Which brings to mind my first encounter at approximately 17 yrs old, with 2 members of what is knows today as “trans”.
I was an exceptional cashier for the Grand Union Company and they shipped me all over our tri-cities area when needed. Back in those days a cashier really had to think and do math in their “heads” because the machines they used only added the price of each item sold and many items were 6/$1.00, etc. People stood in lines with grocery carts over-flowing and the cashier also had to know how to pack a “square paper bag” that did not tear, or fall apart at the bottom (sometimes we did have enough bag-boys but not often).
Normally, a cashier smiled and welcomed the customer and went straight to work , never looking up until it was time to collect the money and normally make change, using the brain again (OMG!) and counting back the change to equal the total amount given.(YIKES!)
Well, it was a busy Friday night, I was working alone, quickly and accurately ringing up all those items from one customer to the next and not noticing who was the last in a long line…..when, all of a sudden I looked up, and there they were…2 (not 1) but 2 men dressed in women’s attire with the worst looking hairdos and make-up I had ever seen in my life (actually, they would have been great for a Halloween night but it wasn’t October!).
I was so shocked and prided myself in always keeping a serious, business-like poker face (and I had to use the bathroom really bad)..I was so stunned but I couldn’t show it and proceeded to give them a total, gave them the accurate change, finished packing their bags and had to get out of there as quickly as possible! Lucky for me, others saw the same and came to my rescue so I could take a “break”…
When I went home to tell my Mom, she looked at me and said,” well, you just saw 2 transvestites.” ” Now, I will tell you all about them.”

When I was in Basic in the mid 1980’s, we had an individual in our company who was rather light in the combat boots. He refused to mop floors like everybody had to, and cussed out a Drill Sergeant.
He was gone from the unit within 3 days.
60’s were a little tougher. General harassment would be a mild term, DS would be aware, then light boots would spend a day in the brig, (usually with enough time for laceration and dental repairs), processed out and left at the gate. Sometime life gets lonely. Discharge was dishonorable/insubordination.
Same at my time, except for the brig part. It was made clear he had until 4pm to clear off post and make his own way home.
I recall my husband telling of a similar incident(s) when in basic training (during Viet Nam War).
All he said, “Well, we were all called into (whatever the room was …don’t recall the term) and the doctor came in.
“He told us (in formation) to drop our pants and bend over. Then he walked down each row until he reached the end.
He told us to pull up our pants and back to barracks.”
As the story goes, that night at supper (or whatever they called it)..some were missing and no one said anything, just continued eating and nothing was said later that night in the barracks.
And that was how it was dealt with at that point in our country’s history.
