Yes, you read the headline correctly. Apparently the COVID virus can tell the difference between your grocery store and your local drinking establishment. Effective tomorrow Louisiana Governor Bel-Edwards is shutting down bars until AFTER Christmas.
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Many bars across Louisiana will be forced to close effective tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 25 until after Christmas.
The closures will come as a result of tighter new restrictions announced by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards Tuesday, Nov. 24.
There were 3,266 new COVID-19 cases and 39 additional deaths reported in the state overnight. “It is imperative that we take action and take action now,” Gov. Edwards said.

All bars and other businesses forced to close should at minimum be given a property tax reduction for the prorated amount of the closure.
It is unfair to tax property tax if you are shut down for government benefit. These businesses will be also robbed of unemployment claim money.
They should fight any chargeability re: reemployment assistance. Usually, the employer is only charged if they dismiss an employee for reasons other than misconduct or if the employee leaved for good cause attributable to the employer.
Being shut down by government diktat would not appear to give out-of-work employees “good cause” to quit and it is not a dismissal for a reason other than misconduct. If anything, the state should be the one touched for RA.

Louisiana is reporting 47 outbreaks with 505 cases related to bars. According to the health dept, bars are the type of setting with the highest number of cases after food processing plants. Restaurants show 56 outbreaks with only 241 cases involved.
So about 10 persons per outbreak in bar settings and about 5 persons per outbreak in restaurant settings.
These numbers might be part fantasy, but suggest that people don’t keep as great a distance in bars as they do in restaurants.
(Since only adults are allowed to enter bars, the decision to visit a bar should be up to the adult patrons. Don’t expect to see me inside one.)

By far, the number one priority in fighting this should have been social distancing. We are basically a pretty clean society. The extra hand washing and disinfecting have had minimal impact.
What would have worked back in mid-April would have been to prepare everyone for a 3 week COMPLETE shutdown. No grocery stores, no travel except for medical emergencies, NOTHING.
3 weeks would have allowed those contagious to develop symptoms and be identified and treated. But we botched the shutdown by being too lax, and then letting it go for so long that the economy was nearly destroyed. People will not do that again.
Also, the biggest obstacle to containing this is stupid people. My wife is a substitute school teacher . She told me of a parent who came to school for a parent teacher conference. The parent had found out she was COVID positive the day before. She came to the conference anyway and didn’t tell anyone she was COVID positive. Stupidity like that cannot be fixed by national mandates and draconian edicts.
I am 57 and at a higher risk because of my not so great physical condition. The government isn’t gonna protect me. I will have to protect my self.

Agreed. But can you explain how grocery store clerks can rub their eye and touch a ton of product, and that is fine? But bars in particular are not okay?
I’ll give you another example: Here in WA state, it was perfectly fine all summer to dine inside restaurants, if you only took your mask off when you are seated. So the virus knows when you are vertical? You aren’t contagious when you are seated?
None of us are saying that staying away from other human beings is not effective. What is asinine are the illogical rules.
Frankly, it’s much less likely to be transmitted in a grocery store because people do maintain social distancing. The staff are constantly spraying the handles of the shopping carts after their use and hand wipes are readily available.
The major thing is that a bar is, by its nature, a pretty social place. While yes, some people sit at a bar alone, stare into the mirror and rarely talk, most folks are there not simply to imbibe but also to laugh, to talk, to dance, etc. In other words, the talking alone, close talking too, is something your don’t see in the grocery stores since covid.
ON top of it, just a couple of drinks makes a lot of people even MORE social and that again leads to “close talking.”
I don’t like it, but yeah, there’s a difference between human behavior in a bar/lounge v. a market.

The scenario you go on to describe isn’t about stupidity. It’s about carelessness and selfishness. For example, people come to work when they’re sick, because they want to get paid and not punished. They don’t care about you or me.
One should always assume careless and selfish people are in our midst. Sometimes, even nefarious ones. Wash your hands, and use good sense.
If you’re at risk, and this afraid of a virus with a 99% survival rate, then you need to just isolate yourself at home, order your groceries delivered, and not impose on the rest of us.

I think you should develop your reasoning ability. Covid is a virus, a worldwide virus. All the lockdowns/shutdowns achieve is a DELAY in transmission. As soon as it is relaxed the passing on of the virus continues. Eventually, someone in the world will visit your area.
What needs to be done, and has been to some extent, is to learn how to deal with it. The mortality rate is below 1% at the moment. What is the point of telling people who have tested positive or showing symptoms to go home, isolate themselves and wait to see if they become sick enough to warrant admission to hospital?
There needs to be immediate treatment which has been shown to drastically reduce the need for hospitalisation. This would bring the mortality rate down even further. We’ve never shut down our economy for other flu, why this one?
If you are personally worried, then it is up to you to do what you think is right for you –

Boost your immune system against flu like viruses – vit D, Zinc etc etc.
Oh, and just for information I am in my seventies, lifelong asthmatic, diagnosed with COPD and don’t feel any more threatened than I do with a normal cold/flu which is the reality of this flu.

I agree, but I don’t have a business license to protect. That’s what the local county officials were threatening with (Florida). They currently require all businesses to post a facemask mandate sign whether the business requires masks or not. This keeps the facade/control alive.

A significant number of PCR tests are false positives due to the limits of the test itself and running up cycle threshold (amplification doubling cycles). The tests cannot distinguish between live virus and dead virus particles from an old (asymptomatic) infection and they are mostly useless due to US lab practice of running critical threshold (Ct) values above 30 to even 40. A Ct value of 40 means that whatever was swabbed from the nasal passages has been amplified 2^40, or 1.099 trillion times! That’s trillion with a T! Most people who test positive with PCR aren’t sick and don’t even have any live virus in them that can be shed or cultured. We have a LOT of clients who own hotels. We handle their legal matters from forming corporations and LLCs, acquiring land, drafting loan documents to handling the closings. They are being foreclosed on, one after another, at alarming rates.
In fact, MANY of our commercial clients are now facing foreclosure and loss of business. We’re averaging 2 or 3 a week. It’s so sad. This also means many more unemployed.

It’ll be done when it’s done and lockdowns won’t have a damn thing to do with it. Here in MN, it hit the Twin Cities (moderately) in May and rural MN in the fall.
