Day #4 of the House effort to elect a new speaker will continue today with no one asking why only 20 members want to change the rules. The rules are problematic for 20+ members who have refused to vote through eleven ballots for McCarthy, which begs the question. Why do 200 republicans accept giving McCarthy all the power to determine legislative business?
The House returns to session for what is expected to be McCarthy’s 12th attempt to win the gavel. According to Politico, “the GOP leader and his leadership team convened a conference call Friday morning to update members on the status of negotiations, hours after he appeared to gather some momentum late Thursday by hashing out specific concessions to hardline members of the GOP conference — offers that his allies were hopeful would move votes in his direction.
But enormous uncertainty lingered Friday morning, as members of the freedom Caucus had yet to commit their support to McCarthy and a handful of other holdouts continued to signal their opposition to him. Absences on the GOP side of the aisle could scramble things further, with McCarthy backer Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) predicting at least three during Friday’s likely balloting. WATCH:

I do not believe there’s anything wrong with negotiating and attempting to make a deal with McCarthy. I think the viewing conservative folks have to realize this isn’t per se about McCarthy, rather its about the structure of the leadership (the leaderships power) and the rules regarding the regular members of congress. The Founding Fathers didn’t create our leadership positions with a single person in mind, understanding that over the decades many folks will retain these positions of leadership and many of these individuals will suffer from the ills of human nature our Founding Fathers felt so strongly about. So, I don’t think it is wise that we lock in on –its McCarthy vs the 20, rather its the 20 vs. leadership that over the decades has consolidated power amongst themselves and a better system of checks and balances needs to be employed –such that it doesn’t matter whose in leadership, the system of checks and balances keeps them in check and balance. If you have the same rules that permeate the house at it stands now and you vote Jim Jordan in, then you have solved nothing. My take is don’t miss the forest through the trees.

I believe they say any deal will be in writing. If/when McCarthy breaks the agreement my understanding is there is only one recourse –to call a vote to forece McCarthy vacate the speakership. This enforcement option would assemble 435 members to vote on whether to force McCarthy out of the speakership role — it would require 218 votes in favor. So in practical terms that means no abiltiy to enforce the deal within the House rules.
Can you explain more how lawyers could keep McCarthy in line with any deal? Not sure this applies to House business –think it may be outside the purview of courts and lawyers. Interesting question though.
That is true, but what you are insinuating is that the general membership of the house has no authority what so ever, that any agreement ever made can simply be chucked out with the bath water right after saying ‘yes, I’ll agree to that’. Ok, so don’t change any rules of the house and elect someone other than McCarthy, say its a real conservative minded person. Looking at their faces (or in the case of Gosar, practically fleeing from the Chamber), I think the flippers succumbed to the stick more than the carrot.
The ‘concessions’ are window dressing statements IMO. They received nothing yet. Which means they likely never will.

All these concessions/deals/rule changes/committee assignments/investigations can be ran by anybody. Why Kevin? That’s the question. The answer seems obvious and it has nothing to do what’s best for the American taxpayers in this country who want a voice and seat at the table. The founding fathers were men of great courage. I have a guess. They see McCarthy as a better guarantee of the big money donors than anyone else that might have been interested.

The fight never ends, this isn’t about McCarthy, it isn’t about the individual. It is about the system that has been built (or rather corrupted). This is the first time is a long time that anyone has had the guts to make some fundamental changes to the house rules. You are in a war for your nation one battle after another and its a war that never ends, never ever and ever. As long as you have people roaming this earth, the battle for your freedoms and liberty lives in perpetuity. Its akin to the Battle of the Wilderness, both sides kicked the shit out of each other. Grant told his leadership to get his army ready to march to re-engage Lee at dawn. His leadership told him that the men are exhausted and Grant said so are Lee’s men. I urge everyone to read about all the Great Generals-Leaders from Alexander the Great, to Caesar, Hannibal, Grant, Churchill, Patton. They always initiated the offensive, they got the enemy on the run, always be on the offensive, keep taking the fight to enemy. An army running backwards is not an army. Now is the time to keep the pressure on and push the offensive. Never let McCarthy even breath a breath of ‘UniParty air’.

I agree with your logic, however I disagree that the individual doesn’t matter. All these fundamental changes could and should be agreed upon by whoever holds the gavel. Mccarthy has done nothing to prove he’s worthy to be the leader of the new Republican Party trying to make change. The maga patriots holding the line are the face of change, not Mccarthy…IMO.
This is just putting lipstick on the same pig to make it prettier. Mccarthy represents everything that’s wrong with this country. Mccarthy hasn’t earned the right to lead anything. The fight goes on, but only when the troops trust their leadership. Who could ever trust this traitor?
