According to officials and media reporting from Texas. Fourteen eighteen nineteen children and a teacher two teachers have been killed at a Texas elementary school by an 18-year-old gunman who was then shot dead by police. The shooting happened in Ulvade, Texas.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott held a press conference naming 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, a student at Uvalde High School, as the gunman who shot and killed 14 Robb elementary school students and one teacher on Tuesday afternoon. WATCH:
The gunman was a resident of the community and entered the school with a handgun, and possibly a rifle, and opened fire, Abbott said. He said the shooter was likely killed by responding officers but that the events were still being investigated.
This is not related to any of the recent shootings, but just a reminder why schools should be taking security issues seriously (like federal buildings, airports, etc)…

That said, my son committed suicide. As a child we had him in counseling for years, but once he reached 17, our parental authority was stripped from us. That is a travesty. No child should be allowed to refuse medical attention based on suddenly hitting a magical age.
He was most likely schizophrenic but because he could, and did, refuse help, his life was cut short. We will live with the guilt for the rest of our lives.

DNBStores.com (Nigerian news) reports that Romas yelled at his grandmother shortly before he shot her that he was angry about not having graduated high school with his friends. High school graduation is scheduled for May 27, according to the school district’s calendar (ucisd.net).
Someone reported that one of the weapons could have cost thousands of dollars and where did he get the money. Furthermore, who sells a sophisticated semiautomatic rifle to a kid that looks like he’s crazy. No arms dealer in their right mind would have done it. I want to know where he got it from and if someone else was involved in buying it and showing him how to use it.

Does Texas not require that schools have locked doors? Ours does, you step into an entry way, state your business and who you are and you are buzzed in. No one comes and goes freely.

Texan here. My wife works in an elementary school. It’s completely locked during the day and there are three armed guards on duty.
But this shooter shot out the glass of a door or window and entered that way, I am reading.
I believe that schools aren’t required to have bullet proof glass and all/most have windows and glass entries and doors. My wife’s school has an entire entry foyer made of glass.
Plus, it’s not THAT hard to gain entry as a visitor if one plans enough. And the kids are outside a lot. Plus, there is car pool drop off and pick up times, where there is ample opportunity to wreak havoc if someone wanted to.
We can certainly do a better job at hardening our schools, but a determined lunatic can always find a way…

The police confronted this kid in front of the school, according to one article I read, after he crashed his car there. For whatever reason, although they were apparently aware of his attack on his grandmother, they were woefully inadequate to the task of stopping one armed eighteen year old. Should give the locals tons of confidence in their police force.

Many School Districts (not all) do not have the mindset or DNA to protect the kids. A professional armed security person is like kryptonite to a District Head. Educators cannot wrap their heads around that. Also paying a security person what a senior teacher with a MA or PhD makes is like pulling teeth. Some districts are more concerned over parents’ comments at Board Meetings than security for the kids.

This could have been avoided if teachers and other school staff were allowed to carry in school. It’s really easy to get a high body count in a gun free zone.
Someone pointed out that law enforcement on the scene is accountable for every round they send downrange.
So, in situations like these, how does LE accountability minimize casualties? A single entity (LE) has the authority to carry weapons. Thus, it is the only entity available to minimize casualties under penalty of errant casualties.
That leaves a wanton shooter comparatively unencumbered and surrounded by countless targets.
The long term fix to that situation is not the status quo. It is instead a realization that at any point and time anywhere, someone can break loose and wreak havoc. The havoc, however, will likely be commensurate with the degree of SAFE ZONE in effect. Only way to minimize casualties is to allow any free person to arm himself anywhere. The more, the better, as it has a deterrence effect but also acts as the FIX when it all goes sideways fast.
Someone or somebodies should of had a weapon to put an end to that freak! There should be no wait time before someone shows up to end it, a shot fired with immediate shots fired back.
