Ontario Premier Doug Ford has gone to court to freeze all of the GiveSendGo crowdfunding donations raised for the Freedom Convoy truckers. The current GiveSendGo fundraiser sits at $8.4 million US.
There is a lot of legal complexity here, and it is not clear the Ontario court has any jurisdiction let alone a feasible way to determine or enforce how and where the funds are distributed. However, in the bigger picture the government is trying to block the funding of the Freedom Convoy.
Premier Doug Ford is the leader of the “progressive conservative party,” the Canadian version of the DeceptiCons.
Apparently, the premier coordinated with Ontario Attorney General to file a restraint order under 490.8 of the Criminal Code, identifying the funds as “offense related property.”
CANADA – The Superior Court of Justice has granted a request from the Ontario government to freeze access to millions of dollars donated through online fundraising platform GiveSendGo to the truckers convoy protesting COVID-19 restrictions in Ottawa and at several border crossings.
A statement from Premier Doug Ford’s office on Thursday said Attorney General Doug Downey brought the application for the order, under 490.8 of the Criminal Code, to prohibit anyone from distributing donations made through the website’s “Freedom Convoy 2022” and “Adopt-a-Trucker” campaign pages.
Ivana Yelich, spokesperson for the premier, said the order “binds any and all parties with possession or control over these donations.” (read more)
The masks are dropping at an alarming rate. Ford casted himself previously as the advocate for the blue-collar workers like truck drivers. However, when the rubber literally hits the road, the elitism comes directly to the surface.
It’s doubtful this will have any impact on the Ottawa Freedom Protest, but it highlights the disconnect between the Canadian governing elite and the Main Street working class Canadians. This move is pathetic and will hopefully backfire.

Thousands of small claim judgements rendered against GOFUNDME is quite possible. Easy to do and if they don’t contest you walk away with a judgement which would likely bolster ant class action civil lawsuit and AG investigation.
If you used a credit card there is a transaction fee of 2%-3% the seller is usually charged by the card processor. Sometimes the vendor (e.g. GFMe) will add a transaction fee or service fee to cover this. Since I don’t/didn’t contribute to GFMe, I don’t know if they did this or this Foreign Transaction Fee covers these costs. Would be interesting to see if Visa, Amex, etc., are waiving these fees for GFMe – I would expect not. Hopefully, they aren’t and GFMe is on the hook for those fees. Retaining that Transaction Fee may be to cover these costs. I would still file a claim with the CC company (e.g., chargeback) as that is sand in the gears. These CC companies are sometimes woke and making them use resources to process these claims hits them on costs.
Dog Ford is a total moron for trying to block the funds. The border crossing get The the Ambassador Bridge can be blocked at both the US and Canadian side and the truckers can hold out longer than Ford can at the Ambassador Bridge.
Doug Ford has apparently never studied military tactics as you try to pick a location which favours you. In Ford’s case his battlefield is the Ambassador Bridge. As a Canadian I grew up in that area and crossed that bridge many times. It is old and the entrances at both Windsor and Detroit are cramped and can be easily blog ked with very few trucks. Every where I read or watch, people are simply handing the truckers cash, buying their gas, or food, whatever they need. So how is Mr. Fancy Pants Politician going to stop that?
Some truckers are saying they have no interest, or even have a clue how to get any of the fund raised monies, some say they are used to paying their own way, or that they are making it through due to the kindness of supporters. It is clear a few of them are in a hard way, and could use the support, but their pride won’t allow for it.
It is going to be very interesting to see how the funds raised will be utilized. I know what the organizers said they will do w/it, at one point it was going to be about the truckers saving travel expense receipts and getting reimbursed, but that was when it was going to be maybe a thousand trucks if they were lucky.
How many truckers that actually need it, will get it, and how will they decide the amount they get? Some of these guys are talking about their mortgages being belly up. It isn’t like they can just divvy it up equally amongst the truckers, they don’t even know who the truckers are. I do not envy those that have the task of dealing w/the money.
I was thinking the other night it would be nice to know the exact number of truckers involved. Numbers keep getting thrown around, but bottom line is no one knows, nor will they ever know. It also interesting to me how they are all on their own, but yet all are just going w/the flow as being one. And to think each and every person there has their own story to tell about their adventure in the name of Freedom. It is GLORIOUS.
Do some math, the amounts involved are daunting. 1,000 trucks idling in Ottawa (just picking that as a number) if they use 1 gallon/hour at $5.00/gallon = $120,000/day just to keep them idling. Plus logistics support, food tents and food, porta-potties, etc. There are frequent claims that there are 50,000 truckers there, most in private vehicles. If even a few thousand trucks in that 45 mile long convoy are idling there that’s a lot of fuel to pay for.
We could tweak the assumptions this way and that, but the numbers are still huge.
It is glorious, indeed.
My gut tells me that anyone taking part in this can be trusted as to what he needs and to get any excess to others.

Right it will take illegal action in the US government to make such things happen. But trends are that illegal actions by US government goes unpunished even if it becomes known.

It would be a great to have a crypto which is redeemable for fuel, as in pay at the pump. Same for electricity, perhaps a different crypto; pay your electric bill. Being tied to hard energy assets would make it universal in scope and tied to the physical economy, as opposed to speculation.
Consequently it would track with energy cost.
And you could use it to buy fuel for protests.
The deeper insight is that speculation holds the dollar hostage because there is no citizen-decided method to isolate physical economic trades from speculative ones when using dollars. It’s all rolled into one.
Cryptos provide a possible path to actually do this. Sure it would be a major fight, because it would represent a way out from under the thumb of the gilded ones. But this is the way to be thinking to spot possibilities, for the time things go to hell and everyone is looking for innovative ways to do business without using a broken dollar.

The protesters come from all over Canada not just Ontario. The most any provincial government could get of the funds would be possible fine payments.

Actually, something like what you describe is coming.
Yes! This attempted freeze of the funds is one of the best things to happen with this protest. While it does spark some unnecessary commotion, it helps to expose people like Ford, bringing them front and center under a spotlight for all the honest people to see. He, like Trudeau, have used this protest to help put and end to their time in public office.
What’s the over/under for donations tomorrow? I bet this toothless move will add $2 million to the account tomorrow.

Cops can seize assets but they cannot necessarily keep them. If you’re driving drunk they can impound your car, but one day thereafter they have to return it to you. “Eminent Domain” is an altogether different legal proposition, and you are supposed to receive “compensation” although they decide what that “compensation” will be.
Here, there is no crime. Protesting in a loud and effective way is not a crime: it is supposed to be a legally protected right. And yes, you have the right to be as annoying as you wish to be. HONK HONK!!
Once the funds are seized, they are often not returned. Our civil forfeiture laws are unconstitutional.

There was a press conference early on where they indicated the money goes directly to the fuel suppliers first. The fuel is paid for first and they don’t even touch that, it’s sent directly to the vendors. That’s how I understood it.
Sure. Because there is no “criminal enterprise” here. Only peaceful Canadians – thousands of them – petitioning their government for the redress of grievances in their trucks. This judge made a purely political decision but with no legal leg to stand on.

She blames the “go send go” foursome for reporting her to Twitter and getting her re-banned from Twitter after sending them a list of legitimate questions.
She says the new group tied to go send go is or may be trying to usurp the leadership of the Trucker movement away from the original leadership group which includes the doctors, and a few familiar names, etc and who held the on-location live-streamed meetings we all saw earlier.
So while everyone is focused on the court order to stop the money, few realize there may be a Trojan horse tied to that money because the 4 people tied to it have tried to assert leadership over the original group perhaps. I haven’t reviewed the entire video yet, don’t jump to conclusions, but keep an eye.
So Americans will have their convoy. They’ll have to fundraise, communicate, and coordinate differently having learned from the Canadian Freedom Convoy. We get better and sharper with time and as our oppressors reveal their weakness and desperate strategies.
