I have long felt that life is like a series of links in a chain. You might be driving down the road and you hear a song on the radio, or see a picture, and you feel a memory….
Something triggers within you that reminds of a different time and place than where you are right now. You reflect and discover the attached memories, perhaps a totally different time in your life.
Perhaps you lived in a different place. Perhaps you were surrounded by different people. Perhaps a different job or completely different friends. You recognize those memories were constructed like frozen moments in time. They became individual links in the chain in your life. That song on the radio takes you back to that link.
We never actually realize, in the immediate moment, when one link closes and another link begin. But when we look back, we can clearly see distinct points where things changed, the link closed, and a new link began. You see, the links are only visible in reflection.
No singer, songwriter or musician is as deeply embedded in the links of my life, as Jimmy Buffett. This one hurts.

The historic Sanibel Lighthouse survived Hurricane Ian, albeit with damage last year.
The lightkeepers house was totally destroyed as were all the buildings around the Southern tip of the Island, but the Lighthouse remained standing. There’s a metaphor and a message in that outcome.
Since 1884, every twelve seconds the Sanibel lighthouse beacon blinked twice, creating a sequence of four navigational alerts per minute.
Ask me how I know that, and I will show you the clock of my childhood.
I learned how to read a sextant on the front porch of the Lightkeepers house.
I traded Mr. Brennan 4 fresh trout from Dixie Beach flats for the lessons, there were two (one day and one night), on using a sextant. From that moment at the age of around ten, I was known as “Trout” when I came back. It wasn’t funny.
Long before there was a ‘city glow’ on the eastern shore, the Sanibel beacon remained my waypoint in life. Twelve seconds, blink twice, four per minute. I spent tens of thousands of minutes with the comforting beacon at my six. I was always safe when I could see it and I never strayed beyond its reach.
My first bull shark took me for an almost 1,000 blink-long tour of the back bay inlet during a particularly memorable night.
I also ‘caught‘ my first Silver King within reach of the beacon at sunrise. Recording the moment by removing (then laminating) the trophy scale which to this day sits in an old cigar box filled with buttons, wire, ribbons, weird metal bits and mysterious childhood treasures.
That particular morning was exceptionally memorable because I proclaimed myself a ‘king fisher.’ Unfortunately, it was a short-lived moment of ego quickly deflated by an unusually furious mom – because I was going to be late for middle school. “King Fisher” shouts I, dashing out the door, while hearing “fisher fool” chasing my ear from behind.
Yup, Jimmy Buffett is attached to more of my memories than any other artist.
… always will be.

My favorite!
RIP, Jimmy, a pirate beyond compare. So surprised when I heard the news early this morning.
Margaritaville was one of those rare songs that didn’t have to grow on you…it was you.
InstantClassic the first time one heard it.
He always said he wrote it in 6 minutes to fill a spot on his album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes.
Definitely an instant classic!
A couple of months ago I actually blew out one of my Margaritaville flip flops while drinking a Margarita. Think I’ll hoist a few tonight.
“Watch for those ‘pop tops!”
I think this was the song he said he wrote while stuck in traffic on the seven mile bridge.
Interesting. I’ve been stuck on that bridge too (the old one), made the trip many times as a kid.
Glad they preserved some of it when they built the new one. Family moved from FL before the new one was built but I’ve been over the new one once, RT Miami – Key West.
I recall another swing bridge, think it was in Ft. Lauderdale. Don’t think there were very many
swing bridges, most were drawbridges. Lot of time spent stuck at one bridge or another. Should have been using that time to try to write songs!
A pirate indeed. Born 200 years too late. His canons with always thunder.
God bless this man who gave us all so much.
This son of a sailor says cheers from the Buzzards Bay area.
My husband of 31 years really got me hooked on Jimmy Buffett, he also got all of our kids hooked. My husband passed away June 1,2023. I was particularly melancholy yesterday as it had been three whole months.
We would always listen to Jimmy on our 7 hour trips to the beach.
Yes, this one hurts!
My condolences.
Thank you! I’ve been listening to Jimmy since I read this article.
I still have my husband’s Jimmy cassettes and albums. I’m sure there are some 8 tracks around here somewhere.
Try this one, T. It’ll make you smile!
It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere https://g.co/kgs/ngTWWK
So sorry, T. Hope you find comfort listening to Jimmy’s music and remembering happy times.
Thank you Lanna!
So sorry, Sundance.
Wonderful life story. RIP JB
I’m planning a margarita dinner, with a cheeseburger. And, I’m wearing my flip flops in honor of Jimmy.
His concerts/ music ALWAYS brought me peace love and joy.
RIP
Great artist…remember walking into bars in the 70’s and Come Monday was blaring…
Re your flips…Don’t step on a pop top….
I will do with the smell of shrimp beginning to boil.
“There’s booze in the blender!”
“And soon it will render ……..that frozen concoction…….that helps us hang on
:Shake a salt
RIP in peace brother Jimmy
What’s the content of leather on those shoes, Sundance. Soles on the prairies was my ‘beat’. Thanks for this.
A Buffet concert was always sure to be fun. I recall a couple at one lawn festival really getting the lyrics of “why dont we get drunk”. This high schooler was astounded at the entire scene. Though, there were no fights, just revelers, and fantastic music. It was something to witness Margaritaville with 10,000 really happy people singing along. This man made so many happy. RIP
Thank you for the moving childhood tribute.
Indeed.
Headin’ up to Heaven for the Labor Day weekend.
RIP J.B. It’s 5:00 o’clock everywhere…..
Cheers ! RIP, MUCH LOVE
It’s always 5 O’clock in my fifth wheel & most times in my home. Who da thunk this guy affected so many Americans just wanting a vacation from the stresses of life?
Incredibly well lived life to bring so much joy and connections to so many people through song.
Thank you, Jimmy Buffet , for sharing your gift.
Tipping the tin cup to you SD: well stated as ever. Thank you.
Deepest condolences Sundance and your loved ones.
May Jimmy’s soul rest in the loving arms of our Eternal Father in Heaven.
Amen.
Damn shame.
Migration” is my favorite, and I stepped on a pop top at the beach the year “Margaritaville came out, but today I think of this from “The Captain and the Kid”:
“He’s somewhere on the ocean now
A place he outta be
With one hand on the starboard rail
He’s wavin’ back at me”.
And from “He Went To Paris”:
“Now he lives in the islands, fishes the pilin’s
And drinks his green label each day
He’s writing his memoirs and losing his hearing
But he don’t care what most people say
Through 86 years of perpetual motion
If he likes you he’ll smile then he’ll say
Jimmy, some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic
But I had a good life all the way”
American Poet Laureate imho
Buffett supported Hillary, hated Trump.

sadly, jb also required his fans show proof of jab to attend his events
Sorry, not much of a fan cause of junk like this.

Sometimes the relationships we have with people, art, and music transcend partisan politics.
This.
No body’s perfect.
I grew up in the ’50’s.
We had friends and family that we loved and respected, regardless of politics. In fact, I can’t tell you for sure the “politics” of anyone I knew back then.
“The content of their character” mattered.
It’s a shame if we feel we cannot respect or appreciate the qualities of someone who is not 100% aligned with us.
yep, and here we are…
nothing personal, but suffering totalitarian lockdowns and coerced and deadly experimental medical mandates is evvil and inexcusable
robbing our most precious resource, our children, of joy by maliciously and purposefully pumping them full of fear and apprehension
i can muster no respect or appreciation for such people, regardless of their ability to ‘carry a note’, i can only muster contempt
lo siento, no lo siento
ill stop now before i really get started
Sadly, his vaccine stance could have led to his own demise. Pure conjecture, I know, but so many vaccinated people I know are dying now of turbo cancers and heart attacks.
I wish I knew of even one celebrity whose survivors had a ‘public’ epiphany about the vax, to sound the alarm for others. But I don’t think that many vaxxers make the connection between the vax and dying suddenly.
You know, I have many wonderful friends who are traditional democrats. They are better friends to me than most of my “conservative” friends. Most of my friends got the vaccine. Even the Trump voting ones. I can’t hate everyone.
Many people, many good people have fallen victim to Satan’s Lies.
I am going to appreciate Jimmy Buffett for the joy that he brought many people through his music. The rest of it will be sorted out by God.
I cannot hate everyone who doesn’t pass the purity test.
Well said.
Now is not a time for Politics Please !!!
Whenever I rolled into Florida I always put his music on. 8 speakers blasting, twin turbos spooling up,rolling down I95 in the wee hours of the morning and if I was lucky there would be a full moon.
The biggest, brightest moon I ever saw was while driving on the overseas highway towards Key West. That gigantic moon dropped over the horizon so fast that, when my friend started talking about ‘flat earther’ theories, I almost believed it!
He died on this holiday weekend which I will always remember and raise a margarita glass to thank him for the many wonderful, relaxing days spent on a beach listening to his music.
We have much in common Sundance…This one really hurts…
This is a great video of Jimmy Buffet explaining how he and future wife filmed the music video “Come Monday”
Beautiful song.
My favorite. Takes me back to my college days, driving to New Haven to see a long-forgotten girlfriend.
I watch that video a couple years back. Funny that that was his first boat. I’ve seen some of the boats he’s had since. Different ball game. I saw him play at University of Florida when I was a teenager. We snuck into the show by climbing up three stories of a brick wall and prying some plywood that turned out to be covering a bathroom window at the gym. Looking back, I’m glad we made the effort as I never saw him play again.
What a great memory to have.
Sounds like a great childhood, Sundance !
My favorite shoes also
Jimmy Buffett has been such a part of my life for 52 years, I will sorely miss him
RIP my friend
Sad.
I just spent my first real vacation in 6 years 3 weeks ago.
Where did I go? Key West
Primary weigh station? The Green PARROT 🦜
Damn it! What an icon.
His shoes, lol I feel ya. Great song.
Recently my neighbor witnessed me walking down my gravel driveway barefoot. He asked how on earth I could do that. Not understanding at first, do what? Walk on that gravel like you have shoes on….
Oh…lots of practice I guess. I never thought about it before that. I sure miss drifting north in the current starting from Riviera Beach, motoring south to Delray then drift until your only concern is the fuel you have may not be enough to get all the way back home. Wonderful times that I haven’t thought about in years. Thank you.
Only difference is that Jimmy supported the liberal left, hope God understands, like Sundance, enjoy his music.
R.I.P. Jimmy
May he rest in peace.
He left us enough music and memories to last a lifetime.
Truly a classic, no one else like him. His deep connection to emotion made people slow down and ponder what’s really important. At least he did that for me. I always appreciated that he did Five O’Clock Somewhere with Alan Jackson. RIP Jimmy Buffett
I agree Sundance. Not even being a parrothead, I still felt a huge sense of SADNESS, GRIEF & LOSS. RIP Mr. Buffett. You was outstanding.
Oh, Sundance. I loved Jimmy Buffett too – and if you’re hurting, we all hurt with you. You’re a member of our posse.
Sundance, you are a gifted writer and have lived quite the life! You are blessed.
Thanks for stirring up my lacrimal glands. They needed a good cleaning out
Word!
.
You just know a team of dolphins are carrying this Jolly Mon home.
Used to go on vacations with friends. One was a businessman who through business travel racked up Hilton hotel points.
Went to Key West several times, and with two or three guys in each room the bathroom would have a waiting time.
I always used the men’s room on the first floor of the Key West Hilton, back side of the island, because they piped in Jimmy Buffet music 24/7. The other guys didn’t know what they were missing.
Rest In Peace ☮️ Jimmy Buffet…
Sundance, your highlights in life
reminded me too of another one:
…”Where there are lots of those friendly people,
Showing me where to go….
And I never want to loose their inspirations”….
Love the shoes…
My shoes too SD in FL and SD.
Important to separate his music and its impact on so many from his political beliefs as a President Trump hater and Andrew Gillum/Obama/Hillary lover.
Oh no, I did not know this. I can no longer stand to listen to Willie Nelson since he “went on the road again” with Beto to last governor election in Texas in his attempt to turn Texas blue and thus help destroy America. I can’t stand Garth Brooks either. What the hect is wrong with these America hater – and many are, like Buffet, quite wealth from America.
Well Buffet didn’t keep his politics separate from his music. He was very upfront about it, and supported politicians that hated the deplorables and the people on this website. Like most in the entertainment industry, it’s Socialism for thee, but not for me.
Turd meet punchbowl.
Jeez…
“Through 86 years of perpetual motion
If he likes you he’ll smile then he’ll say
Jimmy, some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic
But I had a good life all the way.”
RIP, Jimmy.
I remember the 2 day long beach blasts in the SC and Ga summers, where you brought your own cooler and tent to a big field or pasture that had a stage that looked like it sprung up from the forest. Bands would play off and on, round the clock and, there were sprinklers here and there to keep anyone falling out from the heat. I learned, (still remember), the words to every Jimmy Buffett hit, (and Swinging Medallions), At beach blasts. I woke up one morning at a blast in Edgefield, next to the smoldering remnants of a bonfire in the middle of the field, (where I had apparently and involuntarily fell down the night before), with a band was on stage singing “Changes in Latitudes” and a empty bottle of Wild Turkey 101 in my hand……man those were good times. I hadn’t thought of that in years,
Thank you Sundance!!!!
Remember that gigantic place called “The Pavilion” at Myrtle Beach? It was Amazing. It was so big four different rock\blues\soul bands could be playing and wouldn’t interfere with each other. Walking around with a nice drink, dancing. Music, good drinks, dancing, food…all under one giant roof, outta the sun with the ocean breezes blowing thru. One of the best places ever anywhere. Gone now, but not forgotten. RIP Mister Jimmy Buffett. The Pavilion was your kind of place…
Yep, I saw Eddie Money, 38 special and many many other bands at the pavilion. I think I saw Supertramp there, or was it Mothers Fletchers…….I’m not sure which is a flashback or a memory, lol
We used to stay at the Tip Top Inn down 17 at Pawleys Island. It was big old 4 story. Hurricane Hugo blew it over and sailed it across the inlet to the mainland. I got a pic somewhere of the old Tip Top laying on its side on the shore across the water from where it once stood.
Great memories of when Jimmy was 1st a hit amongst the college campuse youth.
Cancer is such a insidious disease. I have witnessed more than my share of it’s victims succumb to it.
Thanks! Saw him live in Lakeland in winter of 77.
Always enjoyed his music. I remember (getting harder as I pass 80) seeing Concert posters on telephone poles advertising a local group Jimmy Buffett and the Sundowners playing in Key West. We lived a few islands away during the early 70’s. Sundowning was a daily event at Mallory Docks. R.I.P
You have to give the guy credit… he made a fortune from 1 hit single and everything attached to it.
Rest in peace, JB
My favorite Buffet song is one of the lesser-known ones called “He Went to Paris”.
I have told my family, only halfway joking, that I want the last part of a line from it on my tombstone.
“Through 86 years of perpetual motion if he likes you he’ll smile and he’ll say, ‘Some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all the way…”
I probably didn’t agree with him politically or personally in a lot of areas, but his music had a profound irreverence that definitely impacted a generation!
Saw him in concert once, at the formerly named Garden State Arts Center, many moons ago with a childhood friend. Your beautiful memoir brought back the joy of that show, and the thrill of hearing Son of a Sailor and Come Monday loudly, always loudly, on my car stereo. Thank you ever so much for dislodging those joyful memories from a much simpler time.
~A door closes, somewhere the Lord opens a window.
They’re sending the old man home…
CFP has a link up that Jimmy Buffet required his fans to be vaccinated to attend his concert(s)
There’s no all good or all bad in the world, but we need to consider the whole picture good and bad.
https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/its-vax-o-clock-somewhere-jimmy-buffett-welcomes-fans-to-blossom-if-theyre-vaccinated-or-tested
Also understand that he died of a’turbo’ cancer…..but at least he was vaxxed!!!
From the link, they were given a choice:
“fans are required to have received a negative COVID-19 test with 48 hours before entering Blossom or be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Probably lawyers advice…..always ruins everything for everyone. Imagine his political views were from his bubble. He did a concert in my neck of the woods the Redneck Riviera right after the oil spill. His sister LuLu has her restaurant here as well.
That is what the article says, but given what we know today and considering it in your mind do you think this is a good thing?
We all know what that “You have a choice, we’re not forcing anyone” turned into, or have some people perhaps forgotten already. It’s not even a year ago since the US dropped flight restrictions for unvaccinated.
Going to be rearing to go again then sticking those swabs back in your nostrils come October, and to lose your job again in December? Because that is what’s coming if you go along and apologize for this kind of behavior.
He was a good singer, but as far as social issues go he was at least on the wrong side of things at least a couple of times. Then again we all have a choice always.
There were never ‘domestic’ flight restrictions for the unvaccinated in the US. I flew domestically throughout the entire plandemic, with no restrictions tied to the vax.
I also attended a Jimmy Buffett concert in early 2023, and there were no special protocols related to vaccines or Covid tests. When that happened, it must have been a short-lived requirement or else it was related to a specific venue or city.
Cant count the number of family vacays we would take the kids to Gulf Shores or Perdido Key with Jimmy Buffet blasting on the stereo cassette player as we approached…. Just the smell of salt water brings Cheeseburger in Paradise to mind!
“I like mine with lettuce and tomato
heinz 57 and French fried potatoes
big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer
good god almighty which way do I steer”……
He was everything great BUT a strong Demoncrat and Killary lover. Very close to Clintons. But oh i loved his Songs
Searching for that last shaker of salt. RIP Jimmy
I’m so old that I have his first four albums but nothing after Cheeseburger in Paradise. Those early songs were full of feeling.
We are showing our age.
He will be missed.
Godspeed Jimmy….. fair winds and following seas… until our next rendezvous
Semper Fi
Jimmy always kept the wind at his back as he sailed through his life, it seems to me.
