I think that the most-important thing to say about “the Russian position” is that it is extremely justified. Perhaps their biggest failure over the last decade(s) is that they put too much faith in “diplomacy.” Even as the so-called “defensive” alliance, NATO, crawled inexorably towards contact with their border. (Wouldn’t a true “defensive” alliance obviously want space?)
Having now been told that “Minsk 1&2” was a deception, Russia looked upon an obvious Uk/NATO invading army on their doorstep, and decided to pre-emptively attack first. While publicly declaring to the world what their objectives were, and were not.
Russia is – believe it or not – now leading the drive towards “meaningful negotiations.” But they are no longer going to accept “deceptions.” Nor should they. They now hold the military “upper hand,” and they are going to use it. Perhaps their “special military operation” was what this whole thing would finally require.
Lavrov is a chess grandmaster while Welker is struggling with draughts.

Along with that, consider that Russia seems to regard the presence of NATO in Ukraine as an existential threat, or close to it.
I don’t think it’s reasonable for the US to consider whatever might happen in Ukraine as anything close to a threat to us — certainly not an existential one.
