I’m not sure what is going on at the Twitter with Elon Musk, but apparently either his team is misleading their CEO, or Musk is just shooting from the hip.
In a reply to Matt Taibbi’s report about Substack content being blocked by Twitter and Taibbi’s decision to exit the Musk platform, the Twitter CEO fired back, calling Taibbi a liar.

Twitter’s own internal checkers put a community note, citing the claims by Taibbi were essentially correct. Then, Substack CEO Chris Best weighed in on the issue, claiming the assertions by Elon Musk were false and the weird claim about Taibbi being an employee of Substack is completely without merit.

But when government selects a certain company to recieve cash they are usually slamming the door on many other startups and they certainly help shut down competition.

I would not be surprised if Twitter is still controlled behind the scenes by the ICs to some degree. James Baker et al were in deep for a long time. I suspect this is a major reason Mushk wanted the algorithm made public. So eyes all around the world can see if Twitter actually works per the algorithm or shows signs of manipulation.

The bottom line is, as I have ALWAYS contended, Elon Musk cannot be trusted!
His take on freedom of speech is apparently thus: “You can say anything you wish as long as you only say it on Twitter and do not link to it from other sites.”
His words and actions against Matt Taibbi are distinctly anti-competition and he’s apparently afraid that he cannot compete without deliberately and directly blocking his competitors’ ability to compete.
If Twitter is as he claims, his worries about competition are unjustified.

My twitter account has been banned since ~Jan 7 2021. No appeal has ever been responded to. It just gets “appended to a stale ticket” that has been open for over 2 years now.
To be fair, Musk and the new engineers probably haven’t even discovered that their own appeal system has been co-opted by the previous leadership, and appeals to unban accounts are being routed to /dev/null … and it’s not like my twitter account was brand new – it’s something like 15 years old, and didn’t even have any strikes or violations. It was just banned because I supported Trump and occasionally retweeted treehouse posts or funny memes.
Someone above mentioned that Truth social has it’s own cliques, and you can get banned if Posobiec doesn’t like you. That’s not surprising, he blocked me on twitter several years ago, and I never even directly interacted with him. I assume one of my memes was too edgy. Kinda annoying since that means I can’t see his posts when other people retweet them… just the placeholder “this user limits who can see their tweets”
I can still use twitter in read-only mode, but I can’t follow any new people or un-block people. One weird thing about my account is that I blocked Matt Taibi sometime long ago; I have no idea why, but to read his twitter files posts, I always have to click the extra “view content anyway” button since he’s blocked, and my block list is in read-only mode until I get unbanned some day. And I didn’t block very many people, so he must have posted something I deemed fake news or offensive at the time. I’ll unblock him if I ever get the ability, his content is very insightful.
Also, for all the blackpilled folks, at least give Elon a chance here. He’s had bad interactions with the public in the past, and often explains how he got something wrong. Not every case (e.g., c’mon, unban Alex Jones already) but in some cases…

twitter 1.0 had a free and open api to ANY developer….domestic OR foreign. This was YOUR DATA going to anyone who wanted it. And it was definitely USED for more than just ad and marketing purposes.
twitter 2.0 under musk ENDED this open policy. It closed the door and said: here is a price. A contract. This is how much data you can buy and how much YOU CANNOT BUY.
Matt Taibbi in working to establish his investigative work had access to not just user data but private internal data .and also the API domain networks. Without this access he would never have been able to report ANYTHING other than speculative gossip. So musk gave him access…to ALL OF IT.
Substack is not matt’s “employer”…but it a distinction without too much distinction. Matt profits from monetizing his work ON THE PLATFORM. Substack is not a non for profit. it is a FOR profit company. And it does have terms and contracts that ALL users that want to monetize have to sign. So musk is wrong in the sense that matt is not a direct employee..and he would be wrong technically. But there is a reason for his “error”…
substack has a beta program currently in design to make its’ own twitter competitor. Nerds have been discussing this ever since twitter was bought by Elon. Many FORMER twitter engineers have been working to get access to not only the twitter data (which is very important to train their beta and production software as well as give them a advantage where to target new users), but also to download twitter software..
While it is true that Elon released most of the twitter code for open source review…it was never expected to be copied for the purpose of creating a competitor to twitter.
It would appear that Matt (and others ) were keen on using his special access so they could collect data and software code for such a project.
Of course Elon would object. of course he would seriously throttle a delimit access.
If matt wants to do investigative journalist, there is little doubt that he can continue to do so. But it”s clear that his motives at this point are beyond simply doing reporting. It would appear he has used his special access to help other build a competitor.

Or was getting access to the Twitter files supposed to be monitized independently by the authors, do you know?
no…matt was not paid by twitter. now was shellenberger. (sp?) I don’t know of any other journalists or researcher involved in the newsworthy aspect of twitter 1.0 (I am sure there probably was some others involved to help matt and shellenberger but they have not been identified. I would assume that Elon had some of his employees and contractors assist matt and shellenberger with some technical lifting….neither matt nor shellenberger have a technical background to build query software for instance or to understand some of the legal documents wrt to API developers…or how to perform attribution for API networks. so specifically, no matt and shellenberger would not be employees. And this is exactly how they desired and committed themselves to the work. it was done for what appears to be a standard reason of avoiding the perception of carrying water for Elon (independence) but also so they could work out an arrangement to monetize their own journalism in the discoveries they would develop and publish …as well as future book deals. Both are smart: maintaining professional integrity and also having a savvy business acumen.
this is my understanding. reading from various blogs, boards, from matt directly in his congressional testimony and from twitter itself. As well as substack. Combined with a general knowledge of how journalism is monetized in the modern interwebs.
My point was not to impugn matt or cast any doubts on his journalism…I think that work stands on its own merits. And yes, the work is reviewable for verification. Likewise, I was not posting this to impugn musk..the changes he has made with twitter also stand on its own reviewable condition…something twitter 1.0 never provided. This includes the entire twitter base code…now out there in open source form. Anyone can review it…and comment and even make recommendations. This is a complete departure from twitter 1.0. Of course we can notice that twitter 2.0 does not censor *unduly* anyone from commenting. But certainly this does not mean people can tweet how to build a nuke…or personally harass someone or dox them or engage in neonazi bullshit…there are still some limits on what you are allowed to tweet. And I agree with this. It’s the same thing here at CTH. Its a very open platform, but there are some rules in place that need to be established ..otherwise this place turns into reddit from hell…or tiktok/only fans..where ANYTHING goes. Each platform should have it’s own identity cultured to the audience and decorum it shares….sort of like how a private business would adapt. No shirt, no shoes…no service…a good analogy. Or smoking is not permitted. Or you will have your ass kicked if you insult a waiter! Things like that. I am not against businesses discriminating. but what I am certainly against is the US government influencing how the largest online “townhall” and what is and what is not “right” speech. And so there is a significant difference between a coffee shop and the world’s largest online place where the line between government propaganda and speech police and private rules have been blurred.

There is a very real possibility that Musk doesn’t understand the animal he acquired and has no ability to leash it. I can’t imagine spliting my time on the endevours he pursues. Which means he must trust people around him and what he is being told. This isn’t totally disimilar to what Trump endured. You step up to the monster you know, but the legs, roots, and tentacles of the deranged trans-beast stretch beyond your grasp.
With that said, Musk is a showman, businessman, and egoist beyond all else. What happens going forward will speak volumes. I have lots of respect for Matt as journalist, and Elon should be recognized for his accomplishments, but there is something askew here.
How this plays out should say much. It SHOULD be a simple matter to resolve, if not…well then…

Taibbi is a garden-variety liberal who was afforded an unprecedented opportunity to expose the feds intrusion into the twitter social media platform. Musk, for reasons to try to appear neutral, also entrusted Bair Weiss. I undertsand the intent to try to appear neutral, even to a fault, but the scorpion will always sting the frog, especially after he has already been brought ashore because it is simply in their nature.
Matt was likely trying to establish himself as an independent journalist, even if it meant biting the very hand that fed him.

We need a twitter like messaging service built as a layer into the internet protocol. Source code implementations adhering to current internet protocols can be found in some linux type operating systems. If big tech won’t fund it due to political reasons (big tech=red china) then I’m sure others have the resources to do so.
Then competing social media companies could build user facing apps and filter and add functionality as they see fit.
I think Jack Dorsey mentioned this approach at one of his congressional appearances.

I am sure Taibbi can find a better platform if nothing binds him, and that Musk can find another honest journalist to do the reporting.

Twitter vs Substack
From the simplest street corner pick-up basketball game to global wars, people take sides. Sounds like they’re lining up to start choosing who’s on which team.
It’s fun reading Ars Technica comments for that reason alone. The clique hive mind there hates Elon, but because of vaccine-related skepticism, and because they’re anti-free speech, they hate Substack even more.
So at Ars Technica, there’s a little upvote/downvote civil war brewing among their own, and not just against commenters that smell even slightly impure, and I love to see it.
Why would we think he was loyal to our USA he’s neither born or raised here, I would have to think in a different manner concerning a man like musk there’s not many around such as him, that’s just me observing from afar, seems more of a global type but is a friend to freedoms which we were built on makes for an better marriage so to speak.
Which version of this do we want… we’ll give Ol’ Willie the clicks…

Given the most important question to ask in the face of this happening, and the answer to that question, I think we should be very careful jumping to conclusions about it.
The most important question to ask is:
“who benefits from a wedge driven between musk and taibbe?”
And everyone here knows, or should by now know, the answer to that question.
My first take away is; why not just meet one-on-one and talk it out? Make a decision. Move on.
They obviously didn’t do that or if they did, the one-on-one didn’t go well.
Which leads me to my second take away; the 4th branch of government is involved and playing games.
I’m just a simple-minded cog in the wheel of our society and look at life in a simplistic, common sense way.
When I had a disagreement, needed clarification or wanted to settle a matter, I did not call everyone in the government agency to meet in my office and break forth in dialogue.
BUT, that’s what we are witnessing in the Twittersphere between Elon and Matt. This makes no sense at all, unless (as Sundance has so eloquently and judiciously written about in depth steadfastly), something else is going on behind the scenes and it involves another party which seems to cause chaos and confusion.
So far, that 3rd party appears to be successful because there is much confusion and chaos going on right now.
