The issue is progressively running out of inexpensive fossil energy before we can build up the ability to produce synthetic oil using the next generation of nuclear energy.
This next generation of nuclear energy runs on existing stockpiles of nuclear waste and weapons suspended in molten salt. With this energy, we can produce hydrogen from water and capture CO2 from the environment to make a carbon neutral synthetic oil via the F-T process.
Thus this pathway utilizes our existing investments in distribution and utilization. Look no further than CA when they told electric car owners not to plug in. There are significant future fossil energy inputs in order to build out the new energy sources (which must be fossil-free), distribution systems (wires, made from mined copper etc.), and utilization (batteries). These energy investments dwarf whatever energy savings electric cars have over existing gas power cars.
In short, the problem is running out inexpensive of carbon-based energy before we make this shift; not the false narrative of climate change and CO2.

Whenever I calculated solar replacing electricity, the results were a ridiculous number of panels that would (at best) cover half of our (already modest) electricity needs. To mount on the ground so we could clear snow without breaking our necks on a roof, would leave no yard to enjoy. The cost (even if DIY’d) greatly outstrips the cost per kWh (which is why they want to make electricity super-expensive). It doesn’t start to pay for itself for decades and decades (after I’m long gone). And it doesn’t last but 25 years. It just doesn’t make economic sense.
We’re getting 2 major solar farms in our community. Although green activists are celebrating, that former farm will not be used for food crops now. Solar is a space hog.
Solar should only be placed on existing structures like roofs and parking lots, never on farmland.
Both my sister and I have rooftop solar and our fixed payments are becoming progressively far less expensive than what our electrical bill would be without them. These new panels are, lead-free, 21% efficient, and have +40 year life span to will not drop below 90% of their original capacity over that time period.
I have a Nissan Leaf (150K miles, no maintenance except new tires, batteries are at 70% of new capacity) and the cost energy cost equivalence to a 30mpg gas car is $0.78/gallon. I can also set the charging timer to only go on when we have surplus solar, thus putting no strain on the grid.
There are niche applications for this technology that pencil out right now, but there are a number of critical things that will never be practically addressed without carbon-based fuels or will take more energy to build up than they save in the long run.
