California Representative Kevin McCarthy finally succeeded on the 15th ballot during the overnight hours of Friday to Saturday. Mr McCarthy ultimately prevailed with 216 votes after six conservatives switched their votes to present. This lowered the threshold for a majority vote and essentially reversed their prior opposition. Their change followed 14 other holdout Republicans who flipped their votes to McCarthy during the 12th ballot and Andy Harris (R-Md.), switching to McCarthy on the 13th.
After Speaker Kevin McCarthy was sworn into office, he delivered a speech to the entire House.

Thanks for the correction. You’re right, the majority party, not the full house votes for rules. (For the previous 117th Congress, the Democrats, the majority party voted in their rules package.) What about the vote threshold needed zurizara1? I have been hearing a majority vote, is that true?
The majority party voting not the full house changes the math — a majority of 222 GOP members is 111 +1 = 112 need to vote in favor assuming a majority is what is needed.
So 111 can vote against it and the rules still pass. We know 20 will vote yes. Just need another 92 to vote yes.

I hope they kick all the Democrats off the committees and don’t let them have a voice for anything. It’s time we start getting back at the Democrats do what they do and I don’t mean cheat.
The rule changes have to be voted on by the entire house. What McCarthy agreed to was a framework, which doesn’t carry much weight especially when you’ve already got RINO members of the caucus (Tony Gonzales) already coming out and saying they’re going to vote against it.

You got any ideas about why 35 Congressmen were played by the other 400 and how they could have prevented it? It looked to me like it a was a miracle that they could have accomplished anything. It is a slim possibility that what they did could change the whole way legislation has been written, here in the 21st Century. Not a bad week of badly needed work by a tiny minority of the House, I think. You cannot win the title of ‘Dog Catcher’ unless you can show that you are the only person worthy of that title. I will be optimistic, at least until after McCarthy has had a chance to make good on his promises.

When you know you can’t win the big prize, a MAGA Patriot as Speaker, you take all that you can get in the form of firm commitments enforced by leverage and live to fight for even more on another day. On Monday the full House votes on whether to approve whatever rules package is put forward by McCarthy. A majority must approve.
Loopholes that come to mind:
(1) McCarthy betrays all or some of what conservatives think he promised and puts forward a rules package without any or without many of the desired changes. —No recourse. Takes a majority vote to get rid of a Speaker, not ever happening.
(2) McCarthy puts forward a rules package that contains 100% of asked for changes. But the House votes it down. Otherwise known as the Schumer-Manchin play.
Or, it could be that a few of the changes will be supported by the House, which would be a great accomplishment by our badly outnumbered heroes.
Maybe a few that benefit the Globalist, but I doubt the ones that truly benefit Americans will be approved.
Sadiy I also doubt that anything will be done about Jan 6, the Ukraine money laundering, the pork contained in the last bill.

There is a Dec 10 letter that outlines in detail the 20 holdouts solutions. They very clearly articulated what they wanted to achieve, how, why. The MSM and much of right wing media obfuscated and twisted and generally gaslighted in order to block the public from knowing the solutions this group was trying to implement.
At root of all the changes they wanted to make was to return the House to the way it operated before the Uniparty took it over and give back power to the people and their representatives.
Chip Roy and others did do the rounds of the media to lay ou the issue of the Uniparty hold on Congress and the solutions they were trying to implement. But the firehose blast of gaslighting narrative was immense, from nearly every quarter.
Here’s just one change the 20 holdouts pushed for –they wanted to eliminate the trillion dollar, thousands of pages, Omibus bills that are rushed thru and no one knows what’s in them.
Instead they wanted to return to the historical tradition of individual bills dedicated to a specific topic and individual bills for funding each part of governmeent –prevents all sorts of pork and gives back control to fight one issue without being blamed for jeopardizing a monster omnibus bill. They also wanted a minimum of 72 hours before a bill went for a vote to give time for members to actually read the bill.

Why do so many on our side seem to not know what the 20 holdouts were trying to accomplish?
We know the media lies its head off, and I include Fox, Hannity, Beck, and as we’ve seen this week most of right wing media too.
So why are some MAGA or conservatives still believing whatever narrative is being spun —- and in this instance asking why don’t the 20 offer any solutions when they in fact have done just that and in strategic, detailed fashion?
Maybe it comes down to people not knowing where to go to get unbiased info? Of course CTH is a central resource, but perhaps we need to also start sharing news sources that Treepers find trustworthy –after this week we should be able to separate the wheat from the chaff.
That has been done before here, but not in an organized way that we can go to the archives and make rounds with every day. I seen reference to:

Up late last night watching the votes, I was reminded of the summer of 2020 when I was up late every night watching the nightly demonstrations and riots live streamed by citizen journalists, and restreamers who performed the tasks of producers, monitoring multiple streams and putting up the best ones for their viewers. Every night they chanted the same chants, one of which was “This is what democracy looks like.”
Aaaaaach. Nope. Shattered windows, burned businesses, projectiles and bags of urine hurled at police and anyone who objected. THAT was a mob. THAT was what a mob looked like.
THIS was what democracy looks like. All week. Grinding it out. Occasional temper flares subdued by those near them. Whether you agree with the outcome, THIS was what democracy looks like.

RINO legislative proposals can now be kept off the floor: The Dems vote against everything GOP, and the new trio can join them – for totally different reasons of course – thus stopping future stinking legislative proposals in their tracks. This is a good outcome.

I reminded her that though the national elite ‘chattering class’ continue to belittle her…that we are hers, and that she is ours! In our high snowy mountain valleys…we are damn proud of our US Representative! I believe she will hold the line along with her cohorts…it is your job to move YOUR representative to join the fight with them…GET IT DONE!
IIRC, Boebert and five others voted ‘present’ in the final vote, reducing the threshold for election. A vote for ‘other’ named person would have, IMO, been ‘holding the line’. It was late and my mind was fuzzy at that point so apologies if she wasn’t part of the ‘present’ group.

I really thought we were in for a long protracted battle for the seat.

President Trump exposed the swamp to be much worse than ANYONE could have imagined.
The only win here is for the swamp dwellers. The corruption and depravity continue. The American people are truly under attack by the enemy.

One of the most frustrating parts of watching conservatives negotiate, whether with dems or rhinos, is that the conservatives always start from a reasonable position. The fact that they got everything they asked for just shows they didn’t ask for enough.

With Trump taking a personal hand in lobbying for the swamp creature, the outcome became foregone. The real victory was the fight of the Freedom Caucus members to swing the pendulum away from the Speaker-as-Emperor back to the Speaker-as-Chief-Legislator and the highlighting of how far we’ve moved away from responsible, representative government. That was a fight begun 15 ballots ago and it will continue on Monday and throughout the 118th Congress.
And a secondary, and equally in my opinion, benefit to the whole sanguinary drama was to flush the denizens of Conservative, Inc out into the open for all patriots to see. From His Windy-ness the insufferable Hannity, to the faux-servative Newsmax, more patriots were shown that when push comes to shove, the Swamp does not reside only in Washington. That exposure, along with the heroics of the Freedom fighters, was worth the price of admission.
I suspect the big winner after this will be DeSantis. Because supporting McCarthy has given many in the MAGA base the the impression – not justified, but anyway – that Trump 2023 is a weak pro-Swamp RINO. It just seems like there is no rational reason why that couldn’t have easily been avoided. Add this to the now mile-high “unexplained” pile.
But we KNOW DeSantis is a pro swamp RINO.

I voted for MTG thinking she was different, earlier living in FL I voted for Rubio in the Tea Party revolution of 2010. Repubs just Never Deliver, a sad Fact. Trump was different in 2016 but not in 2022 or 2024 If he even get the nomination.

You are right about that H&HC.
One thing more and more people are beginning to understand is that we must fight this huge and terrible battle against our Countries Enemy ourselves.
We can not expect any elected official to carry all the water, it will just never happen.
We also need to think very hard about the idea of expecting a leader to save us coming from the elected members of the DC Swamp.
Probably not going to happen either.
But it does not mean that we can not get the job done.

Having been a reader and poster here for several years my opinion/expectations for Speaker McCarthy-Luntz can only go in one direction and that is up! There is nothing he can do or say or won’t do or say that will lower my opinion/expectations one iota! Hopefully he will rise to the occasion and surprise me and so many other posters here having severe doubts about what just happened! God help us! Hosanna!
I’m glad it took 15 rounds. We all knew he’d be the speaker, but at least, in theory for now, we (freedom loving types) got some concessions that would not have otherwise surfaced.
It will take awhile to wrestle control of the government from the Uniparty. Every inch of ground taken will be fought tooth and nail. It won’t be easy, but it can be done.
If successful, perhaps our great granchildren will reap the benefits of the foundations patriots lay at the altar of our future today.
A little disappointed in Harris. Probably did it to save his skin. Maryland is a left wing bastion. Baltimore metro area and suburbs of DC. Only 2 or 3 conservative regions left, and the state legislature gerrymandered them endangered. The only conservative governor we had, served 1 term. He was voted out with a 60% approval rating.

All this is well and good. . . maybe. However, the elephant in the room is still ignored. WDC lobbyist control billions. We have no idea where that money goes, but a good guess would be into our mostly corrupt politicians’ pockets. We’ve got to stem this avalanche of cash if we are to start solving the real problems we face. Lobbying firms now do most of the work traditionally done by congress. Therein lies the problem. These firms are loyal to those who pay them, not the American people. To truly save our Republic, this has to be changed.
Platitudes. There is no there there. I hope I am wrong, but I do not believe he will push the rule changes or that the swamp he represents will pass them. I also do not believe he will actively pursue shinning the light on the evil acts perpetrated by the Biden Administration. He will likely find ways to appear to be pursuing this effort while undercutting it.
I would expect customs and traditions to be fungible in what is to come, like committee nominations for a start, never mind rules changes. The Uniparty will never compromise their own interests. That’s not remarkable, rather human nature in power and domination dynamics. History has recorded it throughout time.
Milquetoast McCarthy won’t live up to his end of the bargain. He’ll renege on his deal with the 30-piecers from the Freedom Caucus and do as he pleases.
Nothing embarrasses these heathens anymore. If that was me I’d be thoroughly embarrassed that I had to force people to like me—-creepy people.

Any negative reaction about what happens in the House is ignoring whatever leverage Our President has on McCarthy, which I’d be willing to bet has little to do with whatever happens in the House. Given the inevitability that very few GOPe Reps were ever going to vote for a MAGA Speaker, much less anywhere close to the required number to elect him, what we have is an excellent initial list of top priority candidates to be primaried. We also have enormous attention being paid to the previously almost completely ignored House. So far, McCarthy is saying all the right things but, as they say, Trust But Keep The Leverage At The Ready….
