During the period 1991-1998, the California National Guard, along with that of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas all had USBP and US Customs Service support programs along the U.S. Mexico Border. The Soldier and Airmen involved served on Counter-Drug, Title 32 Federal Active Duty for extended period, often years. In California they performed engineering, road-building, fence and barrier construction along the actual border to enhance enforcement mobility. They supplemented Port-of-Entry inspections by the Customs Service, provided intelligence analysis at USBP Sector Headquarters, and served in clandestine and overt Observation Posts to surveil and monitor border trafficking routes. The service was dfirectly in support of the same agencies and locations as the new Border Award and their service needs to be retroactively included in the eligibility criteria!
May 20, 1991 a National Guard woman working with CET (US Customs Contraband Enforcement Team) at the port of Oakland was the discovering officer of 1080 lbs of heroin, the largest drug seizure of the drug in US history. (The famous French Connection seizure of 1968 was about 250 lbs).

The HR Group that did the hiring for ICE operated out a Minnesota and eliminated most of the white male and female applicants even recent military veterans in favor of any kind of minority applicants they could find. I don’t know if it’s changed with Sec Noem in charge!

I was crying because I was moved by the medals being given to the border officers. While I am horrified by the murder of the Reiner’s by their own son, I certainly am not crying about them. MAGA!

My Grandpa must have had one of the original medals. He was down there for the Pocho Villa expedition. He never mentioned the medal however.

I’ve lived through some terribly turbulent times in our nation and in the world. Vietnam almost tore this country apart. Watergate was a severe wound. The Manson murders shredded the fabric of our culture. 9/11 was shocking. The COVID pandemic and ensuing political madness were bitter and disgraceful.
I now feel, however, that the disturbing malaise poisoning our current world is in many ways worse than all of these other events. It is literally as if the world has spun off its axis, never to find balance again. I’ve never been more concerned about the future of the human race. And the worst part of all of it, is that it’s predictable, and therefore preventable. Everything that’s wrong is staring us right in the face, and half this country simply will not join us in fighting and fixing it. It’s infuriating and depressing and maddening.
