Let me qualify this post and question by saying this is something I have wanted to ask and write about for quite a while. I often ask this question to people I meet in general life discussion, and I am very interested to hear every response. Today is a great day to ask this…
Think back… So, you are living your life, doing what you and everyone familiar to you are doing in the ordinary and regular way of living your specific life.
Perhaps you paid some attention to the political comings and goings of things, perhaps not.
Perhaps like most comfortably invisible people you were just putting one foot in front of the other, and generally doing the day-to-day things that most would consider ordinary.
Then one day, for some unknown and likely not that consequential reason, something caught your attention. Something piqued your curiosity; perhaps you noticed something you wouldn’t ordinarily have noticed. Perhaps you heard something, or saw something, or were just in a situational space where something itched your brain as you looked at something, heard something or noticed something that just didn’t quite fit or sit right.
Perhaps that little something, or big something, caused you to look just a little bit closer at the story, event or moment with a little more curiosity than before. Perhaps you dug into that specific moment with a little more than a side-eye glance, and you noticed something. After looking at it a little closer, you realized that construct was not at all what it appeared to be on the surface.
From that moment forward, for the first time, you really started to question the ‘thing’ that was in front of you, and from that moment forward, you woke up to recognize that things around you, things you perhaps didn’t pay attention to before, were not what you thought they were. It was from this moment when you really started to pay attention and your political awakening began.
Question: When was that moment for you?
I am always amazed at the replies I get in real life to this question of when the individual awakening began.
For some it was at an early age, for others much later in life. For some it was recently, and for others it was a long time ago. However, for everyone there was that moment when it started, and it is completely unique to the individual.
So, on this day, Sunday February 19, 2023, a generally innocuous day in the grand scheme of things, I pose this question to everyone.
Yes, even all the CTH lurkers who read here and never join the conversation. The comment section is open for all replies with the general rules of on-line decorum still standing. Us old schoolers still use the early internet standards of on-line discussion, and CTH requests polite and civil conversation that enlightens, expands thinking and uplifts the audience.
I am genuinely curious and will be reading every reply because it’s really cool to see what that “moment” was for each person. I’m pretty sure the entire CTH community will also enjoy reading the unique replies to the question.
We all travel a different path. We all come from different, likely comfortably invisible, life experiences. And we all merge into this big melting pot of curious people who are looking deeply at the issues we face. Regardless of how each of us arrived here, the larger dynamic is that we likely share a common curiosity for the reality of our situation. It’s a safe bet to say that almost everyone reading this is in the top-tier of “high information” consumers.
My question is not what arrived you at The Conservative Treehouse, but rather what the moment was when you began looking around and realizing that things just didn’t seem to add up. That’s the origin of the journey. That’s the moment I am inquiring about.
Perhaps it’s a weird way of looking at CTH, but our fellowship is always what has been the most important aspect to this little corner of the internet. It’s not the content of the Treehouse, but the conversation on the porch that matters. You, the readers, friends, people who assemble here, are the important element. Not me and not the site admins.
That’s genuinely the way I have always looked at our fellowship, and that’s also the reason for every detail I put into keeping this little corner of the internet standing.
So, with that in mind, what was that moment in your life when you realized the social, political and/or media narrative, was not at all what it was presented to be?
Love to all,
~ Sundance

I was in 6th Grade during the 1980 Election, and was part of the “gifted education” program (back when those were allowed). Three pairs of us were chosen to research and represent the three candidates’ (Carter, Reagan and Anderson) platforms in a debate before the whole class. I was on the “Anderson” team, but in preparation for the debate we had to study the platforms of all candidates. Right away, I saw that how Reagan was portrayed in the news was not even close to what he really believed and wanted to do as president.
I studied History in College and ultimately became a Lawyer and through that time witnessed (and went deep on) the Clarence Thomas hearings, the Florida recount, WMD’s in Iraq, etc. My eyes were opened wide, however, during the 2008 election. During that time, I completely abandoned mainstream media (although I didn’t put much stock in them at that time anyhow), and found news that included source documents and real fact/information. It was at this time that I found CTH.
I’ve been a lurker ever since, but appreciate the fellowship and more importantly, the detail and independent sources that are cited in all stories. Thanks to Sundance and fellow Treepers, I know I am not alone!
Maybe I’m not very perceptive, but in my own experience I find this question difficult because I can remember several events that stand out and gradually changed my thinking over the years. Coming of age during the bicentennial, I remember having a fascination with every aspect of the revolution that created our country. As I grew older I became very cynical of talk of limited government when seeing no results after assuming that I and many others had voted for for it’s champion so many times. Ever expanding government made me resent it with the passing of time.
One clear memory of an event that shook my thinking was in 2004 when I was living in South America working as an ex-pat on contract for several years. A co-worker opened up to me while we were eating lunch together about his disdain for my nation’s government based on his impression of the USA as nothing but a corrupt, meddling, and deceitful enterprise motivated not by the sowing of freedom and liberty but rather by economic power and greed. Although I still disagree with the extent of his premise, seeing reality as more complex than his conclusions, I began to question more the motives surrounding the trends that were leading our country down a road it should not have traveled, at least according to some of the men that founded it.
Fast forward to 2010 and the response to the Tea Party, then fast forward to 2016 and the response to Trump, then cap it off with the repeal of Obamacare that wasn’t in 2017, and my own “spidey senses” are driving me nuts. By the time the caldron of 2020 arrives I feel like I’m stuck watching a bad movie and all the exits to the theater are locked.
May God help us all and may He continue to bless these United States of America.
I came across CTH during the Ferguson riots – I am located in the St. Louis metro area and the local and national news was pushing a very different version of the events compared to the research presented on the pages of CTH….really showed me how far from the facts and evidence the media would bend things to get the narrative out and was amazed to watch the dichotomy continue even after the Missouri & DOJ declined to pursue any charges against the officer. Have been a ‘lurker’ here ever since and found the content to be consistently excellent for social, political, economic analysis. I support the CTH team and appreciate the disinfecting sunlight the site frequently provides re current topics.
When I first saw the Zapruder film
That’s really how far back it goes, the assassination… maybe even the fifties when the intelligence agencies started to feel their oats.
The onion has been pealing for a long time. One big one was when CTH1 was attempted to be taken down by the powers that be. Still happening only I expect it now. Tried to send an email through my gmail account to the lastrefuge address and google’s servers are down!?!

Humble questions create amazing answers. “Seek to understand..” This thread is a gem that could be permi-linked on the side boards.. “Meet Your Fellow Treepers”.
One of the great thing about the old REDSTATE was when an article was “liked” the person was added to the byline. Click the “liked” link and 50 or 100 Nom de plumes would overwhelm the screen. We are not alone..
You have created something amazing.

Robert McNamara wrote a book about VietNam in which he admitted that he and everyone else in the upper echelons of DC knew that VN was a lost cause from the start. On the day I learned that, I did a complete reversal. I became solidly anti-war, and I questioned EVERYTHING that issued from Washington. I had already been disappointed at Goldwater’s loss in ’64, but I ascribed that to bad publicity. At that point, I knew we were really at war — with ourselves.
The dividing up of land/countries following the end of World War II. Roosevelt and Churchill were either played, or they were players.
Dad was NASA from LOD days. Apollo 1 fire, I was 6 years old. People still believe the lie.
Again in 1977. Reading my first New Yorker magazine, friend’s dorm room, brain connecting dots to Wall Street Journal, and evening news.
17 years old knew the facts/ideas could not align so trimly in any mathematical model.
Knew the entire big picture a lie.
After Trump lost took your advice about God and sourcing my news. Game changer myriad layers.
I grew up in a left-liberal Democrat household. My parents subscribed to the Washington Post, not the Washington Star (which was Republican), and they were always interested in politics. I remember watching the Army-McCarthy hearings on daytime TV (after school). The relevant question here is when I became conservative.
It was during the Carter Presidency, late ’70s. I had begun to realize the whole left-wing mindset was out of whack. Then I began listening to Roy Masters on the car radio, who was on a mission to cut through “the hypnosis of everyday life.” He had been excoriating Carter and politicians in general. At one point a listener asked him, “What about Ronald Reagan?” Masters, a Californian, answered, “Oh, Reagan’s OK.” Which meant that RR was different, somehow, with his heart (and head) in the right, clear-thinking place. So I began paying more attention, and in 1980 cast my first vote for a Republican.
When Sarah Palin became a Vice presidential candidate
I had a Journalism class in 1979, taught by a woman who wrote for the “Voice of America” in Europe.
She not only taught us how to write a cogent article, but also how to manipulate the content for a particular bias.
A little late from this chair to the commenting dance…how beautiful. How great to read everyone’s “story”. Thank you Sundance for all!
I grew up with my grandparents. My grandfather had an eighth grade education and was a first generation American with older brothers born in Germany. He read the papers every day and was successful in farming and his electrical line career.
My grandmother was from a pioneer family in Oregon, arriving in 1840. She had a car when she was 18, (1917), worked as a teacher at the same age, and then graduated from college when she was thirty.
I remember where I was when JFK was shot. Always REALLY wondered about how a dying man can get next to the killer of a president, and put a bullet in his gut.
Our family hated LBJ and the Vietnam war…Remember going to school with the neighbor Mom and kids, and the radio saying “This war could last another ten years….” A neighbor boy my mom fed on school mornings (his parents were both in the military), who was quite a bit older then I, volunteered for this war, and was shot dead on his first mission, as were 58,000 other American sons…and daughters.
How about 1968 (of course from 1965 on our cities were on fire….kind of like recently, eh?), with the band Chicago and its first (?) album, with the sounds of the street riots at the Democratic convention? Ah yes, those early free speech proponents, stop the war, burn your bra, take down the man, and on and on and on.
Richard Nixon came to our home town in Oregon in 1972. My grandma, said she felt so good about him as president…she really trusted him.
I had a high draft number, the year the whole damn crap of it ended. Argued Watergate with a democrat guy from San Diego in college I remember.
Voted for John Anderson…The Gipper next time.
Supported the Republican agenda, hated Billie Boy Clinton, had a lawn sign up for Mitt the bitch and boy Paul…..
Attended a tea party rally, with a young visitor I was chaperoning from Communist China. The streets were adorned with lots of folks holding homemade signs against OCare, while there were many others too with professionally produced signs in favor……our your Chinese friend certainly had his eyes opened on this American experience, while as we walked back to the office, were were able to see the brightly painted buses that brought the folk with the professionally made signs (not tea party) to our town to protest….Obummer really piqued the desire to know more…a guy with no accomplishment and sketchy background….president of the United States…No Way.
But, after all this politics, I really did not notice the marionette strings until our Man DJT came to us…..and Sundance with your clear analysis and humanity
Cheers to All….
August 1968 when the Warsaw pact invaded Czechoslovakia.
I wanted to see how “the forces that control us” (to borrow the words of BF Skinner) operated first hand, so upon my Army discharge in 1971 I moved from Philly to DC to get a ringside seat. That resulted in my first career as a trade association operative for the housing industry, and my eventual lifelong relocation to New Orleans.
When the Clinton administration covered up the TWA flight 800 shoot down.
Soon after the incident a reporter went to a local airport air traffic control center and did a report where they played back the radar picture from about 40 seconds before the incident. You could see the missile coming from offshore traveling 3-4 times as far as the TWA Flt. during each sweep of the radar. I think that was the only time that was ever aired. I’ve sat in front of enough radar consoles to know what I saw. I always thought that president Trump should have exposed that to blow up the credibility of the FBI.
Thanks for jogging my memory of that other (see my comment below yours) despicable incident courtesy of the Clinton White House.
The gaslighting was off the charts even back then: 96 of 102 eye witnesses saw the missile approach from the surface and take down the plane, while the “authorities” and “media” insisted they not believe their lying eyes — that the streak started from the plane itself and went to the surface.
http://flight800.org/eye.html
Thanks for jogging mine also. I was on a plane getting to leave Islip on Long Island on 9/11. Minutes from taking off, the co-pilot opened the door literally a couple minutes after the 1st plane hit and said a terrorist just crashed into the WTC. Couldn’t get off the western end of the island so went east to Montauk where I spent lots of time as a kid on our sailboat. Spent the afternoon and evening at a restaurant/bar waiting for the morning ferry and spoke to a gentlemen who recounted what he and his neighbors living on the south shore saw regarding TWA 800 and investigators who came out a few times to get the observations…. It wasn’t what the Gov/media was telling us…
Neo-Awakening (August 1992): State- and Media-Sanctioned Murders, Lies, and Cover-Ups (sans Punishments) regarding the events at & after Ruby Ridge near the end of the GHWB administration.
Three-Alarm Fire Awakening (early 1993): The despicable Clintons arriving at and first darkening the White House, soon followed by State- and Media-Sanctioned MASS MURDER, LIES, and COVER-UPS (sans Punishments) regarding the events at & after Mt. Carmel outside of Waco.
Red-Pilled (1997): Attended the San Francisco premiere of the documentary film ” Waco: The Rules of Engagement” — followed by a Q&A with the maker of the film.
While witnessing what really happened via the FLIR Thermal Camera video from helicopters circling above — the tank starting the fire; dozens of men, women, & children fleeing the rear of the compound systematically murdered by FBI automatic rifle fire; the continuation of lies from the “authorities” and “media”; and the cover-ups including immediately demolishing the compound along with a #FailureTheater Congressional “investigation” — I could literally feel my blood boiling, and haven’t been the same since.
Yes. My mother worked as a paralegal. She worked with one of the attorneys who defended Randy Weaver and consequently had a lot of inside information. She knew details that never hit the news. We talked about it a lot for years–that trial went on for a long time. Absolutely horrifying. I am also reminded of the Oregon Malheur shooting. As they gunned down Finnicum the reporters were celebrating. Another heartbreaking moment. There are quite a few.
I probably started paying attention after marrying my husband 27 years ago. He’s always been extremely well read on politics and will read for hours each day including this site. I can’t imagine being unaware anymore; sadly so many of our friends are.
My wife said that she could have written that. 😉
mine, was after reading a six month free subscription to the Nation in 1992. The folks at the Nation did not like HW Bush and WJ Clinton for their involvement in the guns and cocaine business they facilitated. Subsequently I listened to a radio talk guy out of Florida who interviewed (many times)some guy who was involved in shipping the guns and cocaine with his airplane.
Tough question as I really had to think about when exactly was the inflection point.
2008 – Towards the end of George Bush (the great betrayer) presidency, when the investors in the stock market were hung out to dry leaving them with nothing. Couple of specific examples; AIG went bankrupt because on paper their assets could only be valued at what they could be sold for in 30 days and when GMC went bankrupt the assets and value went to the unions and employees instead of the stock holders.
Of course Roberts flip on Obama care, the treatment of President Trump, McCain’s vote not to end Obama care, Graham’s and Romney’s every utterance (think oral flatulence) and the courts, in particular the Supreme Court’s lack of interest in elections have all reinforced my thinking.
Justice Roberts flip on Obamacare was a tragedy for the American people… I hated Roberts after that crap.
My maternal grandfather lost everything he had in the crash of 1929 and my parents were children of the Great Depression. Listening to their stories and lessons gave an understanding of how bad government can be. When Dubya started sending “rebate” checks in 2008 I started paying attention.
Gulf of Tolkien incident. Official explanations didn’t any make sense.
In fact, America’s involvement in the Vietnam War, that resulted, never made any sense.
I am 67. My wife and I got married at 18.. (still married), and proceeded to have 6 kids by age 29. I was a free thinking young man who grew up in the 60’s and 70’s but as my kids started to grow I realized a more conservative mindset was starting to take hold … in the best interest of our young family. So from apx. the late 70’s to present I’ve been a traditional conservative and have dug deeper than the mainstream media to formulate my own view as to our governments role in its citizens well being. Rush Limbaugh among many other conservative thinkers helped influence my own ability to connect dots and look the other way from the parroted media headlines of the day. I have been a longtime reader of CTH and am one of those first time posters you mentioned. Thanks for your contribution to light and truth in journalism. Blessings to you!
Ron Paul in his 2008 presidential runs , and the years thereafter.
Sundance, Thank you for your continuing work, which figured heavily in my own blog post yesterday. My awakening has come in waves, over a lifetime, and it’s mostly defined by a long and painful series of betrayals and my discovery of them.
At first, the betrayals were small and inconsequential, but had little to do with politics. Later, they were larger and increasingly had to do with politics.
Nowadays, I anticipate the betrayals. I see most of them coming a mile away. I don’t trust any politician/organization to forego the opportunity to betray me, or the country. So far, I can list those who haven’t on one hand, and I don’t need all those fingers.
I enlisted when I was 17. I went overseas just two years later. I was welcomed to Germany with a car-bombing as I exited the terminal at Rhein-Main for my walk with bags and baggage to the 21st Replacement. My government lied to me that day. It wasn’t the first, but it was notable. As I spent my first night in Germany pulling guard duty on the security perimeter around the bombing site(as did all of the arriving junior enlisted over the next week or two), I pondered what brought me there.
Before it was all said and done, I spent the remainder of the 1980s in Germany. When I came back stateside, it was with a frau and a bouncing bundle of joy at my side. I was shocked at what I discovered. While I had been abroad making the world safe for Democracy, my country had changed. While I was overseas standing against communism, it had been incrementally erected at home. That began my political awakening. It was also another in a long string of colossal betrayals.
I hadn’t suspected the depth and breadth of the betrayals, but our government has not been OUR government for a very long time. The recent claims by Carlson and others about JFK and Nixon don’t surprise me. Due to research I did in the 90s when I finally made it to a college campus, I had learned that FDR was a freaking monster. I learned that most of the people the so-called DeepState push as “good presidents” in our history were no such thing. I’ve also learned that the ones they most defame were among our better, or sometimes simply innocuous presidents.
What I’ve noticed and learned most of all is that the media has been corrupt and part of the machine for much longer than most people realize. Some people revere Walter Kronkite. Another commie. Murrow. Another. The whole thing is garbage. The only thing that’s kept America alive all these years, against all of these traitors, and against the machinations of the people running us into the ground is the basic goodness of a majority of the American people over time, and much of that is now slipping away too. While I’ll never stop fighting, I’m not optimistic.
Thanks for being a bright spot in the dimming light!
When I realized we were not fighting to win during the Vietnam War.
Been interested since Bush #1.Since then I said it would be great if we had a businessman for President. When Trump was running I got excited I knew he could win ..The day after he went down the elevator we were @ gold I bet $200 with 5 people Trump would win.. He is the best in my lifetime did almost everything he said he would no one ever promised that much and delivered.. As a USAF Vet and boomer Trump best in my lifetime. 2$ gas 3% mortgage rates no WARS. He threw sand in the Deep State gears. They attacked with the COVID scam me I love confrontation I love his in your face straight talk I loved how he treated the media.. He will destroy the Democrats in 2024. MAGA
It was in the late 80’s, early 90’s when 60 Minutes did a story about a Morman Welfare farm in Utah. They outright twisted and lied about MANY of the facts. I know as i have many friends in the church in Utah and found out the truth from several of them. I have NEVER trusted the MSM since then. Verify, then trust if it’s deserved. But always verify, every time.
Verify then trust. ‘Tis my approach also.
Also I suggest everyone read The Franklin Coverup by John W. DeCamp. If you can stomach it
Roughly 15 years ago, my two pals, who are much more like older brothers to me, got my head moving this direction. On this particular day, we were at a car show, the three of us sitting around our cars, and Greg, the brother 15 years my senior, began discussing the direction the world was heading, and how they openly talked about it in 79 when he was a civil engineering student at Cal Poly. It was the first time I had heard of the Cloward-Piven plan, and at the time I put it into the back of my mind. Through the next year or two, the term kept coming up frequently, and things began to unfold and make much more sense daily when filtered through the “Look Under the Surface” lens. In the time since, nearly everything considered conspiratorial only a few years prior, is now a fact of the world. I came to CTH through a link, though I can’t recall exactly where it was, but I immediately bookmarked the site, and now it’s a daily stop to take the things I think, and see how it holds up against well thought out, well researched, and well written content taking us beneath the shiny surface of things.
My Mother says God hits you with a few pebbles to wake you up then a rock then a boulder… 2019 – 2020 and it’s raining rocks
PS My old man said it was when 45 was elected and how the media responded as if a nuke had dropped.
The first time I saw Barack Obama speak and the reception he got from the media and those who, I now realize, wanted to “fundamentally transform” our country. Spidey senses alerted immediately. I knew something was very, very “off” about that guy.
Yeah! I never liked the way that guy looked at us looking at him. It gave me the willies!
The continuing creation and expansion of quasi paramilitary/police forces equipped with military grade weapons and technology within numerous individual branches (agencies) of government that appear to operate independently outside of any controlling/central federal oversight and Constitutional protections while ignoring state jurisdictional authority. The optics regarding the deployment of these forces over the past several years against US citizens appears as political harassment instead of any justified law enforcement activity. Considering this administration’s efforts and in fact the uniparty’s continuing efforts to cripple and deplete our military plus restrictions of military use in the domestic environment, are the aforementioned individual agency paramilitary/police forces the future brown shirts to enforce the demanded desired political and policy behavior?
I’m 46 years old, so I wasn’t even alive when JFK was killed. But growing up, I did read Jim Garrison’s book, On the Trail of the Assassins, and of course saw the Oliver Stone movie JFK. Back then, looking at the evidence, it seemed pretty clear that elements of our government killed a President. Today, it’s virtually certain that occurred.
I initially thought that could have been a “one-off”. But as I learned more about modern history, J. Edgar Hoover and how our FBI was run, RFK/MLK deaths, Iran Contra, Mena, AK, OKC bombing, WTC 1993, I slowly became more and more red pilled. By the time of 9/11 in 2001, I knew everything we were fed by the government was a load of crap.
The questions in my mind then became: Why doesn’t everyone see it? And, when will a critical mass of people put a stop to this? These questions still exist in my mind, though I believe the first one is best answered by the amount of military-grade psychological warfare pushed on the populace. I’m certainly glad that has mostly not had an effect on me.
I think the Internet is key to seeing the world as it is (though, like any tool, it can also be used to poison minds). How many of us would have taken the jab if the pandemic had happened in pre-Internet times, say the 1980s? Virtually all news and information came from the mainstream media back then, so I think I probably would have taken it (though I was a kid then), as would my parents and other family. The Internet allows collaboration with those that can pull at little strings in the story, crowdsourced running down of facts (or uncovering of BS), at a scale never before possible. It is a critical tool when used in this way.
Sadly, too many only use it to view TikToks and such. But on this website, we are among those that do critically analyze the world in front of us. The world has some very dark and evil elements. Despite this, I am increasingly hopeful that we will, as a people, rise above this evil and bring about the dawn of a new era. It’s within our power to bring about, all we need is a critical mass that commits to not stop until it is done. It will not be easy, but nothing worth doing ever is.
Or maybe it was in the early 1980s when John McCain betrayed the family values constituents.
“We are five days away from fundamentally transforming America”. The coup began five days later.
I knew that day the country I grew up in and loved so much had ended. I cried for the loss of this beautiful Republic.
President Trump got in the way and the powers that be needed to destroy him to continue the coup.
My awakening was during Obama’s first run for President, when he said we are going to fundamentally transform America and we are going to change traditions. I thought what is he talking about ? What does this mean? Why doesn’t he explain himself ? Why isn’t anyone asking him what he means ? Why are all the people cheering him on, when they have no idea what he means ?
It was his (and The Left’s) overt admission that they hate, rather than love, this country.
If you love some one or thing (e.g. another person), the last thing you want to do is “fundamentally transform” it or them.
2009-10 with the emergence and passage of Obamacare was the turning point for me and my wife. We became politically active in California and subsequently moved to Texas where we are more effective in advocating conservative ideas.
What a wonderful surprise from Sundance when I opened CTH this morning, always my first place to look, and there was this marvelous invitation to share our individual journeys to CTH and to an awakening. CTH came later for me, during the Rona lockdowns, when I became a dedicated reader and, rarely, a contributor to the merry band of those in the know, the Treepers. Thank you Sundance and team.
When I graduated from high school in 1963 I didn’t think much about the system which governed us in DC or in Trenton. I had parents who were Republicans, who had taught us to be responsible, to take nothing that belonged to others, to seek out leadership positions, and to work for what we wanted.
Those values led me to buy a car the year before I could drive, a year when I disassembled it, and made it ready, a 1929 Ford Model A. It became my high school car, with its chicken wire and plastic sheeting roof, and its single required window, the windshield. It was hand painted gray primer. No one had anything like it, although a neighbor confessed one day that he’d owned one which only had one bolt holding the body on the chassis when he’d driven it to the junk yard. His little boy of seven would often come over and help me.
Then I went to college. My professors managed to dislodge my value system, and one even gave my the habit of reading I. F. Stone’s newsletter, much later revealed to have survived on funding from communists. In college we learned that the government was wrong to be in Vietnam.
After I’d graduated and married we went to DC to protest the war. I even served during one protest in Philadelphia as some kind of monitor, wearing an arm band. At the protest I caught sight of a police detective in a nice suit beating up a protester down a long alley. I knew instantly that what he was doing was wrong.
When I look at photographs taken that day in Ohio I can see myself as one of the outraged crowd reacting in angry shock when the soldiers began “cutting us down.” Most of the angry men have beards, as do I. In the light of these events it was natural to think that it was an Us against Them time. And I had joined the hive mind of what passes for liberal thought. We all hated Mr. Nixon. That was probably enough.
When I tracked down a college friend many years later he said that for him graduation day was a one A day that was ended the next day when his status changed from student deferment to A-1 and shipment to Vietnam. Several other friends, I learned later, had served there and more than one had died there.
Graduated with an English Degree and few job prospects, I sold encyclopedias and found other make work. After I married I went to graduate school (what else?) and in my second year began teaching comp to Freshmen students as a teaching assistant.
The summer of ‘75 I farmed along side a new friend, a recently retired marine sergeant who had served three tours in the “Nam and had been a drill instructor at Parris Island in between his tours. He had emerged a man with no violence left in him. Our wives became friends, too. So I decided to become, somehow, a farmer. And I moved us to Penn State to enroll in ag classes. They gave me a job as a technical writer.
When I went to their English department to see if there was a possibility to teaching a class, they scooped me up and I taught Technical Writing for four years on the main campus, teaching fourteen courses a year for four years. After a year or two my wife got hired into the library where she made a great career. As academics we were ensnared, again, in the liberal mindset. I spent a year in business, and then taught for eight more years at a branch campus. I was no longer sold on the liberal vision for America by now, but I never could put my experiences into perspective, until one day, after teaching my morning classes, I drove an hour over to another of my “part time” jobs as a counselor and GED teacher in a county jail. While I learned a lot in that job, it was the drive itself that reclaimed me.
A radio station in Altoona PA called TALK was embarking on an all talk format, anchored by the then fledgling Rush Limbaugh Show. In the contemporaneous setting (1982), Rush put into words the values and prejudices I had grown up with – family values, a belief in education and bettering yourself, an entertaining format, no guests to interview (except the occasional President), and lots of talk by Rush and by his All American listeners.
This years long experience, three hours each week from noon to one, is when I learned that what I had always known was true was still true, and that what I had absorbed in college was not. RIP Rush. What a wonderful moment when Rush came to Washington and, seated by First Lady Melanie, received national recognition and accolades from President Trump for his thirty years of teaching.
So our earliest memories, if truthfully earned, and our inborn sense of right and wrong, as well as the guidance of friends and radio friends, returned me to the wisdom of my WWII parents and family, and can return us all to the values I have discussed herein.
Thanks again, Sundance, for performing your dance so eloquently and for so many years. Especial thanks for trekking to DC during Rona and learning and sharing what you found there. But it is the restoration effort after Ian that best shows your natural and healthy conservatism. May God bless and keep you and yours, all the days of your lives.
As a child, I paid some attention in 2008. As a teenager I devoured the 2012 cycle (and was even convinced romney had the best shot so we should vote for him). After 2012, I became so disillusioned with much of the right wing media, after all, obama had been a bad president and romney should win easily, so they said. I was subbed to Dick Morris daily emails at the time. He said he would be there all night until romney won. He checked out after just an hour or two when it became certain
obama had won reelection. I grew up in a conservative household so I never trusted the government, or the fbi, cia, any of them. After benghazi I questioned why we had been at war my entire lifetime in a country halfway across the globe. I questioned why so many of the common place items we bought at the store were made in other countries.
In 2016 I voted for the first time. Somewhere in that cycle I found the Treehouse, but I think it was after my state primary, because I didn’t vote since I viewed Rubio, Cruz, and Trump as good candidates. After Trump jumped to the lead in the polls immediately after coming down that escalator, I saw his vision and style could be a winning one. But the Treehouse has focused my attention much more than my previous wanderings on the internet had.
For me it was 2012. I had just quit my job and had a lot of time on my hands. Locally, the story was George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin. The thing in the reporting that caught my eye and ears was “white Hispanic” I was like what?? Also, they kept showing pics of a young Trayvon when we knew he was 17. So I googled Zimmerman and this site popped up and I clicked on the link and the rest is history.
Before 2012, I did alot of research on 9/11 not sure why just bored lurking on the internet and read all the books I could find on it. That was probably the spark.
Then Obamacare forced me to pay for something that was not good coverage and I could not afford it. That just made me mad.
But Zimmerman/Martin was the awakening in full force thanks to this site.
I keep thinking of things lol. I attended Arizona State University in the 2000’s and I had an ethics class and the professor blamed 9/11 on the United States because of all the atrocities we committed around the world and I was like what?? I think I actually argued with him. I was very distraught. It was the only college class I did not get an A in, he gave me a B. That may have been the beginning of my research on 9/11.
George was one of my moments too. The “news” actually changed his picture to make him appear whiter.
During the seventies as Nixon was under assault I sensed something wasn’t right. JFK’s assassination followed by Vietnam clearly made me aware we were living in a country that had wasn’t the shining star we all thought or were being told it was. I remember telling my children in the eighties that they would look back at those times as something they would never experience again. We have been going through a revolution since the 60’s and the country will never be the same. “The Die is casted” and no amount of wishing can turn back the clock. The country is divided into tribes. The largest tribe is absent in the daily dialogue. The second largest is the revolutionaries on the Left. What remains is the smallest tribe. Will God bring forth another Moses to lead us into the desert?
So I’ve read a few pages of comments so far. So many people had an awakening with 9/11. Honestly, I have never questioned it, but I no longer naive enough to take any recorded history at face value. I’m unlikely to do a deep dive into 9/11 because I’m fairly sure it’ll depress me.
I was raised in a Republican household and conservative values always made sense to me. I viewed Democrats as emotional, lacking in common sense but always willing to fight for whatever their misguided cause of the day might be.
I often wondered (starting with GHW Bush) why Republicans felt it necessary to “rise above” and/or “not dignify” these fights when it was so obvious R’s were bleeding support by continuing the “high road” approach. They always seemed to allow media and opposition frame the debate/fight. It never made sense how the party which possessed evidence based/historical facts, morality and the Constitution could somehow unwittingly conceded so much ground.
When Obama came around and then suddenly we’re strongly warned by MSM and even our (R) leaders ; “Better not call attention to or ask questions regarding O’s questionable upbringing, grooming and ties to Radicals/Terrorist or you’re a racist!” – That’s when I knew my party did not “take the high road“. They “took a dive“.
They pretended to fight while all the time they were collaborators.
September 11. Our nation was attacked, and the people on TV (Katie Couric) asked something to the effect of “why do they hate us,” my visceral response was, “who cares?” Only the so-called “conservative” blogs were offering diagnoses of the situation that were remotely in touch with reality. That led to other questioning of “what else is not consistent” with the narrative story told…
Perot’s presidential run because he said what a lot of people thought about our political class. The raid in Waco Tx on the Branch Davidians compound. Fake news and politicians have ruined this country.
I would have to say my epiphany had to be the outcome of the 1992 election. I had voted for the Democrat for President all of my life and I was dissatisfied with George H W Bush because he would not finish the job of taking out Saddam Hussein after he started it. I was tired of the USA going to war and ending up dragging their butts back home because our politicians wanted to control the wars they got us into. I was a Democrap but I always believed you should never go to war unless you planned to destroy your enemy and win it first. I voted for Clinton because I thought Perot was another super rich clown who wanted to dabble in politics so he could make his big issue, supposedly education, come out his way.
Then it happened to me. Immediately after winning rthe election, Clinton began to choose his Cabinet. Problem was, his Cabinet choices mostly came from among the Communist wing of the Democrat Party. They were the worst cadre of despicable people I had seen since the Weather Underground was at their height in the 1970s. That Clinton and his wife were cozy with that crowd was a chilling thought for me! I began to read whatever I could find that would help me to understand where the Communist cause stood in the USA and how it was formed. I was taken clear back to the Labor Union movements during the Industrial Revolution before the 20th Century began. The Communist Party USA hadn’t start working to infiltrate our Federal Government by then, but the formation of the Communist Apparatchiks was well established. I became alarmed that these Apparatchiks were operating under the noses of the leaders of our Country and were continuing to methodically gain control of our institutions even after the fall of the Soviet Communist Empire. Things have gotten continually worse because instead of risk their own reputations and political positions, the Republicans decided to ignore the elephant in their midst. The institutions began to topple, most apparently the Education system and the information system (mainstream media at that time). I continued to search for information that could tell me how the Communists were succeeding even at a time when most Americans still hated the idea of Communism. In 2005, I finally got around to reading an autobiography called “Witness” by Whittaker Chambers because I realized by then that our economy was being taken over by the Chinese Communist Party and the evidence was already undeniable that our wealthiest corporations were becoming completely compromised.
I have never hated an American President until the Communist fraud, Barack Hussein Obama, was installed as our President. The balance of power is now decidedly on the Communist side and the greatest political experiment in history is now being systematically replaced by Totalitarianism and we will pay a terrible price for our former ignorance. I am now getting old, but I hate the future my son’s and their families will have to endure. Why would a six generation struggle for power ever be abandoned by our leftist enemies. I was once a Democrat, but I was never a Collectivist, and what remains of the Repug Party is the pathetic remaining political barrier to the demise of our Republic.
I WAS going to vote for Perot and hit convinced I would be “wasting my vote” so I voted for Clinton and what ensued at least woke me up to the Democrat party.
Obama first election forced me to join Twitter in 2009. They bragged about using Twitter to mobilize voters and get the message out. After Obama 2nd election. I had chalked the first term up to the 1st black president fever. But I had faith the American people would not give him a 2nd term. It was then I became seriously concerned something was wrong with the elections.
I agree, I read that there were more votes for Obama than there were people in many districts. I knew thing weren’t right then when Trump got in the Russia, Russia hoax. I never believed than hooey. The man never had an honest chance to govern with Mueller, etc…

Sure. Because the request was so ambiguous. If SD put up a post asking, “How’s it going with you?”, he could get 5k comments.
Your sarcasm is not at top level today.
Mikey, I understand your contrarian mindset, but do you have to be rude about our host?
Mikey’s jealous.
I’ve given this a lot of thought…and my moment is going to sound utterly ridiculous. Nevertheless…
When I moved overseas for two decades which in hindsight I now realize were the last Halcyon days I would ever see, my education began…one which I didn’t get at university. Living in another place offers that education if one is willing to learn. And learn I did.
Within a week of arriving back to the land of my birth, it became clear to me, as I’ve said before many times on this site, I did not return to the same country I left. Something was off…and not in a small way. For me it was visceral.
I went into a pharmacy to purchase OTC cold tablets. When I paid for them, suddenly I was confronted with having to fill out paperwork and had to provide my driver’s licence for verification of who I was….as if I were buying a controlled substance. It was a shock.
I told you it was a small thing. But in fact was huge. Because I knew that sort of invasive controlling pettiness was indicative of more of the same on every level leading up to a despotic government which mandated it. What next, I asked myself.
And now we know. Boy, do we ever. That was the moment I put into practice everything my education abroad taught me.
I read voraciously, here and elsewhere, I analyze, I use my eyes to look further than this country, and underneath the moss covered rocks we are supposed to not look under.
I wish so fervently I had not been right that first week back. Nothing is static. Everything changes because of course it does.
But I was not wrong, and this grieves me more than I have capacity to put into words.
May Almighty God please not withdraw His grace from this nation, and in His mercy be with us as we try to reclaim what is ours and which was stolen. And may all His blessings abundantly rest with all who makes it possible on this site to know we are not alone.
Amen Betsy
💕
That’s not ridiculous, Betsy, try harder. 🙂
chuckling
I have been to several countries over the last 30 0dd years, as many have including you, and understand the perspective you outlined.
As for G_D’s grace, many individuals are covered by this, and it will not be withdrawn because of admitting the Cross is enough, but does this Nation, Our Nation, really deserve it? His timing is not ours, His plans are not ours, and the future is not ours, except to react to what is before us and to oppose Evil in whatever form that may present. Which is not always easy to determine. This is not critical of you or anyone else, just typing out loud.
😁…
Your reply, Grog, is almost word for word what I have posted so many times.
I do not take anything you said as criticism. And of course I do recognize that His plan is so purposeful and intricate, it is not humanly possible to divine it. We are given a choice, however, on which side to take up arms, if I may phrase it like that.
Archbishop Vigano, whose voice is a ballast for me as it is for so many others, has spelled out over many essays and in so many videos the exact state of affairs. And he has meticulously outlined in terms anyone can understand why now is the time for choosing.
“If it is not in God’s time, nothing can force it.
If it is in God’s time, nothing can stop it.”
And it will come. One day at a time we take it, standing to serve in whatever way we can, with deep faith, trust, patience, knowing He is doing better things than we can hope or pray for. He’ll let us know when…
Blessings, Grog.
Blessings to you also.
Gratefully received, and I thank you.
Paul Simon sez:
“…God only knows and God makes His plan
The information’s unavailable to the mortal man
We’re working our jobs, collecting our pay
and believe we’re gliding down the highway
when in fact we’re slip-sliding away…”
Retired military officer, Vietnam vet. Went into military in mid 60’s believing in GOD and THE MISSION. Started getting suspicious during H.W. Bush years when he was saying things about the economy which clearly were not true. I penned myself a note “Who is really running the government?” I was traveling with a 3 star general during he Clinton years and he said “Global warming is BS, they are cherry picking the data. They get their numbers from airports where there is as lot of heat from the pavement and this skews the data. Global warming has been going on since the last ice age and is a good thing.” I looked into that and he was correct. I wondered how so many credible? scientists could be wrong. “ Why doesn’t someone contradict this BS?” I guess this was my AH-HA moment.
I reread 1984 George Orwell “Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.”
Brave New World Aldus Huxley “One believes things because one has been conditioned to believe them.” and Animal Farm George Orwell “ “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others” , I found that these were not just literature but prophecy.
I began to notice that MSM always had the same stories and even the same words to falsely describe events I was privy to. It was clear that MSM was marching to someone’s drummer—not the truth.
I no longer watch TV and I get my news from sources I trust like https://theconservativetreehouse.com/ . Donald Trump is our only hope, but the corruption at all levels of government will impede him from making all the changes needed. I DO NOT TRUST MY GOVERNMENT. Too many lies to even list.
Who is really running the government? I still do not know but I suspect it is a group of global Oligarchs who have their annual meeting at DAVOS. I believe their mission is to maintain control of the world governments, increase their individual wealth, reduce world population, and transition into a “One World Government” where the citizens have no say.
What does the future hold? Read Genesis 18 and 19 KJV about Sodom and Gomorrah. I’m surprised that GOD has been so tolerant. Murder of children in the womb and newly born, surgery on children to change their sex before they even know what sex is. Starting and pursuing wars and murdering thousands in the pursuit of profit. Just to name a few.
What can we do? PRAY, stay locked and loaded and ready to support a new revolution when we have a leader.
In 9th grade Chemistry, my professor, had just left the University over Affirmative Action and refusing to pass prereq nursing students who earned E’s and the University demanded they receive passing grades. He felt if a nurse couldn’t do basic math with chemistry they could kill someone.
He taught me about an agenda coming that would try and force a narrative of the earth warming. He explained it will all be manipulated lies. That was 1971….. Everything he taught me was correct.
Talk about a redpilled professor. Liberalism cost him his career because he wouldn’t cheat or lie. But he took great care of us in HS. Phenomenal Chemistry professor.
You should say his name.
