The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) released an urgent consumer notification that Citgo fuel services from the Port of Tampa accidentally mixed Diesel Fuel into gasoline tanker trucks that offloaded product at gas pumps in Tampa, Fort Myers, Cape Coral and other areas. Customers who purchased Citgo gas at the affected areas after August 26th are at risk. Those fuel stations pumped diesel instead of unleaded gasoline.

Citgo identified 29 affected stations — sold at chains like 7-Eleven, BJ’s Wholesale and other convenience stores — in cities including Tampa, Fort Myers, Sarasota and more.

Contaminated gasoline and diesel have the potential of causing engine damage or affecting operability. Impacted stations have been asked to stop selling gas until the contaminated fuel is replaced and tanks are cleaned. Once the stations are cleared or have completed a corrective action plan fuel will once again be safe for purchase.
If you purchased gas from affected stations after 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 26, the Florida Department of Agriculture of Consumer services advises consumers that vehicles or generators may not properly function.
FDACS has opened up the consumer hotline to receive complaints from impacted consumers. If you believe you were sold contaminated gasoline, you can file a complaint by calling 1-800-HELP-FLA online at www.fdacs.gov.
FDACS is coordinating with the Division of Emergency Management (FDEM). FDEM is coordinating with petroleum retailers, ports and all additional stakeholders to ensure that this disruption won’t be widespread and that residents can have seamless access to fuel. At the direction of the Governor, FDEM has already waived size, weight, and hour restrictions to get resources into the state as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Citgo added the following information for Florida consumers:
CITGO has a contamination issue at its Tampa terminal that is affecting fuel sold at the following retail locations in the Tampa area. Please be advised that CITGO is working with the locations to remove contaminated product from these locations. In the meantime, thank you for patience and understanding as we work to return these locations to normal operations. If, however, you have purchased fuel from one of these locations on or after Aug. 26, and are concerned your vehicle may be impacted, you can initiate a claim through the CITGO Good Gas Guarantee program https://www.citgo.com/contact-us. The different sized nozzles are for the end user. Upstream it’s not like that.
If diesel fuel is in the station tank instead of gasoline it’s going in your tank. The nozzle size at the pump assumes that the right kind of fuel is in the tank.

While I tend to agree, 95% of our workforce is scary these days. We had our trees and shrubs sprayed as part of a regular maintenance contract with a reputable national lawn service a few years ago. The technician was disgruntled and on his last day with the company. He filled his fertilizer tank with Round Up that day and every customer on his schedule lost most of their landscape plants. The company’s payment to us to replace our plants alone was $70k and they told us ours wasn’t the largest payout. Between the careless and the disgruntled, there’s a lot of potential for havoc.

What happened to you is not what you are thinking. The delivery trucks were filled with diesel instead of unleaded. They them pumped it into the many stations unleaded underground tanks which supply the corresponding pumps.
That’s exactly what happened to me. I filled up from that underground tank before the error was caught.
It sucks but it was not the end of the world.
It was for my father. The tanks that were supposed to fuel his DC-4 were filled with jet fuel instead. He was able to take off, but then all 4 engines shut down. Only the engineer, who was supposed to check the fuel beforehand, survived the crash.

Port of Tampa operations would have been at maximum stress with imports in prep for the hurricane. Max overtime, use of temp workers, and other related factors. One guy made a mistake and filled gas truck(s) with diesel.
The truck delivers the ‘gas’ to station gas pump tanks along its route. People fill their car gas tanks from the gas pumps …but it’s diesel, not gas. It takes a while for the diesel to cause problems and mechanics to see the problem.
Not a ‘conspiracy’ per se. Could have been deliberate sabotage by one employee but not more.
A conspiracy would involve a pattern of multiple identical events, not what by all appearances is a single screw up with wider consequences downstream.

Once upon a time, we had a Mustang that my wife ruined by pumping it full of diesel absent-mindedly, because the previous owner of the car had for some odd reason pryed-out the nozzle-restrictor that would have prevented her from putting the diesel nozzle into the filler neck. I don’t know if I’ve ever been angrier at her. Oh well. That was more than 25 years ago. There have been no repeats. If she ever fills gasoline into the F350 diesel truck, there will be no repeats…

1st this likely was contaminated in a receiving tank then loaded onto bulk fuel tankers and delivered to the stations. 2nd The terminal operator or the control center likely missed a tender change on a pipeline delivery. Somebody screwed up and either tried covering up or was oblivious to their error and likely lazy by not getting tank samples and running standard tests such as API or specific gravity of the receiving tank which would have shown early on the contamination, also metering and charts would have shown this as well.
Thirdly if you are buying Citgo fuels rethink. Citgo is owned by Venezuela

I’ve seen this happen in the late 90s in Jacksonville Florida. But this was only at one gas station. The tanker put the fuel in the wrong tank.
I worked as a mechanic at Bad Year back then. A few cars came in on wreckers, they wouldn’t start, but they would stutter. While someone was trying to start one, I noticed the smoke coming out of the tailpipe. I went around to check it, and smelled diesel fuel!
I pulled the gas cap and took a whiff. Sure enough, someone put diesel in it. I figured it was just one person that wasn’t paying attention, but by the end of the day there were 20+ cars with the same problem — at my shop.
I was just draining the tanks, and refilling with some regular gas. Diesel won’t really hurt anything, but you’re not going to be able to run a gas vehicle with it.
We were able to get with the customers and find out where they last got gas, then we narrowed it down to one station, and called the station to let them know. That was after the first car.
Fun times.

We all know this “ accident” was anything but- putting diesel into a car that accepts only unleaded gas will harm/destroy the engine and make “ escape” from the hurricane via a damaged car impossible.
