The behavior doesn’t fit any of your three diagnostic guesses very well, but I completely agree with your treatment plan (to go).
Aphasia requires either partial or complete word substitutions the patient is unaware don’t make sense.
A CVA is the same thing as a stroke, but no hemiplegia (common), and if that was going on he couldn’t have come back to answer questions coherently so soon after.
Absence seizures do look like that, but are almost always exclusive to pre-pubescent kids.
I’m not going to guess, because I haven’t seen his scans. A number of other conditions can cause that kind of “pause” in seniors, including TIAs (stroke precursor), brain tumors, carotid artery blockages from high cholesterol and frontotemporal dementia (early stage). I will note that his “handlers” took it in stride, as if they had seen this before. Alcohol doesn’t help.

My FIL had similar little seizures. Usually, he was sitting down, would close his eyes & mumble & then snap out of it 30-60 secs after. But it always took about 24 hrs before he was “back on top of his game plan.” He eventually started getting these seizures while he was standing, fell down hitting something & had to go to the hospital. Looks like McConnell is having similar symptoms. It doesn’t end well.
Hopefully, the “fall” part happens in the near future.
