In essence, the students of color are not smart enough to learn reading, writing or math – so they shouldn’t be expected to read, write or understand mathematics.

It’s hard to imagine a state governor saying the minority students in the state are not smart enough to pass proficiency standards; thereby signaling her extreme racist perspectives- and gaining cheers from her leftist tribe; yet here we are.

Minority students at elite school have long argued that expecting them to express themselves in acceptable, academic English is racist. Their argument is that, because of thier history of being oppressed, they shouldn’t be held to the standards that other, non-minority, students are expected to meet.
The essential problem with their complaint is that they don’t understand that the ability to communicate is a key to intellectual development. They simply want to receive passing grades without having the intellectual capacity required to understand the subject matter being taught.
Case in point: I was teaching at a major state university. A student, who happened to be black, repeatedly failed my multiple-choice question tests. She complained. Her advisor contacted me and related that she had already been accepted into the Ph.D program of a major university. This was a student who, having spent four years at this school, couldn’t manage to answer a relatively simply theoretical multiple-choice question when the answer was right there before her. I allowed her to drop the course with no penalty. Heaven help us if she’s actually teaching at a university somewhere . . .

Colleges/universities long ago abandoned the education model in favor of the business model…in it, they are not held to account for the quality of their product but rather the quantity…as most know when you ramp up production w/o corresponding QA improvements the product quality takes a massive hit
In a book I just finished reading, universities simply have stopped even holding classes. Tuition is paid by the government, the students don’t care to learn anything, and the time is just spent hanging out in government-provided campus housing.
The diploma is printed out and handed to them when the come in the front door. The only requirement is hanging around (sort of) for four years.
Are we that far away from this scenario? I don’t think so.
I was a professor at California State University, Monterey Bay, the worst educational institution on the planet. A calculus student of mine earned 6 out of 56 points on Exam 1, so I had her review her exam with me so that I could better help her. At one point she needed to subtract 8x -3x, which she could not do. I showed her that if you factor out the x, you really only need to subtract 8-3. “What is 8 minus 3?” I asked. She waved her fingers for a moment and then pronounced her answer: 4.
I asked her where she took precalculus. At CSUMB was her reply.
When the college opened, the 14 founding professors decided that no math classes should be taught, since math is an impediment to the success of women and minorities. That didn’t last because the psychology professor decided that he couldn’t teach psychology unless his students had already taken statistics, and he couldn’t teach both in one class.
This stupidity has been around, spreading like a cancer, for decades.
Making good grades is now racist. If you are smart, have good study skills, and a drive to attain excellence, you are using your privilege unfairly. Being successful in class is now called “opportunity hoarding”.

High school seniors are required to pass an exit test called the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA).
If you do not pass the HSPA, you take a different test called the Alternative High School Assessment (ASHA).
It’s less rigorous and consists of just one problem per subject. If students fail the Algebra portion of the HSPA, they’re given a single Algebra question on the AHSA.
If they fail that test, the state allows students to appeal the graduation requirements by submitting samples of their classwork.
Valid samples include a single algebra problem, or a persuasive essay with a teacher’s comments in the margins.
That’s how they earn their diploma.

Daughter, not so well…math is challenging and we have had issues with her staying at things. She is truly lost and it is hard for us to pull her out and homeschool. She is 13.
I now WFH so this past year and now the summer after has been really tough on us.
Not knowing what is going on with mandatory masking sucks and it is a HUGE await list for the alternative schools in Idaho. It may be time for homeschool for her.

But unless there was (or is) a teacher in your daughter’s school that can actually teach math with any proficiency, which is by no means a given, and that hypothetical teacher can spend time with her, she will remain lost and never learn it, yet she will be passed along without having attained the knowledge and will (unfortunately) have issues later in life, having not grasped the necessary math skills.
You’ll find great resources for home education, and certainly your area will have willing tutors or others that can help your daughter master the subject if needed, but counting on public education is a fool’s errand anymore in most, but not all, locations. Our children are too precious to expose them to such this treachery – I pray you’ll make the right decision concerning your family.

In some cases, states get as little as 10% of their school financing from the feds. Returning taxpayers’ money to parents in the form of vouchers to be used for schools of their choice would be the best idea; however the rich, powerful teachers’ unions would likely make that impossible. State funding of schools might be more easily accomplished.

I graduated from college in th 1960s, with a BS degree in physics. My first job was at a Navy research lab in Maryland. My supervisor was a black gentleman who had a BS and MS in chemistry. He was an amazingly smart guy with numerous publications in accredited scientific journals. He absolutely had a first rate education and knew his stuff. He graduated with his degrees before all the affirmative action BS came along. He would have been appalled to hear that blacks were incapable of learning reading, writing, or arithmetic. Or, advanced chemistry. Sadly, the same schools he attended are, today, peddling this same low standards stuff for blacks.
