Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

✝️ DAILY DEVOTIONAL, May 30, 2022
Good morning Dan. Amen.
Good morning, Levi💖
Thank you, Dan for this particular Spurgeon sermon. I’d like to add this from CS Lewis, which struck me forcefully…
“If God forgives us we must forgive ourselves. Otherwise it’s like setting up ourselves as a higher tribunal than Him.”
A very hard thing to do, forgiving ourselves, when we are so aware we have sinned. But I believe Mr Lewis was not wrong.
All blessings to you, Dan.
Good morning Bet, I’m so thankful that our debt was paid by the precious blood of the Lamb.
So grateful, G🙏💖 Slate wiped clean. Trying every day to be worthy of the sacrifice.

I just finished a wonderful collection of stories called “The Personality of the Cat”, and ordered several $5 copies to give away.
Thanks for the daily pics!
One more . . .
😎 nice Garrison ❤️
Peace, a quiet mind and a smile!!
Beautiful selections 🥰
Thank you and sweet dreams to you both!! ❤️
Thanks, Cat. Be well . . . 🙂
Good morning, Garrison💖 The winds, they be a blowing’ unremittingly my in my neck of the Texas woods. Day after day. How about you? Never known a season like this. Take care, my friend. Blessings always🙏
Humid and hot. This is when i start waiting for October . . . 🙂
I beat you to THAT!! Anticipating that which is now here, counting how many months of it we must endure, I started.looking forward to a hopefully cooler October back in January.😉
It’s been blowing 20 mph here constantly. We are on a hilltop so we get an extra dose. At least the garden gets tough. 😍
We lived in a long deep valley in Wales. When the winds came, we’d anxiously go out each morning praying that no slate shingles had been ripped from our roof.
We were so low down from the two lane main road that often when we drove home Royal Air Force jets screaming down that valley were well below us, so we could see the tops of the planes for a brief second or two before they disappeared. Unlike the ginormous transporter planes which also flew over our house. They lumbered slowly up the valley so we could watch them in awe, wondering how they didn’t fall out of the sky. Good times.
Morning Garrison, I am ready for October to come tomorrow.
Yep. Crisp, cool mornings. Hill Country drivin’ weather! 🙂
Good morning, Cat💖 Blessings to you, girl🤗
Good morning Cat! Have a blessed day. ❤️
Dedicated to our friends and relatives who served in the armed forces and made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms for future generations.
Many, especially the younger ones, never had a chance to come back to America and raise a family.
God bless all of them and may they rest-in-peace.

Good morning Cactuc. What an outstanding jingle. Thanks for sharing it. Cheers!
Haven’t heard this David Ball song in years. I cried the first few times I heard it. Great songwriting. Thanks for posting.
Good ‘un Cactus!
Here’s a few words about the 2nd Amendment and gun ownership. What we’re witnessing today is a moral panic reaction to the Buffalo and Uvalde spree killings. We’ve seen this movie before. If the behavior of the spree killers seems familiar, that’s because it is all too familiar. If the response of sundry talking heads, gun control activists —“DO SOMETHING!!”—it’s all like watching a 3rd rate bad movie that you’ve seen multiple time before. Everything is predictable. This is where we came in.
Tonight I watched Sen. candidate Mo Brooks deliver a brillian defense of the fundamental intent of the 2nd Amendment to FNC’s Sandra Smith. He very cogently, very politely pointed out that our founders wrote the 2nd to provide the citizenry (that’s us folks) with the ability to take back our country from the rule of tyrants.
I am now a HUGE FAN of MO BROOKS!!!
The 2nd Amendment is about providing an armed citizenry with the rights and ability to defend themselves/ourselves against tyranny. The best way to do this, our founders knew, is to insure that individual citizens have the right to arm themselves.
A popular gun-controller meme is that the AR 15 is a “weapon of war” and is not useful for hunting. Their assumption is that an armed citizenry is for . . . hunting? No, it isn’t. That wasn’t the intent of the 2nd Amendment at all.
Here’s a historical factoid. The citizen soldiers at Concord Bridge were armed with “long rifles”. They typically fired a .45 cal ball which, movng at 900 ft. per second, was accurate out to 300 yards. In 1775, this was a formidable “weapon of war”. In contrast, the British “Brown Bess” musket ws only accurate at 60 yards. The colonists sniped at the retreating British all the way back to Boston.
Claiming that an AR15 pattern rifle with a 30 round magazine is somehow inappropriate for private ownership directly contradicts the obvious intent of the 2nd. To defend against tyranny, armed citizens need to have access to “weapons of war”.
FACT: None of the firearms legally sold to the everyday citizen are “Assault Rifles”. An Assault Rifle by definition, is a rifle that has full automatic or 3 round burst capability. To legally own or sell any fully automatic firearm requires an expensive Class 3 Firearms License. Raised sights, detachable large capacity magazine, and bayonet stud, do not make a firearm an “Assault Rifle” without that full automatic or a 3 round burst capability.
On April 19, 1775 when British General Gates marched his troops out of Boston they had two objectives.
So “The Shot Heard Round the World” resulted from a British attempt to enforce gun control upon the colonists.
One more tackle of Fox, Smith and MSM global lies.
Smith stated that 2,000 Mules data has been fact checked and debunked, including by Reuters. Is the cell phone data purchased by TTV inaccurate? If so then how is it valid when used to imprison J6 attendees for being on Capitol grounds? Precisely where is the dividing line between accurate cell phone data and inaccurate cell phone data?
The collective evidence (cell phone and video) shows the cell phone owners delivering multiple ballots to multiple drop boxes. How do Reuters and the fake checkers explain away this evidence?
No matter WHO the people are on video, they are committing FELONIES by delivering the number of ballots shown. How do Reuters and fake checkers eliminate visual crimes in order to debunk the movie?
Last question. Why does anyone watch Fox News or even turn on a TV? It is nothing but a box of lies.
There are some of the Fox News folks that still have integrity. This doesn’t apply at all to the weekend crew, however.
This weekend, I read though certainly didn’t watch (cut the cord…bliss) Fox had the execrable Judith Miller on ranting about gun control. No pushback apparently. Fox has nailed its colours to the mast. No surprise given what the Murdoch boys and their far left wives are.
Who watched Fake News these days. Used to be my favorite almost only channel, now I never watch it unless Tucker is on.
I always preferred Fox Business channel. Still love Charles Payne, and loved Lou Dobbs before he was unjustly and unceremoniously ejected from the premises.
And in fact I was rather fond of Neil Cavuto. But then he had open heart surgery and I swear, when he came back they sent his doppleganger…a repulsive, hateful, addlebrained replacement. So that was that…cord cut…money and peace of mind saved.
I totally agree with your observation, Garrison. It was a matter of record in these pages (CTH 1.0) that I remarked several times that the FNC weekend crew was clearly anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, and their biased dishonesty had caused my wife and I to discontinue watching Fox over the weekends back in 2017 or 2018 at the latest. It wasn’t too long after that when we stopped watching Fox altogether.
BAM! @ Levi.
IIRC, it was Sandra Smith herself who, live on air, dissed millions of skeptical viewers the night of 3Nov20 when FOXNEWS was publicly upbraided for their grotesquely “early call” from the infamous Decision Desk.
I believe, that when network judgement was questioned, her on-air retort was “but we’ve already called it”, as if God, Himself, had weighed-in on the results.
Reflections of Greta Thunberg… “How dare they?”
Indeed, Sandra, HOW DARE WE QUESTION THE NETWORK’S CONDUCT & MOTIVES?
She’s the worst..
And now, Garrison, senile Biden has upped the ante. He wants to ban “high caliber” (his description) 9 mm handguns.
He has no idea what he’s talking about, as usual. There is no question he (they) want us completely disarmed. Completely. One weapon at a time. But they must be in a hurry to keep ticking off each weapon, a different one every day. Imbecile.
Good morning Garrison. Like you, I was very impressed by Mo’s refusal to back down to the outrageous LIES of Fox’s Smith. Yeah, he made me a fan as well while Smith confirmed my enmity of Fox. It boggles my mind how conservatives flock to watch their propaganda (I’ll give Tucker an exception).
God bless you and yours and God Bless America!
Morning Levi, I stopped watching Fox after that first debate where MeAgain Kelly tried to take down then candidate Trump.
And not too long after that I fired Directv.
Good morning Gramps. I remember that moment. Disgusting. Guess you learn faster than I. I quit Meghan that night but lingered with Fox maybe a couple of additional years before I walked away. I’ve always been a late bloomer but I get there.
Have yourself a great day, sir! Cheers!!!
We keep getting offers for the now late (but not lamented) DTV, asking us to sign up again. Not happening.
Joe LIES! He repeats his lie that when the 2nd Amendment was enacted, it was not legal for private citizens to own cannon. Completely false! Most of the cannon held by colonial militias were privately owned. Also, many merchant ships had cannon for protection…which enabled them to be quickly converted to “Naval Auxiliaries” by issuing “Letters of Marque” as was practiced at least through the War of 1812…and beyond.

Yes—But…!
Lord, I will follow You, but… —Luke 9:61
Suppose God tells you to do something that is an enormous test of your common sense, totally going against it. What will you do? Will you hold back? If you get into the habit of doing something physically, you will do it every time you are tested until you break the habit through sheer determination. And the same is true spiritually. Again and again you will come right up to what Jesus wants, but every time you will turn back at the true point of testing, until you are determined to abandon yourself to God in total surrender. Yet we tend to say, “Yes, but— suppose I do obey God in this matter, what about…?” Or we say, “Yes, I will obey God if what He asks of me doesn’t go against my common sense, but don’t ask me to take a step in the dark.”
Jesus Christ demands the same unrestrained, adventurous spirit in those who have placed their trust in Him that the natural man exhibits. If a person is ever going to do anything worthwhile, there will be times when he must risk everything by his leap in the dark. In the spiritual realm, Jesus Christ demands that you risk everything you hold on to or believe through common sense, and leap by faith into what He says. Once you obey, you will immediately find that what He says is as solidly consistent as common sense.
By the test of common sense, Jesus Christ’s statements may seem mad, but when you test them by the trial of faith, your findings will fill your spirit with the awesome fact that they are the very words of God. Trust completely in God, and when He brings you to a new opportunity of adventure, offering it to you, see that you take it. We act like pagans in a crisis— only one out of an entire crowd is daring enough to invest his faith in the character of God.

On this Memorial Day, we pray for those who courageously laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. May the examples of their sacrifice inspire in us the selfless love of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Bless the families of our fallen troops, and fill their homes and their lives with Your strength and peace.

She’s not fit for anything.
She should only be seen or heard by people already under the influence of Zofran.
A complete disgrace, Levi.
…and may I add, that’s a word she most definitely will not know, right along with the words “shame” or “honour”.

✟
“A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.”
Ecclesiastes 3:8 (KJV)
Thank You, Jesus, for blessings received and prayers answered!!!
I put this small but heartbreaking poem on the Memorial Day thread. It seems appropriate here as well, written by a young woman whose soldier fought in The Great War.
Lost Spring
When each new year brings forth new life
In fragrant mists of green;
When mating birds, and youth, and love
Through all the world are seen~~
When poppies splash their hearts’ bright blood
A round your cross they dance,
And Norman apple-blossoms blow,
It must be spring in France.
I know it must be spring in France
Because you’re lying there,
For since you left spring’s never come,
And it must be somewhere.
~~Marion Valentine~~
God rest the souls of all who have been lost in every war…and may He bless those who mourned and who are still mourning. 🙏
Have you ever been to any of the WWI and II battlefields, rah? My husband used to take people to the cemeteries there. All pristine and well cared for…sacred places when on seeing and remembering rip the heart out of you. This poem always goes right through me.
…and as we slog our way through what we are now, I can’t help thinking how utterly betrayed those who gave their lives have been. It makes this poem excruciatingly more poignant.
Edit: I posted this before I saw your post below. I see that you have visited those cemeteries.
Yes, quite a few of them. My unit was targeted in Europe during the cold war so I was there a total of about five years of my nearly 12 on active duty. I trained or received training in many West European countries and so for most my time was a few days to weeks. I missed Portugal (except the Azores which are a possession of Portugal and I passed through several times in transit) and Finland, but spent time in every other Western European country. I also spent a couple of days in Bermuda. Only put foot in Iceland when passing through.
So I have visited several of the battlefields in France including Normandy. I was all over the area where the Battle of the Bulge was fought. At Diekirch, Luxembourg and in East Berlin there were still a few buildings with bullet holes in them from WW II during the 80’s when I was there. When I was in Belgium two workers were killed when they hit a WW I gas shell on the WWI Flanders battlefield. That was same time that Chernobyl disaster occurred to give you an idea of the time frame.
The place I was stationed in during my 3 year tour over there was Flint Kassern, Bad Tolz Germany about 50 kilometers south of Munich. It was a huge quadrangle that was built by Hitler as an SS Officers training school. The walls still had the inset gun racks for the 8 mm Mausers. Sat in the same seats in the auditorium at that place where Himmler and Goebbels sat during the opening of that facility. It was a wonderful post. Best in Germany. Patton initially had his HQ there early on during the occupation.
The place was slated to be bombed 8 different times by the 8th Air Force during the war and every time the mission was weathered out and so it was captured intact. The Army flooded the bottom three underground floors due to their fear of booby traps. Every day that I walked to my team room which was in the first underground floor I passed over the impression of a boot with a hobnailed sole left by a worker when they were building the place. The emergency electrical power for the place was in a wooden building outside the quadrangle and was a diesel engine hooked to a generator that was exactly what was used in U-boats.
The US gave it back to the Germans and they promptly tore the quadrangle down, leaving only the main gate bordered by two towers, one of which is where I entered to go to my team room. They also left the SS officers canteen and the commanders house which were outbuildings.
I think what you don’t know about those areas and others historically is probably not worth knowing.
Every year during the November 11 commemorations in Britain ( their Memorial Day) there are parades all over. But in London at the Cenotaph there where giant wreaths of poppies are laid by the military brass, government officials, and members of the Royal Family, parades consisting of veterans who served in every war march solemnly by. And each year, when I lived there, the numbers of veterans from WWI (an amazing number of them) got smaller and smaller. If there is even just one left I’d be shocked. It was always a sad thing for me to see their numbers diminish. It will be the same for WWII vets now.
People who remember all too clearly what the horrors of those times were like. And generations which have come after them have no idea how horrid.
“Those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it.
Yet those who DO study history are doomed to stand by helplessly behold everyone else repeats it.”
Tragically true.
Oh what’s the use…. “helplessly BY”… autocorrect, curses be upon you!!!
No sweat. From now through June 6th I will be posting some history about Overlord as I have the chance.
Right now I’m taking a break from GIing the inside of the big truck. Getting close but still have a bit to do. Then it’s shower time, dinner time, and off to bed.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow, that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ.
AMEN.

Morning
Let us labour to enter into that rest. Heb. 4:11
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction: … strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Matt. 7:13, 14
The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. Matt. 11:12
Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you. John 6:27
Give diligence to make your calling and election sure: … for so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. II Pet. 1:10, 11
So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I Cor. 9:24, 25
For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Heb. 4:10
The Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. Isa. 60:19
J. Bagster
Good mornin all,
Up early because I need to go to bed early later today since I will be getting up at 02:00 Tuesday morning for my run up to Michigan and back.
I drove the big truck home when I got in on Friday because it needs a good spring cleaning on the inside. So that is my project today. The 2015 Freight Liner I drive has 601,000 miles on it and I have put about all of those miles on it. I figure that something less than 4,000 of those miles are not mine since I haven’t team driven in this truck much at all.
I have team driven in the trucks of others quite a bit since I got into that 2015 Freight Liner when it was new. I figure I have teamed in others trucks over 2 months of the time I have had this truck.
I had a Million miles driving a big truck right at the time I got this truck. So I figure I am probably somewhere around 1,800,000 miles total miles behind the wheel of a big truck. If things keep going as they have been I should break 2,000,000 sometime late next year or early in 2024. It is a milestone I would like to reach.
It’s quite an achievement to get to where your at, hope you make your goal.
Good morning rah. Damn that’s a lot of driving. I tacked on more than 1.5 million miles in my career but those were sitting in planes. Your miles are larger and more meaningful. Congrats and may the good Lord always keep you safe in your journeys.
God bless you and yours and God Bless America!
Rah, I do not understand why we would not be able to make DEF in adequate quantities. People are talking about a shortage of this additive, needed for all trucks made, I think, starting in 2010.
Here is a good article on DEF:
https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/def-diesel-engine-exhaust-fluid-urea-scr-egr/
It seems like a simple enough solution to analyze and make, why would there be (yet another artificial) shortage?
I have no idea why the possible shortage. Hasn’t effected us at all as yet.
I went 48 state OTR when I retired from USMC in 99. Bought my tractor from the company after 6 months…paid cash with proceeds from a rental property. After a couple of years, DW got her CDL and we teamed. Went totally independent, bought a refer trailer, and ran produce coast-to-coast for a few years. Last 2 yrs, I had a steady round trip gig from Topeka to Chicago…only worked 2.5 days/wk and still made enough money. I packed it in in 07 when my tractor was getting to the point where I either needed another one, or a complete overhaul at 1.2 million miles. Sold everything for a really good price (had to pay capital gains cuz it had been depreciated to zero over the years). I had a little over a million miles on my CDL, and had scratched that itch. I lucked into a job as a deputy sheriff in DW’s home town, went to 15 wks of LE boot camp at age 55, and later became Sheriff. It’s been a fun ride, and I sho’ nuff enjoy retirement nowadays! Keep the shiny side up!
Good morning everyone. Happy Memorial Day, America. Remember THEM!
Dear Lord, please continue to keep our fallen heroes in your ever loving and warm embrace. Amen
God bless you and yours, one and all. Hope your day is one of immense gratitude. God Bless America!!!

Arkansas born. Did not know that. Salt of the earth people down there. Many visits to Little Rock. Seriously some of the nicest people one could ever hope to meet in life.
Standing in line at the grocery store a couple days ago I saw a pamphlet about the size of the old Readers Digest but much thinner in the inevitable racks of magazines one finds there. It is titled The John Wayne Code and I picked it up and bought it after leafing through it.
It has six sections titled:
Loyalty
Self-Reliance
Grit
Patriotism
Honesty
Generosity
Maureen O’Hara wrote:
He is cursed with one failing, his loyalty to friends. And it has cost him many sad moments and many happy moments. But he will never cease to be loyal.
Have you ever wondered why Wayne made The Quiet Man? A Love story that was rather out of character for him at a time when every western he was making was doing great at the box office?
Well Director John Ford had wanted to make a movie in Ireland. Wayne promised him it would happen someday. A decade later Ford took a script for the story to the producers and they refused to finance it, believing it to be a loser.
Wayne and O’Hara made a deal with Republic pictures to make The Quiet Man. If they made the picture Wayne, O’Hara, and Ford would make a Western for them as well. That western was Rio Grande!
On the subject of Loyalty Wayne said:
I have tried to live my life so that my family and my friends respect me. The others can do whatever the hell they please.
HUGE Duke fan here. Good stuff, thanks for sharing. He was himself in every movie, precisely himself. That’s what made him special to me.
Staying in Redondo Beach many times I was intrigued by a small diner named “Eat At Joe’s” on PCH. But it was the “Home of the John Wayne” signage that caught my attention and made me go in.
Once in I inquired about the John Wayne aspect. The story I was told was that Duke wandered in one morning, the place was empty and he told the owner (Joe) what he wanted for breakfast. That order or substantially similar remains on the menu to this day.
Also interesting are the locals. I would occasionally introduce some of my west coast employees to it (ie., meet them there). On more than one occasion people near us would offer to share a sample of their food with us. Bizarre? Yeah. Anywhere else. For some reason it was acceptable and not uncommon there.
In fact, on one of the trips where my wife accompanied me, we stayed nearby and I made her eat there with me. Good thing I warned her in advance of the sample sharing because it happened to her too.
Side note to that trip with my wife. As we checked in at our hotel there was chatter among employees about the wedding being hosted at the hotel that evening and we heard the word Kobe mentioned. Sure enough, early evening the lil lady and I were about to go for a stroll along the waterfront. But first she wandered into the gift shop as I stood in the lobby watching the wedding guests arriving.
Out of the ballroom came Kobe Bryant and his wife, dressed to the nines. When my wife came out I told her who it was. She had NO IDEA (does not follow sports one bit) so I explained. She then asked me to point them out specifically.
With arm extended and finger pointed, Kobe looked over, grabbed his wife by the arm and escorted her quickly back into the ball room. Guess he thought I was an ominous looking lunatic. Always made me laugh to think I scared him off.
OK, I’m way off track now.
Thanks for the background story, rah. I still have a small collection of Duke trivia including a photo taken on set for Hondo. It is he and his son. My BIL (a photographer) met the son, told him what a fan I was and he handed it over to be given to me. Good stuff. The Duke was PURE AMERICAN!
I forwarded this video to my wife who happens to be a marvelous cook, and asked her to watch and take notes….. 😁😜
LOL…….that’s great, GB. Hope there is enough there to make sense of the dish. This place should have been featured on Diners & Dives.
Yes! But there are so many local gems of restaurants around the nation that one show can probably not hit them all in twenty years. I have watched both DD&D and Cheap Eats and they’re always fun.
Levi, I can tell you exactly where I was when the news of his death came on the small television playing below me in the kitchen of my mother in law’s home.
I’m not prone to remembering “where I was” moments, but this I do remember. I wept copious tears. Because even then I recognized what we had lost…in him as well as what America was. I hope that doesn’t sound silly. But from that moment, it seems, our fall speeded up to the point where we are now. He was iconic… 🙏
Not silly at all. In fact, a tremendous memory and testimonial to how he touched you. Yes he was iconic. Genuine and iconic.
Many years ago, early in our marriage, my wife, knowing my affinity for the Duke, bought me a caricature statue of him (large head, donning a cowboy hat atop a smaller body). I promptly placed it on my BR dresser and each night at bedtime I would salute it and say “Goodnight Duke” in my best John Wayne impersonation.
That’s a story that has made the rounds for years, especially as we would tell the story from our point POV. She is SUCH A GREAT SPORT. Live Love Laugh, you know.
The story of him making the Green Berets about the Vietnam war spoke to exactly who he was. A Conservative American.
Loved the opportunity to visit Grauman’s and place my fist in his imprint. They don’t make them like him anymore. We were all fortunate in so many ways to grow up in the era that we did.
OK. A moment of pure honesty on the good sport thing.
I hurt my back the other day and have been taking Flexeril. I came in from a walk today, sat down in my chair and clicked on The Florida Suite to listen to it in its entirety. Somewhere along the way I nodded off.
When I awoke she asked me if I wanted to see the video she recorded. It was of me, sitting upright in my chair, laptop in lap and The Florida Suite playing.
She said “I didn’t know what the hell was going on, I thought maybe you were dead and playing funeral music”
Laughter is good for the soul.
Not sure at what point I fell asleep but I know what I had heard to that point was quite soothing. I promise I will get through the balance of it, perhaps after my back is better. Cheers!
Mornin’ comrade infidels.
Eleanor Roosevelt’s Wartime Prayer
Dear Lord,
Lest I continue
My complacent way,
Help me to remember somewhere,
Somehow out there
A man died for me today.
As long as there be war,
I then must
Ask and answer
Am I worth dying for?
This is a question I ask often when I think of not only those who did die in war but also when I think of our Lord Christ Jesus. 🙏
Eleanor had a big heart and did some great things during the war, but sometimes got involved in things she had no business getting into and did not know a thing about and caused problems in doing so.
Agree on all points.
Say it Loud
Say it PROUD
If you would like to virtually visit any of the cemeteries or memorials that hold and honor our war dead, this is a great place to do so.
Cemeteries & Memorials | American Battle Monuments Commission (abmc.gov)
ABMC administers, operates and maintains 26 permanent American military cemeteries and 32 federal memorials, monuments and markers, which are located in 17 foreign countries, the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the British Dependency of Gibraltar; four of the memorials are located within the United States. These cemeteries and memorials, most of which commemorate the service and sacrifice of Americans who served in World War I and World War II, are among the most beautiful and meticulously maintained shrines in the world. Visit ABMC Burial and Memorialization Statistics to learn about the number of men and women we honor around the world.
I have been over a great deal of western Europe and seen some of these places. There are no words. But during my travels I have also seen many other war dead graves elsewhere in small plots of civilian cemeteries, including in Germany. Many are the last resting places of American and British Air crew that had been shot down and their bodies interred by their enemies or by those of the occupied territories in the nearest burial ground to where their bodies were found. They have been left where they were originally buried but with military markers placed marking their graves after the war was over.
. . . but deliver us from the Evil One.
Christ is risen!
Truly He is risen!
Paschal Troparion
Christ is risen from the dead, by death hath He trampled down death, and on those in the graves hath He bestowed life. (sung thrice)
The Jesus Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me, a sinner.
Prayer of Saint Ioannikios the Great of Bithynia (+ 846)
My hope is the Father, my refuge the Son, my protection the Holy Spirit. O Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.
The 50th Psalm (Septuagint)
From Small Compline
Rejoice Virgin Theotokos, Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, for thou hast borne the Savior of our souls. (Thrice)
Earlier this year both my parents were buried at Arlington National Cemetery. If you have never attended a funeral service at Arlington, it is a deeply moving mix of military formality and religion – from the Caisson with the casket, to the caparison horse, the band, the Chaplain’s service in the Chapel and at the burial site, the gun salute, taps and the flag presented to me as the eldest child. The staff and volunteers at Arlington, both military and non-military are conscientious and kind. Having lived in the D.C. area for nearly 60 years and a career with the federal government, that is no longer the case with most of the federal government. My father was in the Army (artillery) for 40 years of active and Reserve duty through three wars – WWII and Korea on active duty, and during Vietnam in Reserve and teaching artillery. My mother worked as a bookkeeper and during WWII my mother worked as a civilian for the military. Both my parents were Patriots in the fullest sense of the word and worked for the good of this country as well as living their lives with honor, dignity and responsibility. Having lived and served in other countries they knew first-hand how privileged we are to live in the U.S. and what a wonderfully unique country our ancestors created and built. They would both be sickened by what is happening within our wonderful nation during the past two years.
As this Memorial Day draws to a close, and despite all of the troubles that we face as a nation on this day in this year, here is a reminder of a simpler, more peaceful time in our “recent” history. That is, if you can go along with my calling 1962 “recent”. It certainly is for some of us….
A young group from New Jersey, The Duprees, made their first big nationwide hit in 1962 covering a great Jo Stafford tune from 10 years earlier. Here they are performing that hit, just a “few” years later…
Take ahold of your sweetheart and take her (or him) around the floor for a slow dance….
Amen
Amen..
Amen
Amen!
Amen.
Amen.
