On Thursday, the designation of eight Latin America-based criminal organizations was published in the U.S. Federal Register, carrying out a Jan. 20 executive order by Trump. The U.S. hopes the designation, something usually reserved for terrorist groups with political rather than economic objectives, will increase pressure on the groups.

what I am describing is exactly what should be in place. And make it permanent and force Mexico to pay for at least half of it. In March 2021, the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) Overseas United Working Committee recognized Wan Kuok Koi, also known as “Broken Tooth,” as a “patriotic businessman” and the “chief representative” of all international Hongmen associations. Hongmen is synonymous with triads, or Chinese transnational organized crime syndicates, to many Chinese.
The awarding entity is a CCP United Front organization and a platform under the China Association for Science and Technology. It also pushes China’s flagship infrastructure program, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), worldwide. According to the Treasury Department notice, Mr. Wan has established a security company protecting BRI investments in Southeast Asia.

The emphasized part of the above quote reminds me of the scene from “The Aviator,” when Howard Hughes, crippling around with a cane from crashing an experimental plane in Beverly Hills, is surprised during a visit to Ava Gardner’s home when the actress confronted him about her discovery of a “bug” in her bedroom. Addled, Hughes promised to “get rid of all the bugs,” claiming he only did it to “protect her.” Gardner continued with her ranting, only to suddenly stop when the meaning of Hughes’ accidental admission suddenly hit her. “What did you mean by ‘all the bugs, Howard?” Hughes’ stammering admission led to Gardner taunting him for Katherine Hepburn’s dumping him. When Hughes pushed her away, Gardner got back up with ashtray in hand and gave Hughes another traumatic brain injury he couldn’t afford.
