Most of the US Navy Pacific Fleet (7thFLT) is based out of Japan 1400miles (or 2.5 days sailing at 20kts) away, or Hawaii 5100miles away or the US West Coast 6000-7000 miles away. Other than some Marines and Air Force in Okinawa (460 miles away) and whatever can be flown in (only possible if the can successfully conduct multiple in-flight refuelings each way) US military assets are a long ways away and will need days if not weeks to get to Taiwan. China knows all this and has long been planning ways to disrupt US reinforcement and make it so costly the US will shy away.

I think those who believe Xi is waiting until 2027 or later are mistaken. He won’t do it before our election, as he knows such an action would likely put Trump in office. He is far more likely to invade immediately after the election, regardless of who wins. He knows that Biden will do nothing and if Biden wins it will be a fait accompli. He hopes it will be a fait accompli if Trump wins, but he is mistaken. It will take longer than two months to take Taiwan, and the Taiwanese know that Trump will support them and not let them fall.
If Trump stood with Taiwan, he would cost himself much support. The base doesn’t want war with China.
Biden has allowed a Chinese base in Cuba. It is now very large and who knows what kind of weapons have been installed. China already knows if they will allow Trump to win. We do not have the manpower or equipment to stop China from taking Taiwan. We can’t beat Russia in the Ukraine. The only question is will Taiwan and its chips be turned into rubble.

Taiwan belonged to China, the Japanese took it. Many on Taiwan want reunification.
The complication is that the Japanese seized Taiwan from Qing Dynasty China in 1895, which was replaced by the Republic of China in 1912, which in turn was replaced by the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
Taiwanese citizens need to figure out if they accept the PRC as the legitimate successor to the Qing Dynasty. Given that complication I think a Hong Kong like resolution is possible, but so is the one currently being worked out in eastern Ukraine.
You left out the Beiyang Government. The Nationalists (KMT) were not even marginally in charge until after the Northern Expedition of 1927. A highly unstable situation.

Officially, the US actually adheres to the ‘One China Policy’. Additionally, approximately 50% of Taiwanese WANT to be affiliated with China, as seen in one of their major political parties. China is the largest trading partner with Taiwan. Frankly, perhaps it’s time to call an end to political interventions in other countries, where it’s basically none of our business.
The Washington cartel actively seeks an independent Taiwan, because they see a unified China as a threat to their monopoly over global affairs. And that’s only the first phase of their plan. Once Taiwan is independent, they will move on to breaking away Hong Kong and Macau, and after that to breaking away chunks of the Mainland itself.
China is well aware of this, and that is why it is preparing for war.

China is very EFFECTIVELY (for a change) embargoed from getting the nearly scifi DUTCH SOLE SOURCE equipment that allows Taiwan to produce 90% of the world’s most advanced integrated circuit “chips,” and yet their economy is the most dependent upon them. Even the technologies required to just MANUFACTURE those machines themselves is scifi-level stuff.
THAT is what they’re after in Taiwan FAR more than “reunification.”
The US Army War College paper from 2021 suggests the Taiwanese should commit to blowing up the facilities if the PLA invades and doesn’t mention the US doing it, but it would be absolutely trivial for US to do it with waves of submarine launched cruise missiles if they don’t. The vast facilities need to be 1,000 times cleaner than an operating room:
“In an operating room, they allow 10,000 particles of air pollution for one cubic meter of air. In a room where a semiconductor is built, they only allow 10 for every cubic meter.”
This is the PERFECT way to deter China from invading Taiwan – simply say we’ll blow up what they’re actually after and I’m glad to see it stated more publicly now. I’ve even seen a US Congressman say that in an interview.

Taiwan’s defense minister in statements early this week pushed back against the idea of the US bombing the island’s semiconductor factories in the event of a Chinese invasion.
Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) recently said the US should “make it very clear to the Chinese that if you invade Taiwan, we’re going to blow up TSMC,” referring to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which produces the majority of the world’s advanced semiconductors.
When asked about Moutlon’s comments, Taiwanese Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng said the military wouldn’t let that happen.
“It is the military’s obligation to defend Taiwan and we will not tolerate any others blowing up our facilities,” he said, according to The South China Morning Post.
The idea of bombing Taiwan’s chip factories to avoid them coming under Chinese control is gaining popularity in Washington.
A paper published in 2021 by the US Army War College suggested the US and Taiwan should plan “scorched-earth” tactics that could render Taiwan “not just unattractive if ever seized by force, but positively costly to maintain.”
The paper said the tactic could be done “most effectively by threatening to destroy facilities belonging to the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the most important chipmaker in the world and China’s most important supplier.”
