Day #4 of the House effort to elect a new speaker will continue today with no one asking why only 20 members want to change the rules. The rules are problematic for 20+ members who have refused to vote through eleven ballots for McCarthy, which begs the question. Why do 200 republicans accept giving McCarthy all the power to determine legislative business?
The House returns to session for what is expected to be McCarthy’s 12th attempt to win the gavel. According to Politico, “the GOP leader and his leadership team convened a conference call Friday morning to update members on the status of negotiations, hours after he appeared to gather some momentum late Thursday by hashing out specific concessions to hardline members of the GOP conference — offers that his allies were hopeful would move votes in his direction.
But enormous uncertainty lingered Friday morning, as members of the freedom Caucus had yet to commit their support to McCarthy and a handful of other holdouts continued to signal their opposition to him. Absences on the GOP side of the aisle could scramble things further, with McCarthy backer Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) predicting at least three during Friday’s likely balloting. WATCH:

I worry about what will happen with the futures of those who did not support McCarthy. Even those who switched to McCarthy after the initial votes may eventually find that they will pay for not supporting him in the first place.
That should be one of the concessions demanded of McCarthy.
If they caved, who cares.
They (and by definition, their constituents) earned that.

And once in power, will he keep his word?
Silly questions. The 20 are putting their political careers on the line. They are taking risks, and expect to suffer some losses. Theirs will be either a first rumbling of a developing wave that will succeed in at least making some change in how things are done in Washington, or a whimper from a severely wounded animal, not yet dead, and far from well and alive facing consumption and eventually winding up in the belly of the beast.

NO
It is perfectly okay to lie, cheat and steal from an “infidel” as long as you support “those of the faith”.

in his hubris he places expressed loyalty to him as the criteria for endorsement. That only works if he’s signing the check. Oherwise, he sets himself up for betrayal while inadvertently aiding the enemy. Mitts Romney comes to mind among many others – including Kevin McCarthy.
Were he to look for some shred of integrity and history of consistency and competence in his endorsements and appointments, he and the nation today would be better off. Instead we have the outfall of Comey, Wray, Sessions, Barr, Dr. Oz, on and on.
I admire and appreciate much that Trump done for America. I see his unbridled ego, and his apparent inability to learn how to bring it under control as a chief executive when it comes to evaluating and deploying key personnel, as his Achilles’ heel.
It’s as if instead of asking “How good are you?” he asks “Do you love me?”
Some who do – such as General Flynn, also love America as he does and exhibit the aforementioned integrity and history of performance required to make America great again. Others, like Romney, Oz, and McCarthy, etc. are liars. Trump fails to see that and leaves their continuing destruction in his wake.
They are no longer voting for speaker. McCarthy will eventually be voted in. They are voting for the rules he agrees to use and the guarantees that he will not back down.
The key is likely the promise of who will be on the rules committee. They are the ones that will guarantee the result.
McCarthy will be speaker and McDaniel we be reelected as RNC Chair and all the “conservatives” and “republicans” will like they do best scratch their heads and say, “gee how did this happen?”
Out of 435 reps….this is the best ‘they’ could do.

The really scary possibility is “Yes, it is the best they can do.” There may be no Republican in the House of Representatives that wants the job and can get more votes than McCarthy. That is not a judgement of McCarthy. That is a judgement of the House Republican caucus.
We need to realize that the Republicans in the House are nowhere near as conservative as we are. A few are, but not enough.
So, yes, the best that we might get is KM as Speaker and rules that hold him in check guarded by a rules committee with enough conservatives to make it stick. That may be the closest thing to a “win” that we can get.

If reading The Last Refuge for years has taught me one thing it should be to never get my hopes up that something actually good for the country or it’s citizens will happen.

They got so many concessions to change the house process that most flip to McCarthy to put pressure on him to give the last of the concessions they need to win.
The concessions may be so big that the flips may be worth it. Basically what Gaetz said. If McCarthy is speaker it will be in a straight jacket.

Anyone could agree to the concessions, some of which were in place in the past until removed by Pelosi, not just Kevin. Looking beyond concessions, why not look for a Speaker who would be competent once sworn in? That leaves out Kevin.
