Consider this sketchy right now. Politico is reporting they have “obtained” a draft copy of the Supreme Court majority opinion which would reverse Roe -v- Wade federal abortion law and return the decisions on abortion law to the individual states. {Uploaded Draft pdf Here}
While it is 98-pages, it is only a draft opinion. The decision of the individual judges could change at any time based on their view of the severity of the outcome, wording and other inputs that would be provided. A draft opinion from internal deliberations has never, ever, been leaked before from inside the supreme court; and that alone should send warning flags to everyone.
Personally, I doubt any draft from February would be pertinent today. This entire scenario just sounds massively sketchy.
“POLITICO received a copy of the draft opinion from a person familiar with the court’s proceedings in the Mississippi case along with other details supporting the authenticity of the document. The draft opinion runs 98 pages, including a 31-page appendix of historical state abortion laws. The document is replete with citations to previous court decisions, books and other authorities, and includes 118 footnotes. The appearances and timing of this draft are consistent with court practice.”
According to the draft, written by Justice Alito after the February oral arguments in the Dobbs -vs- Jackson’s Women’s Health case, five justices are aligned to overturn the 1973 ruling (Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett); three justices are in dissent (Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan); and Chief Justice John Robert’s position is undetermined.
[…] The document, labeled as a first draft of the majority opinion, includes a notation that it was circulated among the justices on Feb. 10. If the Alito draft is adopted, it would rule in favor of Mississippi in the closely watched case over that state’s attempt to ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Again, this leak is very sketchy.
Abortion on demand is the holy grail of social policy for the most extreme radical and violent leftists. If this is a real leak from a staffer inside the Supreme Court, the explosive intent would be to railroad the final decision before it becomes public, and/or create some form of government intervention in congress.

You notice no one ever talks about the Safe Haven laws that were adopted in every state before 2000. These laws made it legal for a new mother to leave her newborn at a hospital, police dept or fire station and keep her privacy and have no penalties. They did this because every newborn is automatically an American citizen and a resident of the state he/she is born in. The babies would be put in foster care and put up for adoption. So….no need for a late term abortion.

How extreme could the House bill be without losing the support of Collins and Murkowski in the Senate? We should all keep in mind that polling has repeatedly shown that the electorate supports abortion rights in the abstract, but would overwhelmingly oppose what the far Left is going to demand.

Hillary and the Democrats are just trying to stir up trouble. If SCOTUS overturns abortion, it goes back to the states and their legislatures can pass laws making abortion legal in that state.
Here is Illinois, it will have no impact if SCOTUS overturns abortion because the Illinois legislature already passed a law that will keep abortion legal in Illinois. I am pretty sure some other states did the same thing when they were worried that abortion would be overturned during the Trump administration.

I listened to part of this. It is various state members of the Family Policy Alliance talking about what happens next, if Roe v Wade were overturned. They all caution to wait for the court decision. However, the discussion basically confirmed that a reversal would indicate the beginning of the pro life fight, not the end.
It was interesting to get various state activity info also.
Calif under Gavin Newsom, for example, wants to become the “free, no charge” abortionists for the entire world (not just their state).
Virginia has a divided government so issue will be difficult. State house Dems are pro abortion, but their new Governor is strongly pro life (even marched with the pro lifers at an event recently).

However each justice votes, none of them should vote based upon the “severity of the outcome”. Outcome based interpretation of the Constitution is how we got here in the first place and is repugnant to strict constructionists. Kicking it back to the States is not much better, smacking of dividing the baby and sounds like a Robert’s contrivance. It is either legal for all or illegal for all. A better compromise, if a compromise must be made, is to disallow abortion on demand and confine it to the first trimester. Still morally repugnant in my opinion.

The original intent of the abortion law was for abortion to be allowed during the first trimester. Anything beyond that should be ‘aborted’.
This seems sketchy to me too. Didn’t Kavanaugh assure Susan Collins that he would uphold Roe v. Wade? Alito and Thomas would vote to overturn Roe. Gorsuch and Barrett would vote to overturn it as long as they were in the minority-that way that can preserve their conservative cred for the time being. Roberts wouldn’t vote to overturn it. Let’s see what the court actually does. I can’t imagine McConnell would approve of any justices who would overturn Roe. Alito and Thomas slipped through the cracks, and vetting has gotten more intense since they were appointed.

During the past two years there have been roughly 1 million covid deaths but 1.6 million abortions each year. Consider the monumental effort to save the lives of elderly people with perhaps only a year or two to live but zero effort on the part of the federal government to save the lives of healthy babies with the prospect of living for seventy years. The government would find it abhorrent to cull this number of an animal species but seems quite happy to dispose of “unwanted” babies as if they were garbage. If the government was consistent they would cull all the elderly who are mostly unwanted people that are a huge financial burden to the state.
Are you forgetting how many elderly persons were shipped off to nursing homes and kept as prisoners to die without their loved ones? How many died ALONE??? Covid has been a genocide for the elderly. Covid was a monumental effort to kill off as many elders as they could. That was just the beginning, then came the death shot boosters!!

Barb, thanks for pointing out something I should have made clear. The monumental effort to save the lives of the elderly was a huge, wasteful effort that purported to be to save the elderly. Had the government adopted a policy of “focused protection” and followed the treatment protocols adopted before the vaccinations were rolled out, I believe far fewer elderly people would have died. We need an independent investigation of where the money went and this will expose this as perhaps the greatest fraud in modern times. No detailed cost benefit study has been done and published.

So in everything I read so far last night and this morning this piece is the only one that specifies that the “overturn” would affirm abortion bans at 15 weeks. This isn’t an “overturn” of Roe if true but rather a modification of the original decision to put the reasoning in line with what we know now: that an infant has a heartbeat and feels pain at a certain point and abortion at that time and beyond is not constitutionally acceptable. The majority of Americans believe in this position I understand from polls and such that I have seen. As usual the left gaslights to churn division, hate and acrimony to achieve power. Full stop. Full disclosure I have not read the opinion myself but since the underlying case involves a state’s right to ban abortions after 15 weeks I feel fairly confident that the drama about “overturning” Roe is overstated. If abortions are still constitutional prior to 15 weeks than it seems clear to me that the underpinning privacy penumbra of Roe remains viable in that a woman has the unilateral right to terminate a pregnancy in those first 15 weeks.
Interesting given that the baby has fingerprints at 6 weeks gestation. You can print it and identify it. It is a person at all stages.
What must change in this country is the evil hearts of the people who do this. Men, women, medical hacks. They all need to have a change of heart.

If this story is true, the Court should issue its opinion right away. Otherwise the disgraceful leak wins. I would say that if my side lost. If we lose the integrity of the Court’s process, we lose the Court. That should be intolerable to all of us who live the country.
