When my British husband was attempting to secure his green card twenty years ago so we could relocate to the US, the procedure for securing it took months. I won’t list the onerous agenda we had to follow, each step time consuming, culminating in a final interview at the American Embassy in London.
At the end of it as he was finishing the last required detail, he had to raise his right hand and swear before an immigration official that he would not claim any benefits or be “a burden to the State” for a period of five years.
