The governors office says “suspending the reading, writing and math proficiency requirements … will benefit “Oregon’s Black, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color.”
In essence, the students of color are not smart enough to learn reading, writing or math – so they shouldn’t be expected to read, write or understand mathematics.
Kate Brown looks, sounds and acts like a typical left-wing moonbat. It’s hard to imagine a state governor saying the minority students in the state are not smart enough to pass proficiency standards; thereby signaling her extreme racist perspectives- and gaining cheers from her leftist tribe; yet here we are.

If children are not going to learn to read, write and do math in school, what is the point of sending them? It just seems that if you cannot read and cannot write you cannot learn in our world. Learning by rote and then memorization is very good, but what are the students going to learn by rote and memorization?
I have read that Chinese children learn to write and read in Chinese by rote, since you can’t sound it out. They practice writing characters in the air as well as on paper.
It is going to be up to parents to make sure their children can read and write, memorise the times tables and at least have the basic tools for functioning in our society without being total victims of those who CAN read, write and do math.
That should be obvious – to INDOCTRINATE them!

This is only new for Oregon. Discussing this morning one of my employees said that when he graduated in LA county in 2001, there was no proficiency in anything. Everybody graduated and the only thing that counted was credits.

The problem being the parents of many disadvantaged children have historically been unable to effectively read and write themselves..

The only “help” this policy will give is to help these people stay on the gubmint teat forever. They will be poor and uneducated with no potential to have a fulfilling life unless they have some self-awareness and get educated on their own. When active in industry, I saw WAY too many poorly schooled high school graduates who were then in college and wanting internships. These AA grads couldn’t think, count, read, you name it and they either couldn’t do it at all or were at a grade school level in their abilities. The swathes of illiterate, and undeserving AA Tertiary edu admissions will climb higher. Institutions will have to apply even higher doses of cognitive dissonance/Mamet principle, to pretend that everyone graduating did so on merit. What a farce.
I see even more Asian students suing universities, for discrimination.
Asian parents will (hopefully) start sending their children to Japan and/or China for their post-secondary education. Along with the dollars that formerly were deposited in American universities’ bank accounts. Thirty years ago, that flow went from the Orient to the USA. Now it’ll soon reverse.
I would hesitate to say it has anything to do with “smart enough”. It’s more a cultural and rearing thing. Actually getting educated in school is “acting white” so some minorities don’t do it. It’s not that they’re not smart enough, it’s that they don’t care to.
The interesting thing is that, as usual for every leftist policy, it will accomplish the exact opposite of what it’s proponents claim.
They claim it will help minorities succeed because they’ll have diplomas and can get better jobs.
But what it will actually do is convince employers that the diploma doesn’t mean anything. That having a diploma doesn’t guarantee that minority applicants are literate or can do basic math. The end result is that actual literate minorities who have a legitimate chance of success will have their opportunities shut down because of the actions of this governor and the inability of employers to determine which minority applicants are worth hiring.

Most online job applications now have various proficiency tests for just this reason. Good luck getting an interview if you can’t read or do basic logic.

This was effectively done in Florida in the 1990s – an incredulous lowering of standards for a high school diploma. It was so bad that state universities and local businesses publicly announced that the public school system was a failure. The colleges and universities reported that over 60 % of first year students from Florida high schools required special courses in English and math before they could start their college education. Special tests in elementary and high schools were put place to correct the deficiency, but, of course, ultimately they were criticized as “racist”.

Every (decent) job requires those basic skills to be successful and to have an opportunity for upward mobility. These students likely won’t be able to pass a college entrance exam. Shame on OR! Those children deserve better!

Help POC’s? Yes it will! It’s going to help them to a life of poverty and exclusion. What entrepreneur is going to hire people who are unable to read and understand directions, or write a proposal? What business is going to hire people unable to converse intelligently with customers? Who in their right mind will hire those who cannot figure out how to make a correct measurement before cutting, or make change, or add up a bill?
This will lead to a life of ‘affirmative action’ artificial advancement, if any at all, as they will not be able to handle basic skills. How much does the state’s tax payers pay per a student to educate them. Well teachers union should be on the hook to refund the tax payers for every student that graduates and can not read write and do math at a 12th grade level. And I’m not talking a refund for the last year but a refund for the entire 12 years. If you pay someone to paint you car and they only paint one bumper and a fender you take them to court and demand your money back. Well it time to do that with educators.
I hope some black families are offended by this. Dr. Ben Carson was raised in the projects and he became a pediatric neuro surgeon. Frederick Douglas was a slave. Its time for the massive amount of money spent on the education system to follow the child.
