The Canadian government has fired Carrie Bourassa (pictured left), the scientific director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health, after she was discovered faking her native indigenous status throughout her career.
In her defense, Ms. Bourassa said she identified as indigenous, and that should count or something.

But wait a minute. If you can identify as “gender fluid” or if you are a genetic male or female and choose to identify as an opposite gender you can do so. That being the case you should also, logically, be able to identify as indigenous, or as black, or as white. Why does O’Bama, for instance, have to identify as black when he’s half white? There’s an inherent unfairness in all of this.
Ms. Bourassa has a good supporting argument to make. In terms of population genetics there’s a good chance that a DNA analysis will show that she has indigenous DNA in her genes. Deciding how much you need to be “real” is a slippery slope because you run head-on into gender-fluidity. If that can be held to be legitimate in Canada why can someone who always felt that they were indigenous be a tribal member? Put another way: if “gender-fluid” people aren’t being fired then why should she?
It tells you everything you would ever need to know about the insane times we are living in, when half of the country would nod and say ‘exactly — excellent point Garrison’….

In all honesty, this is Jerry Zucker’s problem. He bought HBC and this issue is “downstream baggage” with HBC contractors from a couple of hundred years ago. His personnel people should be working to resolve this.
