Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has conceded defeat after coming in third place in the election. Lightfoot makes history as the first Chicago mayor in 40-years to lose her first effort at reelection.
(CHICAGO) — Mayor Lori Lightfoot conceded defeat Tuesday night, ending her efforts for a second term and setting the stage for Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson to run against former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas for Chicago mayor.
A visibly shaken Lightfoot conceded the race just before 9 p.m. and said she will be “rooting and praying for our next mayor to deliver for the people of the city for years to come.” – WATCH:
“Obviously, we didn’t win the election today, but I stand here with my head held high and a heart full of gratitude,” Lightfoot said, highlighting how the city emerged from a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic and made “real progress on public safety.”
The Associated Press just before 9 p.m. called the race for Johnson, who in addition to defeating Lightfoot also outmuscled U.S. Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García.
Johnson’s victory sets up an ideological battle with Vallas over the future path of the nation’s third-largest city. The two will face off in five weeks on April 4. (more)

If you add up the “Black” vote, then you will see that once that portion of the electorate unites, then Vallas more likely than not, will lose. Vallas may attract some of the Black vote given his past as CEO of the public school system—but he left that job more than 20 years ago. Will the Hispanic vote go his way? Probably if enough turn out to vote. But that remains a key question since what will Jesus Garcia do? What might Gerry Chico do? Vallas will attract some of the Black vote. But will he attract enough Black and Hispanic votes to win? It will be a long shot if it occurs. Keep in mind also that the “professional” political class has never warmed to Vallas.

Grew up in a suburb close to Chicago and moved south for college and never returned. The great Richard J. Daley was Mayor then, while somewhat corrupt (1960 election) he loved the City and had the backs of the police and all civil servants. He made the right call to have the Police go after the hippies in Grant Park at the ’68 Convention when they started breaking windows and destroying businesses. Frankly they should have broken a few more heads but the Media came out of the liberal closet and sided with the hippies of which he never recovered from casting the City in a bad light. True Chicagoans supported his decision.
After Daley passed in 76 it has been a long line of worthless democratic Mayors culminating in the black, lbgtq whatever….who destroyed the City.

Oh happy day. Lightfoot is out (pending a ranked-choice settlement). And the leader is the former CEO of Chicago’s Public School System. Based on the remarkable success of government schools in that town, and the steady stream of well-educated civilized graduates, I’d say Chicago has jumped from the frying pan into the fire.
