaps down that getting better accuracy requires modifications along with finely tuned ammo. Sure hunters take that shot often but I run across their misses in bone piles.
ARs are very accurate and are not as loose as you proffer unless they are extremely poor quality or heavily used and not maintained.
If thru were as bad as you describe, no one could hit pop targets of small Silhouettes at 250-300 m without scopes, yet all day, everyday, hundreds if not thousands of Marines and Soldiers do it on ranges all over the world.
Without a scope, several here on this site shot sharpshooter or expert in the military, and hitting a pie sized target at 100-150m was doable all day without a scope. Silhouette size – up to 300 meters. And that’s not even counting ex snipers, special ops nor former LEO swat training.
With a scope, even less, and a head is larger than a personal table plate.
You are correct regarding the inherent accuracy of the AR platform; from a “supported” position (like that little turd’s position) I can put five shots in a half-dollar coin at that distance with my 14 yr old Daniel Defence, and that’s with a non-magnified optic. And that’s with 67 yr old eyes
The AR is one of the easiest platforms to accurize. Float a good barrel, that’s it. The upper-lower fit has very little to do with how accurate the rifle shoots.
With low grade 556 you are talking 2 MOA at 100m and 4MOA at 200m
150 yds, taking a moving head shot, adrenaline, steel roof that was no doubt cooking eggs hot and the gravity of the situation is the most likely reason.

This article is VERY vague as to the identity of the supposed local police officer, which always makes me suspect, that if the story is true, the officer was a female who panicked and retreated back down the ladder, rather than neutralize the threat.

FTA: I have a serious question. It appears that the Secret Service was NOT only absent from the press conference but, from the photos I have seen, that the Pennsylvania police took down the assassin—not the Secret Service. This is the biggest security failure in the Secret Service’s entire history. The roof on which the assassin was located was less than 150 meters (yards) from where Trump was speaking. That is a distance from which a decent marksman could reasonably hit a human-sized target.
Let’s be very clear here. That distance of 150 meters is a distance at which U.S. Army recruits MUST hit a scaled human-sized silhouette to qualify with the M16 assault rifle in basic training. The AR-15 is a semi-automatic civilian version of the military M16. This could have been an easy shot, but it looks like people sadly also got in the way. This 20-year-old kid was not a marksman – a pro could have taken Trump out with one shot at that distance.
It is very suspicious that the Secret Service didn’t have anybody at a late-night news conference where FBI and Pennsylvania State Police officials briefed reporters on the shooting investigation. FBI Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek said it was “surprising” that the gunman was able to fire at the stage before he was killed. How was this possible According to two law enforcement officials, members of the Secret Service’s counter-sniper team and counter-assault team were THERE. They never responded!

Sundance your math is off… Assuming Crooks’ rifle was a typical AR-15 with 16″ barrel firing 5.56 factory ammo at a velocity of 2750 fps, the bullet would reach 150 yards in .164 seconds. A close call by any measure.
The velocity decreases over Time of Flight (TOF) due to drag. You need to integrate the velocity over the TOF to get the distance vs time equation. If TOF were a linear function of time (hint: It’s not) you could use the average velocity. The velocity vs time equation is probably linear enough for this TOF where that would work. At any rate, the time is going to be longer than what muzzle velocity and distance alone would dictate.
So checking ballistic charts, I find the average velocity over 150 yards to be 2833 fps, or a TOF of ~160 ms (I’m an engineer, deal with it 😉 ). Perhaps Sundance was adding in shooter reaction time after seeing desired target profile, on target, and firing. This is the time you really want, from sight picture to impact.

There’s some long subthreads here about the police snipers holding fire after spotting the perp, “allowing” him to take the shot(s) at President Trump. We need to inject some reality here before we all cycle up:
1) Though the Democrat’s behavior makes us cynical, i.e. calls for violence, demonization of their opponents, using both lawfare and outright sworn law enforcement to persecute their political enemies, we all need to take Dan Bongino’s words of caution to heart. We don’t yet know the facts, period. It’s too early. What seems “obvious” ain’t necessarily so.
2) If the snipers had the perp in their sights, they would not and COULD NOT be authorized to shoot unless they actually saw a weapon. A dude on a roof could have been legitimate, i.e. a Trump supporter up there for a better view. In other words, there are reasonable, possible explanations. (Do these include the sniper waiting for a second burst of fire before he acted? Did they have glass on the perp when he began shooting? Yep, serious inquiries are required, but then again, incompetence may explain a mysterious “conspiracy”.)
3) The failure certainly occurred by the site survey and planning team. The onsite Secret Service commander is also at fault, as he should have conducted his own survey when he first arrived on site, and seeing unprotected rooftops, put a halt to proceedings until the area WAS secure. Beyond that, we just don’t know. Was Trump denied an adequate “full OSS protection package” as Bongino alluded to in his broadcast? Was this a setup, i.e. an assassination conspiracy, in which others encouraged and prepped the perp with the weapon, surveyed the exact shooting location, and even the means for even climbing the roof? What were the dead perps connections and associations going as far back as grade school. THESE are the questions a competent investigation should cover.
4) Neither the DHS/Secret Service, FBI, nor any other Federal government agency can lead this investigation. PERIOD. The Federal powers that be can talk about “staying in your lane”, but very simply put, they were involved in the failed protection process, and they have absolutely LOST all credibility with the majority of the American people. The FBI has as an organization, behaved as partisan, violent thugs. An independent investigator must be appointed in charge, with the Federal agencies assigning staff in support. There are multiple US Sheriff’s with the credibility and competence who could do the job, and provide the accounting. I don’t know how to compel the Democrats in power to do this, but the GOP must pull out all stops, shut down everything, until it happens.
Final disclaimer. I’m nobody from nowhere, doing nothing, have done nothing much in my life, and I’m not particularly smart, either. So, take my comments with a grain of salt.

I believe this was planned in some chat room with the gayful assistance of the 3 letter agencies. However, the Heavenly agency won again.

The sniper would have to positively ID the target, AND determine that he was a threat. I’m guessing that the rifle wasn’t immediately visible, e.g. maybe laying against the roof at his side, while the used field glasses to search for his target (just speculating). If the sniper didn’t see the rifle, he could keep his scope on him, but he wouldn’t be authorized to fire. The video of the two SWAT snippers shows one on his glass, pop his head back just before the perp fired the first shot. That tells me that he had either been looking for the perp, or saw him, and maybe the perp’s head was down. Without a spotter next to him (which was pretty unusual, IMHO), he reacted when the perp popped his head up (i.e. maybe he’d been looking over the top, sighting his target, then moved 10′ to his right or left to get a better shot) by moving off his glass to look for his target, then hit the glass and reacquired the target a moment later. I’m pretty certain that had the snipers had the perps in scope with a gun, they’d have fired. Seeing a head looking over the top of the roof, wouldn’t have been enough to fire.
These are legitimate questions, lines for investigation. Again, TWO snipers, i.e. shooters with no spotter was unusual IMHO. A rifle scope view can be pretty limited. A spotter’s scope is a much wider view. However, folks assuming that there was a USSS policy of shooting only after shots ring out, is almost certainly off-base. Things should not be attributed to conspiracy, when they can be completely, better explained by incompetence. As I posted above, the primary incompetence occurred hours, even days before the event, and the day of the event, but the SS agent in charge.
Ignore them, they’re literally in the trash-bin of history. Their opinion no longer matters as they are so far gone, the only way to deal with them is to ignore them.

When I was in DC to watch the President My eyes were constantly scanning my ears were listening. He is more important then what he is saying.
Absolutely I would attend. The only problem, President Trump doesn’t rally in the Pacific Northwest and I’m not traveling much farther than Idaho. Pendleton Oregon would be a great location. Every year there’s a huge rodeo held there and so there’s a facility for a rally. There are lots of patriotic people in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Nevada and Northern California.
I’m up in age…but, if I could make it to a rally, yes, I would go, but I would like to be sitting in the front row facing him. It would be better if a younger person. – like the man in the white shirt in the video – were sitting behind him and had better eyes than mine to scan the crowd like he did. Kudos to him. I’ve watched him specifically many times now. A valiant warrior assisting from the rear.

A head shot would be foolish to take at 150 yards — the head is moving around which is likely why the assassin missed. Had the shooter gone for a center of mass shot, that would have likely been stopped by body armor. Despite the relatively difficult shot attempted, the assassin put five rounds around the target. President Trump is lucky to be alive.

With off the shelf ammo the best can be done at that distance is about the size of a pie plate. AR15 are notoriously loose where the barrel snaps down that getting better accuracy requires modifications along with finely tuned ammo. Sure hunters take that shot often but I run across their misses in bone piles.
ARs are very accurate and are not as loose as you proffer unless they are extremely poor quality or heavily used and not maintained.
If thru were as bad as you describe, no one could hit pop targets of small Silhouettes at 250-300 m without scopes, yet all day, everyday, hundreds if not thousands of Marines and Soldiers do it on ranges all over the world.
Without a scope, several here on this site shot sharpshooter or expert in the military, and hitting a pie sized target at 100-150m was doable all day without a scope. Silhouette size – up to 300 meters. And that’s not even counting ex snipers, special ops nor former LEO swat training.
With a scope, even less, and a head is larger than a personal table plate.
You are correct regarding the inherent accuracy of the AR platform; from a “supported” position (like that little turd’s position) I can put five shots in a half-dollar coin at that distance with my 14 yr old Daniel Defence, and that’s with a non-magnified optic. And that’s with 67 yr old eyes

The AR is one of the easiest platforms to accurize. Float a good barrel, that’s it. The upper-lower fit has very little to do with how accurate the rifle shoots.

This article is VERY vague as to the identity of the supposed local police officer, which always makes me suspect, that if the story is true, the officer was a female who panicked and retreated back down the ladder, rather than neutralize the threat.

Sundance your math is off… Assuming Crooks’ rifle was a typical AR-15 with 16″ barrel firing 5.56 factory ammo at a velocity of 2750 fps, the bullet would reach 150 yards in .164 seconds. A close call by any measure.
The velocity decreases over Time of Flight (TOF) due to drag. You need to integrate the velocity over the TOF to get the distance vs time equation. If TOF were a linear function of time (hint: It’s not) you could use the average velocity. The velocity vs time equation is probably linear enough for this TOF where that would work. At any rate, the time is going to be longer than what muzzle velocity and distance alone would dictate.
So checking ballistic charts, I find the average velocity over 150 yards to be 2833 fps, or a TOF of ~160 ms (I’m an engineer, deal with it 😉 ). Perhaps Sundance was adding in shooter reaction time after seeing desired target profile, on target, and firing. This is the time you really want, from sight picture to impact.

There’s some long subthreads here about the police snipers holding fire after spotting the perp, “allowing” him to take the shot(s) at President Trump. We need to inject some reality here before we all cycle up:
1) Though the Democrat’s behavior makes us cynical, i.e. calls for violence, demonization of their opponents, using both lawfare and outright sworn law enforcement to persecute their political enemies, we all need to take Dan Bongino’s words of caution to heart. We don’t yet know the facts, period. It’s too early. What seems “obvious” ain’t necessarily so.
2) If the snipers had the perp in their sights, they would not and COULD NOT be authorized to shoot unless they actually saw a weapon. A dude on a roof could have been legitimate, i.e. a Trump supporter up there for a better view. In other words, there are reasonable, possible explanations. (Do these include the sniper waiting for a second burst of fire before he acted? Did they have glass on the perp when he began shooting? Yep, serious inquiries are required, but then again, incompetence may explain a mysterious “conspiracy”.)
3) The failure certainly occurred by the site survey and planning team. The onsite Secret Service commander is also at fault, as he should have conducted his own survey when he first arrived on site, and seeing unprotected rooftops, put a halt to proceedings until the area WAS secure. Beyond that, we just don’t know. Was Trump denied an adequate “full OSS protection package” as Bongino alluded to in his broadcast? Was this a setup, i.e. an assassination conspiracy, in which others encouraged and prepped the perp with the weapon, surveyed the exact shooting location, and even the means for even climbing the roof? What were the dead perps connections and associations going as far back as grade school. THESE are the questions a competent investigation should cover.
4) Neither the DHS/Secret Service, FBI, nor any other Federal government agency can lead this investigation. PERIOD. The Federal powers that be can talk about “staying in your lane”, but very simply put, they were involved in the failed protection process, and they have absolutely LOST all credibility with the majority of the American people. The FBI has as an organization, behaved as partisan, violent thugs. An independent investigator must be appointed in charge, with the Federal agencies assigning staff in support. There are multiple US Sheriff’s with the credibility and competence who could do the job, and provide the accounting. I don’t know how to compel the Democrats in power to do this, but the GOP must pull out all stops, shut down everything, until it happens.
Final disclaimer. I’m nobody from nowhere, doing nothing, have done nothing much in my life, and I’m not particularly smart, either. So, take my comments with a grain of salt.

The sniper would have to positively ID the target, AND determine that he was a threat. I’m guessing that the rifle wasn’t immediately visible, e.g. maybe laying against the roof at his side, while the used field glasses to search for his target (just speculating). If the sniper didn’t see the rifle, he could keep his scope on him, but he wouldn’t be authorized to fire. The video of the two SWAT snippers shows one on his glass, pop his head back just before the perp fired the first shot. That tells me that he had either been looking for the perp, or saw him, and maybe the perp’s head was down. Without a spotter next to him (which was pretty unusual, IMHO), he reacted when the perp popped his head up (i.e. maybe he’d been looking over the top, sighting his target, then moved 10′ to his right or left to get a better shot) by moving off his glass to look for his target, then hit the glass and reacquired the target a moment later. I’m pretty certain that had the snipers had the perps in scope with a gun, they’d have fired. Seeing a head looking over the top of the roof, wouldn’t have been enough to fire.
These are legitimate questions, lines for investigation. Again, TWO snipers, i.e. shooters with no spotter was unusual IMHO. A rifle scope view can be pretty limited. A spotter’s scope is a much wider view. However, folks assuming that there was a USSS policy of shooting only after shots ring out, is almost certainly off-base. Things should not be attributed to conspiracy, when they can be completely, better explained by incompetence. As I posted above, the primary incompetence occurred hours, even days before the event, and the day of the event, but the SS agent in charge.

Absolutely I would attend. The only problem, President Trump doesn’t rally in the Pacific Northwest and I’m not traveling much farther than Idaho. Pendleton Oregon would be a great location. Every year there’s a huge rodeo held there and so there’s a facility for a rally. There are lots of patriotic people in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Nevada and Northern California.
