Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

So I’ve been watching the great 1956 movie, The Ten Commandments. I want to ask people more Biblically literate than me a question that has been bothering me for a long time: What is the correct teaching regarding the Third Commandment? “Thou shalt not take the Lord’s name in vain”. How I was always taught was it means to use the Lord’s name to commit evil, but I keep hearing that it really means to use the Lord’s name in exasperations and curses with the addition that such utterances will mean the Lord and Christ will never EVER forgive you no matter what. Can Treepers much wiser than me answer this?
Don’t know about wiser but I’ll venture a Biblical answer.
It’s all about salvation, whether one goes to Heaven (saved, forgiven) or Hell (lost, unforgiven) when he dies.
The Ten Commandments are part of the Old Covenant, the Law of Moses, which God commanded to be kept only by Jews, “My people Israel.”
In New Covenant times (begun on the day of Pentecost) Jews are still required to keep the Law of Moses.
But it’s impossible! So God sent their Messiah Jesus to fulfill the Law and pay for their sins so they could come into the New Covenant by faith in Him.
Those Jews who do this are forgiven and saved; those who don’t are unforgiven and lost.
Gentiles “apart from law,” were never commanded to keep the Law of Moses, and none of it applies to them. It doesn’t matter anyway because no one is saved by keeping the Law (again it’s all about salvation).
Gentiles are lost unless they receive Christ by faith as their personal Lord and Savior.
Those Gentiles who do are forgiven and saved; those who don’t are unforgiven and lost.
Finally once a sinner, Jew or Gentile, is saved he is given a new heart, desires to be obedient to God in all things, for he is now a “new creation” in Christ. A Christian!
All things change from that point on.
Look up this verse in any modern era Bible to see the present state of every Christian in God’s eyes.
Romans 8:1.
Hope this helped.
“Gentiles are lost unless they receive Christ by faith as their personal Lord and Savior. “
This is correct. And the way to receive him is not just a simple prayer as some might say.
To receive him you have to first, repent of all of your sins, be baptized in Jesus Name as was commanded in scripture and then receive the Spirit of Christ.
Acts 2:38-39
I believe this may clarify and hopefully scratch your itch. https://www.hebrew4christians.com/Scripture/Torah/Ten_Cmds/Third_Cmd/third_cmd.html – Then perhaps this may clarify some earlier posted thoughts, probably common to all of us at some time. Kudzu On You, perhaps you’ll find some. I also hope WP (reply to Iowan227) understands the Jewish position a little more.
And as the Allied Forces consolidated their gains later on D-Day, behind the survivors lay those who died to enslave the world, and, those who died to free it.
